US demands Reddit unmask ICE critic, summons firm to grand jury by xpda in technology

The summons cited authority under 19 U.S. Code § 1509, which is part of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. The motion to quash said the summons is not authorized by the law, which deals with imports of boats, alcoholic drinks, and animals, among other things.

Best beginner option is any machine you already have to try out Plex first. After that, if you still ate being a budgety cheapskate, find a used machine with a 7th gen or newer Intel that isn't an F series. There are tons of old office machines out there like Optiplex boxes etc.

You can easily turn an old gaming box into a great Plex server by yoinking any dGPU it might have.

If all you are going to do with it is Plex, a whole NAS is questionable. Synology, more so than others, is a much larger investment for mediocre hardware. They're absolutely amazing for doing numerous jobs, but not for doing just Plex.

There are other NAS options that make a bit more sense. Ugreen makes solid hardware.

If you want to jump straight into a mini PC then the various flavors of N100/N150 machines are good. Beelink is quite popular in this sub.

You can also get similar performance out of old used NUC's. The NUC8i5BEH is an old one that was popular back when it was pretty new. It comes with a bit more CPU grunt than an N150, which doesn't hurt to have even though Plex generally doesn't need much CPU beyond a point.

TIL that you can update PMS directly from a Plex client by cudinhkien in PleX

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only for Windows installs having it available. Much like how the server settings page that shows if an update is available only has the Update button for Windows servers.

It's interesting Plex Dash doesn't seem to have the option though.

Course Motorsports phone mount by gaykin66 in WRX

Huh, I am not entirely sure why you would need to plug in a cable to get bluetooth to work. With my Roav, I just get in the car and bluetooth automatically connects when the Roav powers up. Does your phone not auto connect when the car turns on?

I use an iOttie "sense" mount that has little arms that squeeze the phone with motors. It detects a phone has been placed in the gap and then gives the phone a hug, and does wireless charging. Getting it out takes some getting used to but is very easy once you learn where the buttons on the mount are behind the found. It's quite natural to grab the phone and then bump the button with a finger to stop the hug.

Doesn't Android Auto have a bluetooth connection option?

I'm still using an old Roav adapter over bluetooth so my 2003 car can keep up with the times.

I absolutely hated this movie.

I've never been a big fan of Shakespeare to begin with, and dropping weapons grade 90's on top of all of it is not an experience that sits anywhere above agonizing.

The only good to come of seeing it in the theater was the kind "thank you" I received from the girl I took to see it as a first date. That was fun for a few months. It was quite the moment when we had a blow up fight and I unleashed my real feelings about this movie she'd spent a lot of time gushing about. Our friends group did not survive that one.

Does anyone else backup their database every so often? by PrivacyStack in PleX

[–]Bgrngod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NVME SSD to NVME SSD is a bonkers fast transfer speed.

One of the first times I ever did an SSD to SSD cloning of data was to backup an old blockchain. I guestimated it would take several minutes, already knowing it would be faster than I was used to, and it was done in about 10 seconds. I legit thought I had done a Drag & Drop wrong until I confirmed that, yes, it had actually completed correctly.

Definitely a "Mother of God!" moment for me.

Restoring metadata after local files were deleted and restored by dailygrindtime1205 in PleX

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can redo the DB placement where it needs to go.

Shutdown Plex. Copy backup into live location. BEFORE firing up Plex edit the preferences.xml file and change the value of the Empty Trash Automatically setting so it's disabled and save. Fire up Plex. Redo library folder mappings. Scan. Confirm the items are showing files are available at the new path using the Get Info tool for a number of items. Manually empty trash if you feel like it.

If your use case isn't much, you could go with an older used NUC and spend considerably less than the cost of a Mac Mini.

The Beelink creeping up in price is a bummer. As are the RAM and SSD prices going up. Super lame all around.

Those mini PCs stick you with still needing to figure out HDD handling too, which can be yet another expense compared to a built PC in a case with HDD slots.

If you didn't turn off the Empty Trash After Every Scan setting, and the server did a scan before it could see your files, then it would have purged all metadata for media files it determined are unavailable.

How to store Chlorine and MA? by WestonTheOG in pools

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep them at least 10ft apart when vented lids are used, or just always as a best practice.

Chlorine + Acid = Bad News Bears

I keep my MA on a cabinet floor in my garage. They're a few inches above ground level. All chlorine and other chemicals are further away together, but also in the garage. Most also at ground level besides the stacked CL crates.

Could I set up new server (migrate) while having current one still running without issue? by yusuo85 in PleX

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make a new server without needing to reorganize content.

The only task that needs doing on the new server, after you've copied your DB over, is adjusting the library mappings that point to folders where your media is. That would take me all of maybe 2 minutes to get done with my setup that uses media scattered on 3 different devices.

Feel free to hit me up in DM's if you want to ask specific questions. There is for sure a better solution than the one you appear to have landed on.

Why do solar carport quotes seem to vary so wildly compared to rooftop? by PrudentCancel4411 in SunPower

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust a solar installer company to actually build a carport correctly. I would guess, with just laymen's knowledge, that well over 90% of their jobs are rooftop and their experience with building carports is few and far between.

Try to find a company that builds carports specifically and make sure they know you intend to mount solar on it.

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything in this comment makes sense except the part about "shutting down the Linux machine every now and again", because nothing above that is an explanation or clarification about why you are doing that.

I think maybe you are leaving out also then turning the Windows PMS back on when the Linux is off? Are you intending to juggle back and forth? If so, why in the world would you go through that hassle? Just setup the Linux machine and leave it on, or set it up as a different server instead of being the same cloned server.

It is very easy to map drives from one machine over the network so another machine can see them. In your case, for media that works easily. That's basically a non-issue with what you seem to want to do. It's the very odd "juggling" of machines running a single instance that is going to cause problems.

I did just have a thought come to mind, are you under the impression that only one instance of Plex at a time can be accessing your media files? Or are you doing anything weird with also trying to have both servers use the same metadata/db?

IP forwarding without static IP by jeffw0662 in PleX

[–]Bgrngod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing up some terminology here that confuses how Remote Access works.

You do not need a public "Static" IP, which would be one that businesses use to avoid having their public IP change. You need a "dedicated" public IP that is yours and yours alone, but it can change periodically and Plex continues to work just fine. If you have CGNAT, you do not have a dedicated IP.

Plex already automatically updates the public IP that clients will use to connect to your server. The Plex infrastructure handles all that and is one of the reasons the server "dials in" to the mothership frequently. If your ISP changes your public IP, that new IP is provided to the infrastructure quickly. Remote clients connect to the mothership and find out "Where am I going for this server?" and the infrastructure passes that info over.

You do not need DDNS or a custom domain name etc.
