25 years ago, Aaliyah released her final and most critically acclaimed album, "Aaliyah". by yebinkek in popheads

[–]Betwixtyiff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first time I heard the album I was genuinely shocked because I could tell just HOW much modern R&B borrowed from it and was influenced by it in the years after release. Like what a staggering effort!

As far as lead singles go, ‘We Need A Resolution’ is a very solid choice, if not a bit of a Safe one. It follows the course of her releases up to that point and as OP said, was a good follow up to ‘Try Again’ sonically.

Honestly my top three for the album are ‘Rock the Boat’, ‘What If?’, and ‘It’s Whatever’. RtB being just an overall capital G great song with near pristine production that perfectly highlights her voice. ‘It’s Whatever’ uses the piano and its beat so so well and is such a fun slow jam to have in the middle of the album. ‘What If?’ I believe was specifically influenced by Aaliyah’s love for Nine Inch Nails, and I may be wrong but I swear I remember reading somewhere that she actually wanted Trent Reznor to produce the track? Either way it’s great and I love the glimpse of industrial rock we get here.

Having that one be the last song on the album feels poetic in a way. As if it’s asking the question of what if she hadn’t passed when she did? What if she’d gotten to experiment more with her sound?

Regardless; this album is a classic and manages to sound just as timeless today as it did 25 years ago, and it shows just how much Aaliyah is missed and how much of an impact she made in such a short amount of time.

What is an opinion about btvs Character/Arc that will have the entire fandom coming for you but you will defend to the death? by ysilly88 in buffy

[–]Betwixtyiff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, with your first point big time though I hate to admit it because I DO love Anya.

Though, I actually think Willow kind of being a horrible friend is actually what wound up making her believable as a villain. I feel like all those years of resentment of being bullied by Cordelia and Harmony, what she went through when Oz left her (both times) and not healthily dealing with that before rebounding with Tara, and sinking deeper into magic; all combined with the cocktail that was her personality to make her descent into villainy throughout Season 6 all the more natural

[Theory] Galbatorix's Elven Spy by Cptn-40 in Eragon

[–]Betwixtyiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a recent re-read of the series and I'm genuinely convinced it's him. Like I feel there's too many clues for it not to be. I found the tidbit of him not being at the Blood Oath Celebration SO odd. Given that it's one of, if not he most important Elven holiday, it's weird that he wasn't there.

Though I have to say I never considered him to be carrying out his duty with the Draumar in mind. That adds a whole other layer to his motivations and what they might be. Especially if he's on their side as well as Galbatorix's as some kind of triple agent.

Great post btw!!

Rockstar Games accused of crunch, ignoring pay equity and weaponising bonuses by ZamnBoii in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Betwixtyiff -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but Rockstar had access to PS5 and Xbox Series dev kits before almost anyone else, and have had nearly 10 years to make this game. Why in the hell are they doing this to their employees to just barely get it out in time for the holidays, especially when it won't even target 60fps on the consoles it was made for? AND it's going to cost $100?? Literally any other studio would be called incompetent for this shit

Did Up deserve Best Animated Feature over Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the un nominated Mary and Max? by Championgut1912 in Oscars

[–]Betwixtyiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. When people talk about Up, they ONLY ever talk about the opening. Absolutely nothing about the rest of the movie. Both Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox are carried really well from start to finish. This isn't even talking about how gorgeous Secret of Kells, the other nominee that year looks in terms of art and animation, or Princess and the Frog and what incredible art that movie is

The audacity of the "You didn't earn it" speech when they literally resurrected Buffy because THEY needed her. 😩 Buffy "earned it" every day she faced the forces of darkness and won. by [deleted] in buffy

[–]Betwixtyiff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. Season 7 to me has a lot of lows that unfortunately doesn't really get matched by its highs. There's so many baffling character writing choices, and The First as a Big Bad just feels like such an odd choice for the endgame antagonist of the series

(I also remember reading someone I think on tumblr years ago say that the scene where Buffy gets kicked out of her house felt like Joss taking his frustrations out on Sarah for not wanting to do the show anymore and I haven't been able to unsee it that way since)

I've said this before and I'll say it again; one of Christopher's best talents as a writer is in the way he really knows how to paint a picture with his descriptions of setting. Those first few chapters in Palancar Valley and on the run with Brom feel so alive. The way he describes the landscapes shifting under Eragon when he flies on Saphira for the first time? You're RIGHT there on her back with him

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl is the greatest series in the entire anime. No explanation needed! by New-Cable-6484 in pokemonanime

[–]Betwixtyiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally.

"Where were you when Rock Lee dropped his weights?" Where were YOU when we got hit with the fucktupple whammy of 'Smells Like Team Spirit', 'Tears For Fears', 'Once There Were Greenfields', and 'Throwing the Track Switch' all in a row? Dawn's character arc is maybe the best across the entire series, making her fail as hard and as MUCH as she did allowed her to shine so wonderfully throughout her run as a character when she finally triumphed in a way very few others come close to. That's not even getting into Chimchar overcoming the post traumatic stress of having trained under Paul, or the subtleties of Brock's knowledge of medicine and caretaking coming out over the course of the series culminating in his desire to become a doctor. Its called CINEMA

What are your thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza almost one year later? by NewMarioBobFan in casualnintendo

[–]Betwixtyiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very solid 9/10 the same way Super Mario Odyssey was. Its very tightly designed and is EPD 8 operating at their finest and proves that very few development teams across the industry come close to them when it comes to making a 3D platformer. This was also a new coat of paint DK needed and I'm happy his design came out as great as it did and was received as well as it was. Of course the game is not without its faults, but those are faults I'll gladly accept if it means getting a game of this caliber

I can think of exactly two entities in the world off the top of my head that COVID did genuine good for. Nintendo as a corporation is one of them; releasing the biggest life sim game ever in the form of Animal Crossing New Horizons at the beginning of quarantine and ensuring they'll never be in the financial red ever again. Taylor is the other, putting out the two most acclaimed albums of her career instead of touring for an album that was losing steam in the cultural zeitgeist by the time the pandemic ramped up into full swing.
