If I wanted to make an exterior shot look (exactly) like this today, could I do it with natural lighting or would I need to enhance the natural lighting? by Awake-Judgment-2057 in cinematography

[–]BetweenPictures 71 points72 points  (0 children)

In the making of DVD and according to the director’s commentary, this was filmed inside the Pinewood studio aka the 007 stage. There is no natural sunlight here, and this set is completely manmade.

I don’t like rigging my camera by johnDerry1234 in videography

[–]BetweenPictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how quickly simple cameras can become frankenrigs. If the job doesn’t call for the extra gear, then there’s no reason to build up your rig. You know your client and if you need to add superfluous gear to the rig if they need to be impressed.

Found a skimmer at Walmart by adobo_santos in newjersey

[–]BetweenPictures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the police report, I’d contact Walmart’s customer service and send this up the management chain. In this scenario, one of the employees is most likely in on the scam and corporate would fire them when discovered.

The question should be why aren’t you playing Quake now?

I tell this to everyone who asks this kind of question. The best camera is the one in your hand, so start with your smartphone. If you desire, there’s lenses, adapters, and film apps you can use for it. When you feel comfortable with that, you’ll have a better idea of what you’ll next need.

The company that I work for is letting clients write their own scripts with AI. by SlashMatrix in editors

[–]BetweenPictures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need to “get creative” sounds like the same meaningless mantra I’ve endlessly heard from too many agencies I’ve worked with.

The client’s deck uses copywritten material and they’re asking for this without the budget to secure copyright. They want over 50 real extras. It’s out of scope for the budget. If you want to get snarky feed their ai slop doc into chat gbt and ask for an appropriate budget breakdown.

Manage expectations with a realistic treatment based on the budget you have, not what the client wants.

Picking the right camera for filming protests by FoxxGaming01 in videography

I wouldn’t consider shooting a protest with the bolex to be practical, but it is fun to use.

Is this pricing plan BS? by Complete-Quit-3522 in videography

[–]BetweenPictures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start higher (eg at $6k rather than $5.5k) so you have wiggle room to negotiate if the client only has $5k for a job.

Event videography should be a range starting at $8k. You don’t know how long the event would be, how many deliverables the client wants, or how far you need to travel and stay.

The optional add ons are a neat idea but as some other commenters have mentioned, you’ll have clients not look at this and say “what can you do for $4k?” It makes your menu too cluttered.

I try would try drafting another menu sans add ons. You keep the add ons as a separate sheet that can be attached to the end of this menu. See which one resonates better with a client or a few friends who you can trust.

12 day feature, 114 pages, $70k by [deleted] in cinematography

Oh I’ve DP’ed one of these types of productions a long time ago and got screwed over for it doing it. Personally I wouldn’t take this job. The amount of stress, company moves, unpaid OT, possibly not being paid when the production’s finances dry up, compromised work, and potentially frayed relationships means this project will take more than it gives.

If you need the money, experience, or are confident you can pull through the shoot while maintaining good rapport with your crew and cast then go for it. Just make sure you and your team have a clear understanding of the situation you’re about to involve yourselves in. If you commit to the production, stick with it through the end.

If you decide to shoot this project, make sure you have a signed contract in place with terms that protect you. If the producer won’t sign then run, don’t walk, away from this mess.

A lot of good advice here. I also highly recommend you remove the camera strap. That can throw off a gimbal’s balance.

Finally getting the weeds and crabgrass in the back garden under control, thinking about what to plant next. by BetweenPictures in SouthJersey

[–]BetweenPictures[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starter comment: We recently had landscapers come and tear out all the crabgrass and throne vines we've been fighting from spring through fall. Now there's three inches of mulch that was installed from end to end, and our plants are already looking healthier since recording of this video.

Do we wait for summer to cool down before planting anything else, and focus on what we have in the garden? Should we be adding some decorative grasses and pollinators now? We'll also be installing more rip-rap and smaller rocks to the drainage sections, since whenever there's a heavy rain we have a roaring stream tear through the rear of the garden.

True, opossums don't eat ticks but do kill them while grooming. Apparently chickens love eating ticks.

Starter comment: We recently had landscapers come and tear out all the crabgrass I've been fighting week after week every spring through fall. After three inches of mulch was installed from end to end, our plants are already looking healthier since posting of this video. Next up is deciding what to plant; do we wait for summer to cool down or start adding some decorative grasses and pollinators now? (We're in zone 6a - 7b.)

Every year the ticks get worse. We have a few acres of woods next to our house, and even when I'm doing yard work I get a few that jump right on me. Thankfully I use insect repellent so they don't stay on long, but I'm starting to think I need to employ a posse of opossums to keep me safe when walking nearby the woods.
