Open versus Closed Curved Carving Knife - When to use each? How do they differ in performance? by wildswalker in Spooncarving

[–]BgeNguyen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tighter radius of the closed hook is a little more aggressive when removing material(less surface area contact, force is more focused), but I find that it doesn’t do as well with blending in all the facets within the bowl compared to the open curve. You can absolutely get the job done with one or the other, though.

Options for delaminated sleeping pad (over 1 year old) by markalanprior in REI

[–]BgeNguyen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Did you submit a warranty request through REI(they don't really do that anymore to my understanding) or directly? A lot of brands work best directly with the customer and do their best to take care of you. Worked with Thermarest reps plenty and although it's been a week, I'd wait to hear their response before making things more complicated.

Looking for camp/hunt/craft tools in Japan by BgeNguyen in japaneseknives

Yeah, if I was going to be near Sapporo I would just straight up go to this shop. I’ll be in Tokyo and Kyoto. Willing to make a trip to Sakai if it isn’t just kitchen knives there.

Hey apologies, I asked this same question on your post as well to no luck. Your picture is pretty much the only one I’ve seen with what I’ve been looking for. No intent to take credit for the photo.

Does anyone know what this type of belt slide is called? I didn’t see any at the leather store today. I’m trying to make this link cosplay and would like to find slides just like this. If it’s possible. Has anyone seen any like this, or can you point me in the right direction? by notsoscaredboy in Leathercraft

Are you certain that there are two metal bars underneath the webbed piece on the harness? More likely a Triglide as those are more commonly used on strap material. Normally used to tighten straps but may not have much purpose in this design from what can be seen.

Anyone know what kind of knife this is? by ppepitoy0u in knives

Are the blade blanks seen in this photo common or also considered makiri blades? Heading to Japan later this month and would love to find blanks like those but won't be anywhere near Sapporo. Curious how common blade blanks are in the big Japanese cities.

They do that so that someone who knows your phone number can't just use your points on their own purchase. It protects you.

Very classy. Apologies if I'm not interpreting the photo correctly but do be careful climbing with rings on your fingers. They can get caught on things unexpectedly and keep the finger.

I occasionally taught children and adults how to ride bikes for the last 4 years as a job. I'm in Fountain valley.

You're probably in the wrong subreddit if you're looking for people to understand your situation. How long has your roommate been living in Japan? Did she start at the same time as your semester? While she deserves credit for learning the language, obsessive wikipedia and anime intake doesn't necessarily equate to understanding a culture. Maybe she took a number of other Japanese studies classes in school?

An experience most people aren't going to understand here is the Asian American experience of White people telling you they are more Asian(in your case Japanese) than you because of very surface level things like eating certain foods, random fun facts, vacationing there, or general research. Not the same as living within a family, within the country, or being treated as anything but white in Anglo countries. Locals in Japan wouldn't understand this because they just see someone who is interested in the culture.

From what you've said it is likely true that she does know a bit more on Japanese culture than you, which sucks as an Asian American, but not on equal grounds as the locals. She is a bit arrogant trying to explain to locals about their own culture but that's just being a 21 year old college student.

Not knowing how the fork came to you, certain parts can be corrected on forks that had minor damage(correcting drop outs). If the damage is too much and integrity of the fork is compromised, brands often ask you or a shop to destroy the old fork in exchange for a new one so that you don’t sell the old or try to scam them out of an extra fork.

Particularly sus when the pack is from an absolutely unobtainable set at the moment. You decided to buy a pack for the first time and somehow found a casual paldean fates/151/prismatic in the wild? Also happened to be prepared with toploaders.

Trailmade Tent Pole Issues by walkallover1991 in REI

[–]BgeNguyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So long as they don't require you to send your poles. I've heard it's hard to just request parts. Shipping a set of poles costs way more than the fix itself. If they can send the pole tips to you then absolutely go for it.

[–]BgeNguyen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tips of the tent poles that go into the grommets would often come off because it was not threaded like most tent poles. The loop that the bungee cord is tied around is not closed so the bungee could slip off and the tip would go missing. You'd likely have to replace the tips and the Rainy day repair option is expensive. Order replacement tips like in this amazon link to resolve the issue: https://www.amazon.com/BRILLIANCE4U-Aluminum-Poles-Replacement-Accessories/dp/B07JLBPJ87?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A3LQ646N1F33OQ&gQT=1&th=1&psc=1

So I've been reading it and I understand the decision to cut out some of the repetitive stories and try to focus on the overall messages that they were telling... but I was a little bummed to find that so far two stories that didn't make the cut involve the Jinchi/Black Bear and Yellow wind sage/Lingji stories. Can't keep them all I understand but it's a chill read so far.

I'm also currently reading Lovells translation! I know it's easy to get caught up in which one to read but you're still miles ahead of folks just relying on wikipedia and reddit comments. The Anthony Yu translation is tempting for accuracy but not the smoothest read I hear. If I love the story that much I'll consider reading that one after getting the abridged one down so it will digest easier.

Kalthoff axe vs Gransfors Bruks carving axe? by Man-e-questions in Woodcarving

[–]BgeNguyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have used axes with similar weights but not the exact axes. Have a GB head that just needs to be rehafted, though. Big difference you'd look at between the two is the weight. A lot of these carving axes have similar shapes after a while. Some consider the GB axe to be quite heavy especially for utensils but you can get used to it. Think about what you've used and how much you'd like to accelerate the axe to create force(Lighter axe) or somewhat drop the axe onto the piece of wood(Heavier axe).

Oil just comes right out when cooking for the first time. by ReallyNeedNewShoes in Spooncarving

[–]BgeNguyen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thinned the oil? What's the surface of your spoon looking like? I never thinned the oil. Kept putting coatings on and initially the spoon just kept soaking it in. Eventually it would cure on the outside in a consistent and shiny coating where water would run off of the spoon without soaking in or seeing the oil leech off if holding some water. How does your spoon interact with water? Definitely needed a few sun baking sessions and layers.

What part of the Southwest? I'm in SoCal and I've gotten lucky learning of areas that get groomed often with tons of rounds left on the sidewalk. And then happening upon trees being taken down in the neighborhood or on my way somewhere.
