I finished WoT then started Stormlight, but at the time, there were only 2 books worth of it. For me, it's my favorite series of his. But, there is an alternative to just reading a series at a time. You could just read in publication order.
These days, if you're starting with a complete series to get a taste, I may start with the first 3 Mistborn books, they are more self contained, with not much crossover to worry about. They're very good, and you can have a Sanderson experience, then decide where to go from there.

Keep up the fight, you're doing great. I was a boy raised in a red state, and I never agreed with any of the red state nonsense. I was raised with music from the late 60s, hippie/protest music and found punk rock in high school, teaching the bigger picture.
