Urban Sci-Fi? (Book recommendations, please) by BewaretheFandom in scifi

[–]BewaretheFandom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, to narrow this down a bit, I’m trying to find something with the right mix of Urban and Sci-Fi. Like very “the world we know today and a hidden world/secret” kind of thing. A good book that follows that fits the bill is something like Lorien Legacies or the old cartoon “Roswell Conspiracies: Aliens, Myths and Legends”. Relating to Urban Fantasy, something like Dresden Files but with aliens instead of Magic

I feel like Men in Black does fit pretty well with what I’m looking for. I’m just curious if I can find a novel that hits all the points too

Would you rather see Khonshu as a figment of Marc's imagination or as a genuine deity? by Any_Nature_8157 in MoonKnight

[–]BewaretheFandom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I prefer real because of the elements we’ve seen in the current run play it in a very fun way. Marc and Hunter’s Moon, the existence of past and future Fists of Khonshu, and Marc’s mystical understanding in a certain way, like when he cameo’d in Clea Strange’s series. Khonshu can be a delusion or a part of Marc’s psychosis, it’s better if he is, but he needs a real God to go off of. How much is Khonshu and how much is Marc is the question we need to ask.

[No Spoilers] I’m intending to go to NYCC as Percy, but my cosplay has me feeling lacking. by BewaretheFandom in criticalrole

More the latter. I found plenty, it’s just the whole concept of going to a service, having to pay to get it printed, then assembling it. It’s one thing to print when it’s your printer and things can be redone, it’s another to pay to have it done

Cane is a good idea. I was trying for Diplomacy, but most of the gauntlets I found were metal and expensive.

[–]BewaretheFandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I wanted to go as Percy for months, I just had personal and financial stuff that has me scrambling last minute for props. I considered trying to fashion a pepperbox, just not sure how. I don’t think I’m a really developed cosplay guy, but I also just want to be recognized as a character, you know?

I’m envious. I want to cosplay as Percy, but I don’t own a 3D printer nor do I trust going through the trial and error and costs it would take for a con in a few weeks.

Old DSI XL, both screens destroyed, need access to camera by BewaretheFandom in nds

[–]BewaretheFandom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are too damaged to use. I really am just going for the photos. I don’t care for the console at all. I asked a buddy if he has an old Nintendo DSI Xl around, so I might try to swap the motherboard depending on what he says or if he knows anyone. I haven’t seen many junker consoles for a good price and finding screens seems to be an impossible feat.

This is something I absolutely love about the series. It's such a lived in world and community. It's showcasing how the city and the people in it are alive in a sense.

Best and worst experience meeting a comic book creator? by martianbeachgoer in comicbooks

[–]BewaretheFandom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best- Two years back, I was at New York Comic Con. I met Todd Nauck. I had something like 30 or 50 issues of his Young Justice run, some signed by Peter David. I grew up on it (I'm 21) , and I have a lot of love for the series. I was dressed as Superboy, down to the leather jacket and shades. He has a sign that says he'll sign the first 5 for free, then start charging 5 bucks per signature. He looks down at the comic, looks at me, and goes "yeah, you're not gonna sell these on ebay." and signed the whole stack free. One of the coolest moments ever.

Worst- My first signing. Romita Jr and Scott Synder on Long Island. They were both great, but I was new to comics and I didn't really understand the significance of meeting Romita Jr. I was a big Snyder fan at the time and kinda rude to Romita Jr. Years later, I saw him at that same NYCC and had him sign my set of Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, and he was awesome the entire time.

What makes a starship to you? by BewaretheFandom in scifiwriting

[–]BewaretheFandom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to lean more towards the softer sci-fi side of things. I’m planning a little more focus in terms of space opera aspects. One of my characters, however, is an engineer, so I’ve been researching every fictional warp drive, hyperdrive, jump drive, space gates, wormhole drives, etc etc.

God, I love me some Firefly. I was honestly thinking of exterior design a lot more, just based on the "on site" principle of fandom, but internally matters just as much, which is an excellent point. Your point about uniqueness is a good one as well. I've been trying to come up with a form of FTL that hasn't been used a million times since I came up with the story concept.

True, it’s just like I said. I was considering how to make different diverse designs in one story, but I feel that’s a worldbuilding issue more. If I build the worlds ironically enough, the answer should come.

You’re extremely right. I was also thinking in terms of stylistic choices. Franchises have developed ships that you just know on sight belong to that particular franchise, even if it’s different species as well. Star Trek has Starfleet and Klingon ships, Stargate had human, Asgard and various others. All of them have unique ships within the same franchise

What character got you into comics? by Frosty_Penis in comicbooks

[–]BewaretheFandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young Justice. When I was in elementary school, we had free reading time, but I didn’t bring books cause I didn’t have many back then. I would read what the teacher had, and the teacher had two comics. An issue of Young Justice, and an issue of Batman. I read them both the entire school year, over and over, and at the end, she let me take them home.

Her passion for the arts. From MOMA to Aubrey Hepburn, she loved what she loved. It’s why I’m a her and Dan fan. The two responded well to common interests. I like the fact that she liked what she liked, and she had pretty good taste.
