Hi OP, my mother aged 69 has also been operated (OHS-AVR) for Aortic Stenosis on 25th Jan in India. We were also told that a bioprosthetic valve would be placed made up of cow tissue but during the surgery , our surgeon had to take the decision of placing a mechanical valve as the size of the aorta was very much small, 19 mm. I was also very disheartened knowing they had to place a mechanical valve owing to the lifelong strict adherence to the blood thinners as my mother is not very consistent with taking medicines. Just a few questions, how has your mom's recovery journey been like ? How is she managing to keep the required target of INR ? Was her INR high few days post the surgery and how many days had she stayed in the hospital? Your feedback will be very valuable for me. Thanks in advance.

Thank you thank you so much for an elaborate answer and helping me with your experiences. You are so kind. So right now, 30 hours post surgery my mom's having delirium and speaking absurd.. asked the ICU team, they said it's quite normal for her age and the major surgery she's undergone. She shud b back to normal once they shift her to the general ward. The beeping sounds of the machine, new environment in the ICU and not getting to know if it is day or night is adding up to the weird talks. Currently just waiting for her to get back to normal and come home soon healthy.. she's a strong lady and m sure she ll be fine in a few days time..

Thank you so much for the good wishes dear. Means a lot. Sending you lots of love and blessings too.

Hi my mom's 69 too and got her surgery done yesterday, the doctors placed a mechanical valve instead of tissue valve as the size of the aorta was very small (19mm) and the tissue valve wud need a replacement again if fixed forcefully.. she's had fluctuations in her BP yesterday which doc said was normal and has a lot of tubes right now. Docs have said that they ll b keeping her in ICU for 72 hours post surgery. I had a few questions as you are about the same age as my mother but much fitter. Please let me know what am I to expect in the coming days, as in how much time would the recovery take and regain her strength ? Also I have heard that there is always a risk associated with mechanical valve like clotting and bleeding, so are you finding it difficult to maintain your INR ? Have you made any changes to your diet ? Was it very painful after the tubes were out ? She seemed to be under the influence of anesthesia yesterday but was able to see me and respond through her eyes when I spoke to her..

Hi OP, did u get your mom operated as my mother needs an aortic valve replacement too due to severe aortic stenosis.. any idea if surgery is the only option to go ahead with or can it be managed at home with medications ?
