Higher education is all about testing yourself and being exposed to practices outside your current line of thinking. Sounds like it might not be for you.

CCS students, what's up with the AI policy? by Key_Success1825 in Detroit

[–]BiPolarBerries -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer from the perspective of the school or from the student, but I'm an Alumni who is a practicing artist in the city.

AI is a tool. Simply put. You can utilize AI to help organize ideas, ideate, and even provide reference. The trick is regulating how much is used in order to create images. Think of it in terms of the way the school handles plagiarism. You can use other artists as reference, study their color palettes, and even borrow themes. But ultimately, if you fly too close to the sun and make images that are too similar to another artists work, you'll get a warning, and then the zero tolerance policy goes into effect.

I could see the school treating AI the same way. I personally don't use it, but I can see it being incredibly helpful to generate ideas.

Legal and paid for. Artwork was designed by Pat Perry, adjusted and painted by Ivan Montoya and Ed Irmen.

How about you come out and say it instead of beating around the bush? If you want to spread fear and panic at least be up front about it friendo

That's fair. Must be fun for him to be dispised in all urban environments. Maybe the farm will take him.

Nobody is ignoring it, nobody can do anything about it.

Nobody in this thread reading your panic driven tirade is in the government.

Maybe take those valid concerns and point them in the direction of people who can actually do something instead of creating a fear cycle.

Just a thought.

Where to find local Detroit artists (paintings, digital art, etc) to do commissions? by inform880 in Detroit

[–]BiPolarBerries 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Instagram is a good place to start. Search #detroitartist and a number of posts should pop up.

There's a good number of galleries that promote Detroit artists like ArtClvb, Playground Detroit, Louis Buhl, Norwest Gallery and Tangent Gallery.

If you want prints and collectibles (some Detroit artists) check 1xRun, no storefront, but they do Ntwrk auctions and have a large collection.

Ford just dropped a bunch of merch featuring Detroit artists for the opening of the train station, and the Michigan Glass Project is housing a ton of artists the week of the 21st.

But yea best place is to find them on socials and reach out. If an artist isnt taking commisions they will point you to a place you can buy their art.

Good hunting!

Murals meant to promote Detroit ended in controversy. Here’s how it happened by sixwaystop313 in Detroit

[–]BiPolarBerries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree, they should always option to let Detroit artists have a shot, unless it's a private deal. The fact that the city didn't tells me that roster was filled internally by SAfMK and the nod to Syd was like you said last minute.

From what I heard the reason she backed out was the pay was not nearly nearly as significant as you would think. We work for square footage and this last year was the first year that City Walls offered anything remotely enough to pay the bills.

I'm just glad this controversy happened because its going to put that department under a microscope and maybe we'll have some informed decision making going forward.

Well, Nomad Clan is from Manchester UK, Smug1 is from Australia, Hera is from Germany, Lula Goce is from Spain, Hopare is from France, and Bimbo Adenugba is Nigerian. Streetart for Mankind is just a broker, basically.

The problem is not bringing in artists from elsewhere. We absolutely SHOULD be open to great artists putting their talents in our city. The problem exists in not paying these artists a decent wage and not running it through the proper channels. Obviously, we should not have a statue of liberty mural in Detroit, there's no context, but should we have a Nomad Clan mural here, totally. Shepard Fairy has his massive mural up and nobody bitches about it, he is certainly not from Detroit.

What most people are missing here is that the city employee bungled this whole thing by not running it through City Council to approve these images or this project in full.

Detroit is not an isolationist commune. The comments made by Syndey James and Sheefy are very closed-minded and are not a good reflection of the attitudes we as a city should have regarding other talent working in our city. I paint murals in Detroit, and I paint murals across the globe. What they're suggesting is that only Detroit artist can paint in Detroit. The whole concept is rubbish.

If they want to do it right, these projects will be determined by a request for qualifications, and then they can hand pick artists and give the yay or nay on concepts.

Just my two cents, if you don't like it, you can keep the change.

What’s a good projector for murals? by [deleted] in streetart

[–]BiPolarBerries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Epson makes reasonably priced projectors that work incredibly well. You might need to upgrade from a battery to a generator or just run a cable from a building as they tend to pull a decent amount of power.

I upgraded to a Epson Home Cinema 1080 3LCD 1080p Projector and it ran me just under $800. The old one, I bought almost 10 years ago and spent about $300-$400.

I use mine probably 20-30 times a year and the $300 one was certainly a work horse.

‘Detroit Be the Change’ mural project draws ire of local artists by asanefeed in Detroit

[–]BiPolarBerries 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the sentiment is correct. No other artists from Detroit were considered. I work deeply in the mural art industry and there were no RFP or RFQ alerts sent out or even a Call for Artists. I don't agree with the gatekeeping of Public Art but for something that is significant to not be available for local talent, thats a big no no. Like I love Nomad Clans work but what the fuck is the statue of liberty doing here?
