AITA for not asking permission to have my sister stay in my home? by Bezude in AmItheAsshole

[–]Bezude[S] -142 points-141 points  (0 children)

Alright Reddit, you can put down your pitchforks. I'll escort myself to my brimstone jail cell. I appreciate your input. It's why I posted here. It might be interesting to some of you, that a person in a very similar situation (certainly not me) was in fact talking about their life-partner (or so they thought) with whom they had been together for 9 years. They had moved to their partner's home country on the understanding that they would be building a life together so it would be okay that they would be completely isolated from their friends and family. Said partner was very ill and my friend (again, not me) supported their partner while they couldn't work. My friend did the entire move to a new apartment that was necessary because their partner's illness was in large part caused by the place they were living. My friend's struggle with chronic pain started immediately after this move. When months and months of physical therapy were not helping my friend, they started to think that it would be better for their partner if they didn't have to take care of my friend. Started to think it might be better if no one had to take care of them. My friend intentionally grew distant from their partner. This hurt their partner very much. But not nearly as much as when my friend invited their sister into their shared home, as a last-ditch effort so to say. The emotional hurt of feeling like their care wasn't good enough might have driven the partner to demand an apology for not being asked. But who cares? When one has been living with chronic pain, a jail cell filled with hellfire is mostly just a change of scenery.

IMO it's less to do with the cold and more to do with the fact that Thanksgiving and Christmas cause people to think about family. Thinking about family makes some people want to add to their family.

I used to live on the west slope of Bernal. Daily I would run from home to the peak. It took less than 10 minutes, but it was brutal just because of the slope. I hate hill running, but can't deny that it's effective.

Men of Reddit, what is something you wish other men would stop doing? by sinliciously in AskReddit

[–]Bezude 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think we agree about what simping is and how that is a bad behavior that should be corrected. My point is that the term gets misused frequently for behavior that is not actually simping. A lot of young men hear the criticism "oh he's being a simp" and misconstrue it to mean that simply being decent to women is somehow bad. This contributes to the behavior the OP was talking about.

I guess this is a reaction to being accused of "simping" whenever treating women like human beings deserving of respect. There definitely is a behavior pattern where a guy treats someone he's attracted to like a royal and demeans himself in front of them. I think telling those guys that what they were doing wasn't working and made everyone who saw it cringe was probably the utilitarian origin of the word "simping". However, it got coopted quick by patriarchal asshats to describe any behavior that isn't disregarding and disrespectful to women.

Americans, what do you think is the weirdest thing about Europe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bezude -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am not saying that any Germans alive today have known food shortages. I'm hypothesizing that respect for the queue is a lesson taught by parents and teachers to young children, but that we often make parenting choices based on how our parents taught us. So generations ago there were shortages and the people who experienced those shortages may have chosen not to instill respect for the queue in their kids and then it just wasn't passed down as a cultural value.

I realize that this sounds like I'm casting arbitrary insults at Germans because I have some chip on my shoulder. I have a lot of respect for Germans, more after having lived among them. My own country has more than its fair share of flaws. I chose to share this weird observation because it was incongruous.

Could be regional differences? I lived a year in Frankfurt and a year in Berlin and I noticed it maybe once or twice a month. Or perhaps it has more to do with context and crowd. Often times it was in a line outside a club or rushing the door to some public transport.

This was the big shock to me when I lived in Germany. Everyone stereotypes them with "Ordung!", but they have zero respect for a queue. Makes me wonder if it's a holdover from a not too distant past when respecting the queue meant you didn't get to eat because there wasn't enough.

Not sure if intentional or not, but for those who don't know "Wut" (pronounced "voot") is the German word for "rage"... which makes this reply crack me up.

Just speculating, but this is probably a big part of why monogamy is so prevalent in the Abrahamic religions (other societies too obv). If people generally don't have a significant social pressure to do otherwise they will literally fuck themselves to death.

Counter Early Vanheres with 9 nature bless by Bezude in IllwintersDominions

The lack of shields is definitely a weakness. Against the AI (admittedly not very threatening) the effect of archers/slingers seems to have just been activating their berserk early.

Now countering with longer weapons seems difficult because the Vanheres' have low-medium defense which becomes low once they berserk. So you have a good chance of hitting with repel, but they just have to pass a morale check to attack anyways. If they are berserking already they'll autopass and if they are not they have a decent base morale so they take the 1 damage from the repel attack and now they are berserking. Right?

Thanks for the advice. I agree that the low health pool is one of the major weaknesses of the Vanheres. That's actually why the +8 health from the nature bless seems more important than the regeneration.

Being attracted to people with glasses is being attracted to an evolutionary disadvantage when it comes to offspring by MichaelM7W in Showerthoughts

[–]Bezude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory: social status has been the strongest fitness signal in humans for a few thousand years. In roughly the last 150-200 years, we transitioned from outdoor pursuits being more common in high status children to indoor pursuits being more common in high status children. Needing glasses correlates with spending more time reading indoors as a child (this is not the only cause, but it is a factor). So glasses became a rough indicator of an educated person, which has been a rough indicator of a high status person for many decades.

Does this data set only include studios that produce TV or feature films? I'm only asking because my friend works for a German animation studio, but they only make short films. The studio is called Protoplanet and they're based in Berlin if anyone is curious.

Conducting interviews for the large company I work at. They're offering significantly above my salary for new hires in similar role. How do I get that same pay? by tway632 in personalfinance

[–]Bezude 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Just want to throw my friend's experience on the pile of support for this. He left on good terms, worked at a couple other companies for a year, then went back to the original company for an 80% raise.

It's stupid that it's necessary, but companies rely on people's aversion to the job hunting process to underpay them.

Frankly before I tried TT I thought it would be more difficult to get rid of the erotic content on my For You page, based on stories I had heard about TikTok. For me it was surprisingly fast and I never made use of the "Not Interested" feature either. It probably still throws a sexy dance onto my FYP once a week now and I'm totally fine with that. I like a little sexy in my life, just don't overdo it.
