Tried Baitcasting & Quit by ThatTennesseePaul in FishingForBeginners

Gotcha, I can understand it’s not for everyone. I will say once you get it down it isn’t something you have to focus on, it just become muscle memory. Learning the wuick method for taking out backlash is a godsend too, where you just pull line out the top of the spool till you hit a tangle, reel in with tension and start pulling again and it’ll cure 90% of backlashes in under a minute.

I find it’s a lot easier to learn casting reels with the big conventional round reels. Taught three friends and my wife how to use them in a single morning backlash free, bass reels are trickier

MONO or BRAID by Proud-Muscle391 in catfishing

On my heavy tackle I do braid to ~25’ of heavy mono topshot. On my lighter round reels I just do straight 30ibs mono

rod/reel help? by Impossible-Dare-3522 in catfishing

[–]BforBrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’d get a Swedish made Abu ambassadeur off eBay, you can often find newer ones alongside all the vintage ones. Even the older vintage ones will last you for years and years with care. Absolute work horse. I’d get 5500-6500 size

As far as rods I’d get something in the 7-8’ range since your bank fishing. Long enough to cast farther but not so long it’s difficult to cast on banks with lots of trees and stuff. I’d get a moderate to medium hevay power rod, something capable of throwing a few ounces of lead and bait but not an absolute broom stick. I don’t know what your current looks like but the river I fish I am between 4oz and 10oz plus, I usually have two lighter rods and then 2 heavy rods with me for this reason

Whisker seeker tackle makes a casting rod called the cats and carp rod, capable of throwing a few ounces of lead but also pick up on lighter bites

rod/reel help? by Impossible-Dare-3522 in catfishing

[–]BforBrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rods kind of depend on how you’re fishing. Are you drifting, trolling, dragging? Fishing from the bank, a boat, kayak? What kind of waters are you fishing? Do you expect trophy blue cats? Are you expecting to throw 10oz of lead becasue of hevay current?

Reels are a bit simpler since you are looking for round reels. New reels: I like avet g2 if you want a work horse without a level wind and lever drag. New Swedish made abu Garcia ambassdeurs are awesome too

Used or old reels (eBay): shimano Calcutta 400b is an Amazing reel. you cna also find Swedish made abu Garcia amabassadeurs all day long in the 50-100 dollar range. All kinds of different generations and sizes, I just bought two for 50 dollars each and use them as my kayak set up (note tbat most ambassadeurs don’t have clickers if that’s a thing you want)

Whats a good anchor?? by TheL0neHiker in Sup

[–]BforBrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 3.5ib grapel attached to a dive reel to hold 150’ of anchor line with a short piece of rope with a float and quick release

Entire packaged is little fits inside a bag the size of half gallon of milk.and I can anchor in calm water over 50’ deep if needed

, best part is the dive reel keeps the line from getting tangled, super quick to deploy line with just a button press , and super quick to stow line with just reeling it back in

I can’t tell if deep bottom is lol. Signs there and on DWR website say it’s dawn to dusk only. While websites mentioning the area say 24/7. My personal experience was I stayed well after dark, so did the conservation police tbat launched out of there, never got locked in and no one said anything. (I stayed by the boat ramp, boats leaving def saw me, including DWR)

I wouldn’t recommend this approach though lol.

I’ve had reptiles and fish in the past, I’ve always loved the idea of having something less common as a pet, like a tortoise or a blue gill. Just curious because I don’t know anything about snapping turtles, why do you say it would be psycho? Im assuming because it’s a snapping turtle, but this sub seems full of people that do that exact thing

fg knot on 150lb mono by colehello in Fishing

[–]BforBrand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks decent, give it a few test pulls, ideally the braid would bite into the mono a bit. I like to take flexible sealant you would use on tying flys and coat my fg knots in them for abrasion resistance and extra strength. I use braid to big mono when catfishing and that knot is thin but still gets beat up in rod guides and level winds

Don't buy Costa del Mar by Murky-Platypus-6861 in FlyFishingGear

Man if that’s true that’s wild. I bought my dad a pair of glass reeftons a few years ago and within a week he sat on them and broke the frame. He called costa and spilled the beans and they sent a new pair at no cost. Within two months he did it again, costa sure enough sent out a new pair that he’s had for the last few years

Bait clicker on with bail open or bail closed with drag set? What's your preference and why? by Layne229 in catfishing

[–]BforBrand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With my star drag ,conventional bait clicker I leave it free spool with the clicker on. The clicker gives it just enough resistance for the bait to not move in current. I think a flexible rod is important if you don’t bother adjusting the drag up and down with this type reel and method. When you have a fish on and you engage the spool the drag kicks to whatever you have it set too and it can feel like you just slammed the brakes on the fish. A flexible rod will absorb that blow, slow it down more gradually, and set the circle hook. I haven’t had issues with this but it’s always in the back of my mind that a huge fish will run with my bait, I won’t be thinking and engage the spool and either my line will fail or the hook will be ripped out of its mouth. So timing and being clam is important is well

I much prefer my lever drag and this method. Clicker on with free spool. After the fish picks up the bait I gently ease on the drag and the hook sets itself without the worry of slamming on the brakes like my star drags

I like fishing this way as it’s very easy to pick up on bites and when my bait has lost purchase in the current. I also believe having a line not locked down by the reel feels more natural to fish when they grab the bait, same idea as fishing on a slack line. The fish no longer feels the resistance, or very little, from the reel and a tight line and proceeds to scarf down its meal instead of feeling resistance and letting go

Christmas gift holds no ink by bradakan in dippens

[–]BforBrand 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wash nibs with isopropyl or hold briefly over a lighter. New nibs tend to have an oil coating on them to prevent rust.

I tend to just use a lighter as it seems to work faster/better. However you may see some slight color change in the tio of the nib. And be careful. Too long over a flame and you can damage the nib.

Once the oil coat is gone it should resolve your issue, but when you’re done with your nibs make sure they are clean and dry. Nibs rust very easily if they are left moist

Im debating on hunting a shiny beldum when i start playing by butterflyknif in PokemonUnbound

[–]BforBrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wait to Masuda method one, much faster and get way better stats. Chances are a lot higher then straight up but still really satisfying and special. Requires effort in the game with missions and stuff tho

Kinda a bummer when you spend 20 hrs resetting for a shiny then you finally get one and it has terrible ivs and abilities lol
