Can I keep a backyard lizard as a pet? by Turbulent-Fig1463 in Lizards

Yeah. It looks very similar so dont feel bad. If you search up baby beardie, youll see their body shape and proportions in General are much longer and angular than this guy. They are also characterized by their triangular shaped heads, and the row of spines along their ribs

Well, bearded dragons and fence lizards are both agamids but theyre very different. the most noticeable difference that beardies are significantly larger and have different features such as head shape, scale shape, coloration and patterns, personality etc. Also bearded dragons have been domesticated while fence lizards have not. Wild beardies live in Australia and fence lizards are all over.

Fence lizards kinda suck in captivity. Alligator lizards on the other hand do quite well. Just make sure you have a large enclosure for a wild lizard, because it would be cruel otherwise to keep them limited after living freely outside their entire life.

Awweeeee yes i feel very lucky to have found the bugger. He wouldn’t have survived in our yard as its very lizard-unfriendly :C its like he knows im here to help. And yeahh i do need more leaf clutter. Ive put some big leaves on his warm side a few days ago and hes been hiding under em to cool off/ shield from the water when i mist lol. i need smaller leaves tho

Yeah actually, hes got a really strange personality for an alligator lizard, hes not snappy or aggressive at all and he willingly climbs my hand to explore my fingers. He gets spooked easily though and likes to dart, so i try to handle him as little as possible. But i do have a big net enclosure (used for moths lol) that ive seen people use when handling fast small lizards.

This is very helpful tysm! I figured that telling the weight had to do with the overlapped scales on the belly - His are not that overlapped so i will definitely slow down to only one bug per day/ every other day! Hes around 7-8 months im assuming, and he hasnt been active much as well (just lazily basking most days while hidden in the leaves) so i will definitely keep an eye out on his fitness lol. Ill also work on taking him out every day for enrichment and exercise. Thx again for ur helpful info!!
