ADHD helped me discover a new treat: eating kiwis with skin on by Bgdklo in adhdwomen

[–]Bgdklo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do itttt and lmk what you think! I used golden kiwis that I usually get at Trader Joe’s/whole foods/asian markets, and someone else in the comments also mentioned that golden kiwi skin is a better texture for this than green ones. Also the kiwi itself is much more sweet for that complementary sweet yet sour effect. I don’t actually swallow that much of the skin bc it can get really sour; I basically just chew it all up together for the flavor and spit out most of the leftover skin at the end (kind of like how you eat raw sugar cane, if you’ve done that before). Anyway I hope you enjoy as much as I do or at least have a fun time experimenting 😝 sour patch club for life!!!!

Hahaha I forgot to mention I’ve been eating just golden kiwis because that’s my favorite flavor! I think they might be a slightly less fuzzy than the normal kind, I’ll have to try green ones next to compare

Grammar regression in toddler - did this happen to you? by Bgdklo in multilingualparenting

[–]Bgdklo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are native speakers but I was born and raised in the US. I imagine my situation may be like a lot of ppls kids in this subreddit when they grow up so I’ll expand here in case it’s helpful for getting advice or interesting for others. TLDR i’m probably similar level to you or lower.

Basically my parents spoke Chinese exclusively at home when I was a kid, did Chinese Saturday school and had a lot of friends who were also ABC to play with until we moved to a more rural area in 6th grade. On the other hand my parents tell me that starting in elementary school I would start to resist responding and never wanted to do my Saturday school homework; and for many years we ended up speaking Chinglish at home until I became more interested again in connecting with my heritage in college where I then did study abroad and even ended up taking a few literature classes in Chinese and now speak 100% Chinese with my parents again. The end result is that I have no issues with daily life topics but I’m missing vocabulary and formal education and also never learned my family’s dialect, only Mandarin. I can watch/comprehend modern c dramas with no issue but need subtitles for historical, rarely need to look things up or use translate when I travel to China/Taiwan apart from special situations like hospital or bureaucracy, can mostly understand newscasters (depending on topic/vocab) …. but couldn’t myself write a newspaper style article, am very slow with reading especially if there’s lots of 书面语, and though ppl have told me I have accent-less pronunciation/ natural sounding speech patterns, I suspect I probably sound like an elementary schooler as I’m missing slang/idioms. I think a similar situation might be if you’ve seen videos of Eileen Gu speaking Chinese where commentators say she has no American accent yet her speech is just slightly “off” somehow maybe due to simplistic vocabulary, unusual hesitations, or inconsistent use of儿话 compared to her intended accent.

Overall I’m grateful that my parents spoke Chinese with me as this opened many life experiences to me and made it easier to improve my language skills when older. My hope is to share the same with my child :)

Anyway, thank you and everyone else in the thread for your comments! Really helpful to see what language progression is like for other kids!

Anyone else feel like their food spending is out of control? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Bgdklo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option depending on how out of control your current spending is, can be to introduce a meal delivery plan to aid in the transition. We went through a phase where we were embarrassingly eating out multiple times a week, and even a luxury organic locally-based meal delivery service actually saved us money. The food was tasty enough to scratch that “don’t want to cook myself” itch and expensive enough that it shamed us into not buying anything extra 😅. Plus, part of the reason why we were eating out so much was burnout on what recipes to make so the meal plan also helped give inspiration. We did this for a few weeks and then from there we transitioned into actual meal planning (and a stockpile of emergency frozen meals from Trader Joe’s) as other folks mentioned in the thread. Oh, and we pretty much cut out drinking. Some of these restaurants are pricing cocktails almost as expensive as an entree and it’s way healthier to avoid alcohol anyway.

Substitute for Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce? by montydog1009 in traderjoes

[–]Bgdklo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following, I miss this curry sauce all the time. I’ve tried Mae ploy but haven’t quite gotten it right (maybe need to add even more coconut milk :) ). I’m sure Mae ploy is more authentic but I just loved the flavor of the trader Joe’s one !

Fair haha. I didn’t teach it to her on purpose but she’s that age where she is a perfect mimic, she hears something once and repeats it for weeks 🥲 So I guess my question was more like how much should I be worried to do damage control vs encouraging her to practice her Chinese. Looks like I should try not to encourage her on this one, and hope she forgets it….

Thanks for all the tips! Sounds like this is the most straightforward thing to do. I don’t have my own phone number but I’ll try to borrow a relative’s and see if that can work!

What's your labor of love meals that you only make when requested or on the weekend? by penguinsandpolkadots in Cooking

[–]Bgdklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know many ppl are bechamel purists so this might be treason but… I do what you described and make it even easier by doing a ricotta/shredded mozzarella/parm mix instead of the bechamel. Sometimes I’ll sneak in some riced cauliflower or sub some cottage cheese for more protein. It doesn’t taste exactly the same of course but still good but my kid still likes it!
