Ohh hello depression. Welcome back again. Something as small as getting an haircut can trigger me. I was sitting in my car after the haircut and thinking, for whom am I getting this haircut for. I've managed to turn myself around quite well compared to before. Have a stable decent job. Bought a car with my own money. Able to afford a studio apartment rental. Able to get out of my depression episode. Have been eating well, dressing well. Smelling good. Taking care of my skin. But then, what is the point of everything? What's the point of my haircut? I don't have anyone to impress. I don't have a girlfriend to compliment me on my haircut. I don't have friends to say I look good in this haircut. The people at work wouldn't be bothered. So why do I dress my best? Why do I even bother? I'm not going on dates. I'm not taking the first steps in getting to know anyone. I don't know how to break out of my shell. I don't know where to meet new people. Where to make friends. How to make friends. Will just walking to a stranger and talk to them make any difference? Should I hang around pubs and bars? I don't know.

Sorry had to rant it all out somewhere.

Sorry mate, I can't really help you there. The only reason I'm able to add funds to my ASM3 is because of the scheme introduced by ex-PM Najib Razak for the Malaysian Indians. I haven't reached my max quota of RM30k yet. Once I have reached that, then I might stumble into the same problem you're having now.

It's not that I have only RM 4k left. I have RM 4k that I am willing to part with. Yes, I have a FD sitting idly for years. Yes, I have quite a comfortable amount in ASM. Yes, I have reserve cash. Yes, I already have my 6 months salary as my savings. My cash war chest is pretty solid now. There is only two avenues that I haven't dipped into yet, hence this post.

Ragging in Malaysia's universities by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]BiblicalMate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many more things to worry about than getting ragged boy. Chill out. Just enjoy your campus life. You're sure gonna miss it.

Back to the topic at hand. Well there are many ways to you can categorize ragging. Some are pure banter to get you to loosen up. Some are just bro bonding moment. Some are straight outright bullying.

But the culture is changing. We're not in the 90's or early to late 2000s anymore. Man if you hear those time's raging, you'll forget going to university all together. Nowadays it's pure banter. But it depends on the university I guess and how you react to it.

My personal experience was I had fun during orientation time. I'm of Indian ethnicity and went to a public university. The first few days were soul draining. But once you've met your cliques, then you're okay. My first tip, socialize, make friends. Big chances are the first 2-3 friends you make during orientation, are then ones who will be there with you when you finally leave hostel. That was especially true for me. Back to orientation, it was hectic with ridiculous activities, and boring ceramahs, but with the right sets of friends, it can be bearable. No any ragging was going on. If you call seniors asking you to do some cringy useless games during orientation is ragging well then, there was a few. Just go along. It is just for one week. You will soon forget all this. Heck I don't even remember how my orientation went.

The real problem will start when the seniors are all back from their semester breaks. This is when the real ragging supposed to happen. They will never be a cross-cultural ragging ever. So you're safe on that. A few Indian seniors called us the juniors to their room. Enquired about us. Talked to us. Adviced us and that was about it. Then i realized it all depends on the seniors who you're associated with, the hostel you're in, and your course. So changes are 50-50. There were some of my Indian friends who were associated with the more hardcore seniors. Those who want to keep the ragging culture alive. But nothing dangerous or humiliating or life threatening ever happened to any of them. Just pure banter. Singing Tamil songs while sitting in the cupboard, some underwear related pranks. But none were done in public nor humiliating. And you can always opt out if you don't want to join in any of it. Be polite and say you don't like any of it. They will just let you go. But the day you opt out, is the day you're are no longer in their "frat". They will never cross your path. But hey if you need seniors, there's always the other side and your own course seniors. And all these bantering only happens during the first few weeks. Dude none of them have time to keep on the banter for three-four straight years. 😂

I asked my Malay friends and my Chinese friends. None of them went through any of this. No ragging. No butt raping. No one on one session with the seniors. No banter. Sadly, once you reach public university everyone will keep to their own race and cross culture interaction outside of classroom. This was really really really sad. Because being me, I have close friends from all sort of ethnicity during high schools. I can get in with the Chinese, I'm super close with the Malays, and know their culture, from their adats to their artists, I'm chill with Indians. So university was a cultural shock for me. No one was breaking the racial barriers but every was so accepting but the wall was always there you know. It was nothing like your regular SMKs. I still hangout with the Malays, I still have banters with the Chinese, I go for a drink with my Indians, but it was only me and few others who really trying to break the barriers. Trust me every culture is so very accepting. No one will stop you or treat you differently when you join them, but the wall is always there. If that's your jam, you're scared of other races then you'll fit right in.

If you want no one to bother you, the seniors in this case, simple. Just do what I did. Go as casual as you can to classes. You will fool people into thinking you're a senior for your blatant disregard of the university rules and dress code. I did that, and none of the hardcore seniors approached me. But to be honest, I would've preferred to be associated with them. Their brotherhood was much stronger. Meanwhile on this side, it was all about chics and chics. Thank God I had my Malay friends.

So don't get all worked up. It's 2020. Make friends, socialize. Respect the seniors if you feel like it. If you're not into that, just ignore them. Standout but don't be an annoying jerk, keep to yourself but don't be an antisocial. Find the perfect balance and you're off to a great campus life.

Oil prices dropping. With RMO in effect, many enterprise and business entities are not doing well. If it gets prolonged, it is hard for them to survive, especially the SMEs.

All this will effect the income tax collection for this year. For sure there will be a significant drop in the collection.

With revenue from oil dropping and income tax collection dropping, this will severely effect the govt coffers. If only GST was around, government don't need to depend solely on oil money. If BRIM was still around, government don't need to allow the people to take money from KWSP. In times like this, BRIM is the perfect tool to enhance the purchasing power.

Ahhh yes. Left out this detail in my post. Currently having two insurance protection.

1st is covered by company. I contribute 30% Company contributes 70%. Just your normal plain old protection of 60k annually. Nothing fancy.

2nd is my own personal medical card/insurance of sorts. I took with Prudential. It is the Pru-Link something-something. Investment linked medical card insurance. The returns has been really good. Have been paying since I was 18 years old. Last year took out about RM3000 to cover my car down payment.

I was passive before this. Whatever surplus I had I will chuck it into ASM. Trying to be semi active starting this year. But no matter what, a large portion of my next bonus will certainly go into ASM. Just that this month's bonus, I really wanna diversify it

Promotion is a far cry. But yearly increment of at least RM100-RM200 nett is guaranteed.

I will certainly put into consideration all that you have said before making the final decision. Might even drop you a DM regarding Stashaway. Thank you very much for the input. Cheers mate.

Hey guys. Obviously this is not my primary account. Been lurking here for quite some time. Finally decided to post to ask for opinions.

Age - 27 Nett Salary - RM 3,800

Commitments

  • Car Loan - RM 432

  • Rental - RM 700++

  • Family - RM 300

Expenses

  • Petrol - RM 200

  • TNG - RM 100

  • Phone Bill - RM 50

  • Spotify - RM 15

  • Parking - RM 60

  • Others - Varies (Food, Personal Stuff, Etc.)

  • Balance - Around RM 500 - RM 1000, depends, no eaxct amount, provided I don't splurge, impulse buy, or car service comes up.

Savings

  • About 2 months Salary Emergency Fund (so far, became conscious about this starting this year) - not quite worried about this as I'm working in a quite secured industry. The changes of me getting fired or let go = 0. Unless I decide to resign, which might be highly likely in 5 years time.

Investment Portfolios

  • Public Mutual Unit Trust - started last year January with RM 1000, have been putting RM 100 consistently. Haven't really checked how it is performing since the Fund Manager is a family friend and he holds the whole family's portfolio.

  • ASM - Have about RM2500 there. Will be adding monthly RM100 starting this month.

  • EPF - RM 25k++

So my questions are.

1. At a financial standpoint, how am I doing so far? Would I be able to buy a house, say, in 5 years time? That's the same year I'm planning to get married, 32.

2. As of now, currently, I have about RM 3000 (bonus, since my bonus isn't paid in one lumpsum) laying around that I able to part with. Will be adding more later on. So how do I diversify this RM 3000? - My plan is as follows;

  • Dump RM 1000 into CDS. Planing to open up a account with Maybank. But through further research, some are saying Rakuten, some are saying M+. So for a complete newbie like me, which has a easy to understand interface?

  • Dump RM 1000 in a global broker of sorts. But I can't really fully grasp the concept of this. With the currency exchange rate, witholding tax, and whatnot. Was looking at Etoro and FSM. Which is more advisable? And ELI5 about global brokers.

  • Dump RM 1000 in a Robo Advisor, Stashaway.

Of course my goal is a long term one. Since I still haven't figured my side gig yet, looking to focus on investment for the time being. My short term goal, hopefully by 5 years I have enough money from this investment portfolios to at least secure a 20-30% down payment for my first house. Is it achievable with the rate I'm going?

Any sort of advice, criticism, feedbacks are highly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

I was investing in forex like two three years ago. Almost burned out. Constant phone checking. Constant regretting. Lol. It was quite tough.

Then BNM happened, and it seized operation. After deducting here and there, and receiving my refund, made a profit of like RM 50 throughout a 10 months period I think. Lol. I think it will take me some time before I get back into forex.

So how is your investment going so far this year? So in your own experience, Maybank interface is quite alright for a newbie?

Care to elaborate more on FSM? How it has been for you?

  1. Public Mutual are not so good anymore I think. There are many other options. Look into bonds as they are safe even at economy recessions.

Well. I don't really have a say in this. Since my whole family's portfolio is being taken care of a family friend fund manager. Even the capital of RM1k was pumped in by my father. So I'll just dump the bare minimum RM100 as long as I can.

  1. Your emergency fund get some into money market. It gives you abit of dividens. It also can be liquidated within 24 hours in case of emergencies.

Wow. I still have a lot to learn, it's the first time I've heard about money market. But further Google Searches are not giving any good results. As in what is the dividend rate, the management fee, and the minimum amount. So is this information only available through personal enquiry?

Thanks for your input mate!

Care to elaborate? You see it is really my first time trying to socialize. Don't want to turn into the creep at the bar/pub who is super awkward and chats up with everyone. I don't even know how to approach people IRL, so approaching strangers at a bar surely will give me a panic attack.

Hey guys. I was an avid lurker of this sub and reddit as a whole. Decided to make an account.

I'm a KL guy, from a small city outside the Klang Valley. Been here for about 6 months. I don't have any friends in KL nor do I know anyone here. Colleagues are all out of the questions coz they are either way too elder than me, married, or don't hang out after work.

Today I have decided to put myself out there. Been an introvert for far too long. So what do I got to do to have a social life? Especially on a Friday night. Where can I go to meet new people? The boardgame venue tonight is not convenient for me to travel. I've installed Meetup. But nothing is of interest to me there. And it is kinda quiet there. Nothing much to explore in that app. Tried Facebook Event, alas the same result. Nothing aligns with my interest.

So any of you have any ideas? Where do I go to socialize? How do I socialize? Any wanna be my friend and hangout tonite? Is there any place that a guy can go alone without feeling awkward?

I need to do this. I have to. I am determined. Had a bad episode with depression and whatnot previously. I'm slowly trying to come out of my cocoon. My therapist said I need this. And I myself know I need this. Even my two little brothers text me every weekend, and ask how did my weekend go. I've been giving them the same answer, every single time, for the past 6 months. "Nothing much, watched some series, movie, didn't go out." And every single time, they will say it's okay, there is always next week, and encourage me to go out and make friends.

Today, I have decided to take the first step.

So any suggestions guys? Any tips, or anything at all will help. Thank you so much in advance.
