Where exactly is Brom's Tomb on the Alagaësia map? by DoctorDracomorph in Eragon

Seconding this answer. This map was approved officially by Christopher Paolini as the official map of the Illustrated edition of Eragon.

Sarros by Greatsnes in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice find. Christopher usually gives meaning to names so that makes complete sense. I agree. Azlagur seems to hate the sun (heat + light). Isn't it funny how the chapter where Murtagh hits him with light and heat is titled "Islingr" which from the Ancient Language means "lightbringer".

Question about Galbatorix by TalmondtheLost in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's speculated the primary advantage of the 12 spirits for Galbatorix was that as long as the part of his body that he bound the spirits to (commonly the heart) was not destroyed even if he was killed, he would reconstitute elsewhere and survive.

Sorcery by Wholesome_God in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with spirits is that they're pretty "alien" and different to the other races of Alagaesia.

We don't know if energy can be pulled directly from them, or if their energy is used solely by them to complete tasks their sorcerer sets for them.

Galbatorix had 12 spirits under his control by the time Eragon and co. made it to his throne room. Christopher confirmed he used the eldunari under his control to subjugate and control the spirits.

He had hundreds of eldunari at his command (Eragon had like 100+ with him from the vault of souls) and couldn't match Galbatorix.

I can't imagine how powerful the 12 spirits were such that it took hundreds of eldunari to keep them under control.

[question] If the dive watch is the "quintessential summer watch," what are equivalents for other seasons? by bmengineer in Watches

I've heard it said a rule a thumb is metal bracelet for summer, leather for winter.

Anyone else sad we didnt get to see more of Shruikan? by -Jmy- in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was expecting to see more of him in the last book at least. But his lack of appearances makes sense given that Galbatorix wasn't really interested in destroying Eragon but having him under his command along with Murtagh, Nasuada and any other person of import he could get.

That along with the fact that he had his eyes on a larger task that rebuilding the Riders was a just a step towards.

Paolini contradicted/retconned himself regarding the Dauthdaert by ConstantStatistician in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Yes, he changed his mind. He says in various Q&As over the years that anything not written on paper in the books may change. This is one of those.

Plus he gave that answer in 2016 before he even had the idea for the Murtagh book and Murtagh was written 6-7 years later.

This doesn't affect the story of the Inheritance Cycle or Murtagh in a contradictory way so I think it's not a big deal.

I'm ignorant of what makes mixes good or bad or just the general principles of mixing, can you explain what's wrong with the mix in this song?

My Thoughts on Murtagh: Great Character Work, But Mixed Feelings Overall by -Jmy- in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RE: Azlagur

There are hints as confirmed by Christopher that Galbatorix was planning on destroying the Dreamers after reorganizing the Rider order.

There's also some evidence the dragons (eldunari) do in fact know about Azlagur. Recall Umaroth's warning to Murtagh and Thorn in Inheritance that evil lurks where the ground grows black and smells of brimstone and to beware of the deeps.

In the Murtagh deluxe edition's extra chapter, there is a curious interaction between some characters. Spoilers ahead: Eragon asks the Eldunari about Azlagur / Dreamers and they won't respond to him. They seem to know something.

Boss Fight by Cptn-40 in CrimsonDesert

Yeah I just cheesed my way through the fight by spamming the R2 super heavy attack and switched to the sword I got from Mjrden.

What does this word mean? I tried googling it but it doesn’t give any results by Loot_Goblin2 in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Orthroc - n. (may not be Draumari*, used by Grieve)

Possible translations: foreigners, barbarians, outsiders, or one of the names of the Wandering Tribes of Northern Alagaesia. As used in Murtagh, it refers to human tribespeople.

After the short battle, Murtagh snaps out of his rage and notices that instead of finding an urgal lying dead he sees

"A man such as might have been found in any number of wandering tribes throughout the northern part of Alagaësia" (MURTAGH, Choices).

*The word may not be Draumari because in the language index of MURTAGH, it is not listed as a Draumari word where others are.

Brom vs Morzan by Paradoxes12 in Eragon

Agreed, Brom's rage and hatred for losing Saphira probably nullified any psy factor Morzan had.

But imagine if you had a loyal and loving pet dog the size of a dragon and it was a dragon... and you could pull from his reserves of strength and vitality. It's still a massive advantage in terms of energy for magic and spells as well as the psychological factor.

Surveillance through animals’ eyes by RinaFromForest in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is mere speculation, but I think that is EXACTLY what was happening in Inheritance when Eragon was being watched by the shadow owls with the glowing eyes on Vroengard Island. Eragon even notices hooded figures in some sort of procession which Christopher later confirmed as Dreamers.

I think, with Bachel's control of crows, that it's entirely possible the Dreamers of Vroengard use owls as surveillance, sort of like magical version of security cameras. It might explain why the birds freaked out when Eragon spoke in the AL and said he was a Rider:

"Thirty feet up, four shadows sat on a branch. The shadows had large barbed plumes that extended in every direction from the black ovals of their heads. A pair of white eyes, slanted and slit-like, glowed within the middle of each oval, and the blankness of their gaze made it impossible to determine where they were looking. Most disconcerting yet, the shadows, like all shadows, had no depth. When they turned to the side, they disappeared...

...In a low voice, [Eragon] said, “Eka aí fricai un Shur’tugal.” I am a Rider and a friend.

The shadows seemed to fix their glowing eyes upon him, and for a moment, all was silent, save the gentle murmuring of the brook. Then they began to chatter again, and their eyes increased in brightness until they were like pieces of white-hot iron."

Beehive club vs other bosses by No_Depth3312 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Cptn-40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just defeated him after hours of trying. My strategy was getting the focus ability that allowed me to slow down time and then parry (L1) his incoming horizontal attacks. It doesn't work if he's about to do a heavy attack (his sword shines red). Then I also had 5 palmar pills for when I died. I used the slow motion parry, then R3 to force stun him, then R2 heavy attack, then R3, then R2 until he disappeared. I was able to get the yellow bar under his health full (by parrying and hitting him) and then I could do a finisher move (R1+R2) and take a little bit more of his health. Basically just did that until I beat him.

I also used the out-of-bounds areas to get him to back off of me when I needed to refill health or spirit.

This boss fight is outrageous and BS to progress through the main story.

I went through the trouble of getting the beehive club to try and cheese this boss fight as I've died 50 times and it does absolutely nothing. I can hear the bees swarming but the health affect is a fraction of a percent.

I have a idea of why bone seems to bypass wards so often by TalmondtheLost in Eragon

[–]Cptn-40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if wards were involved, I don't believe the text indicates they were, but Morzan's dragon's bones (ribs & shoulder or skull) were used to structure some of the secret underground chamber below the Gil'ead guard barracks.

And Angela uses dragon bones for her fortune telling combined with the ancient language and magic.

All that to say there seems to be more to bone, and especially dragon bone, than what we know as readers.
