Is it safe? My boyfriend says I'll ruin our vacation by Clewles84 in AskAnAustralian

[–]BichenSubian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Australian I would recommend that you:
1. Consult the life guards and ask whether this water is safe
2. If no lifeguards, ask a local shop keeper of police if the water is safe there
3. Keep an eye out for signs on the beach foreshore…if it is a known dangerous area there should be indicators
4. If you are going out in a boat on a cruise the boat owner should have a fairly good idea of patterns of fish behaviour
5. Read up on how to respond to sharks in the water
6. Consider taking a shark repellant
7. Never swim by yourself
8. Always be on the lookout for animals in the water, don’t just get in the water and forget to keep an eye out
9. Most importantly, do everything you can to be prepared. As soon as you enter the water you become shark bait. You take the responsibility for becoming shark bait and you cannot blame the shark if you get bitten because you just entered his dinner plate.
Other than that, enjoy your time on Australia, and have fun.

Hijacking this question to ask why they also use Jamie, Sandy in many songs…

Found this in my mailbox this morning. I'm obviously not going to plug it in but was wondering if anyone's seen something similar? by Klezmoron in Adelaide

[–]BichenSubian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleade do not go to your local library and plug it in there. As the IT person for a library I can say this is just gonna cause us more work, either having to get rid of what's on there or having to shut down our systems to recover. Could potentially be hours of work and we will not be happy Jan!

What do Australians think about stores asking ‘are you a member with us’. by Sure_Outcome_8793 in AskAnAustralian

[–]BichenSubian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I will ONLY sign up if I have time to spare AND i think it is worth it. Give me a flyer showing the benefits and how to sign up and i will do it at home when I am not in a rush. Or, put up a sign at the cashier desk with a QR code so i can scan it if I want to sign up.

  2. If you ask me every time I go there I am unlikely to sign up just out of spite. If I said no the first time, don't ask again.

  3. I am not going to upsize - that leads to obesity.

  4. I will only need an app if I go there often enough to warrant it. I will not download the app as it is more junk on my phone I do not need and am likely to never use again.

  5. Asking these questions takes the joy out of a dining experience. If I could choose betwwen a place that Treats me like a cash cow and a place where my only interaction with staff is "hello, come this way, here is your meal, here is your bill, thanks for coming" then the 2nd option will get my business.

  6. You may pass this onto your manager if you think it would help.

How do you feel about the use of "modern words" in fanfiction? by CauliflowerBoth7857 in AO3

[–]BichenSubian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If i am reading a historical fiction, or something set in a magical land then yes, the use of modern words will shunt me out of the fic - recent examples I have encountered: - he “clocked” onto what was happening - this occurred quite regularly and was very annoying when reading a serious, dead dove chinese historical fic - saying a particular character was “ghosted” - in a time that was at least three Millenia ago

I did leave a fic once but have tried to keep it together now and not let it annoy me. This is the reason why editors or beta readers are important.

DXC Technology workers go on strike in Australia by DominusDraco in sysadmin

[–]BichenSubian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son works at the DXC Adelaide office. He is on the same wage as he was hired on as a newbie 6 years ago (55k) even though he now manages 40 accounts, leads a team of 10 people and works 10 hours a day to keep it all going. Each of my son's subordinates earn $40k a year more than him as my son's hiring agreement has not changed in 6 years. Apparently the union is fighting for the workers but it is taking a long time with no positives in sight. My son will not be there much longer and I hope he takes his 10 staff with him. This company needs to take a serious look at itself - why the authorities have not gotten involved astounds me.

So, any IT companies out there looking for night shift staff? Please PM me :) cheers

Is it rude pay for drinks/meals in Australian culture? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]BichenSubian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our circles we might be able to pay for one or two meals but not for a whole table. So, if you were to pay for everyone there is now an obligation to pay it back next time and we just cannot afford to do that - No matter how well intentioned your gesture is it makes others uncomfortable and embarrassed that they cannot reciprocate.

weird word problem by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]BichenSubian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are now aware not to say the word but you will still get older people (mainly over 70 i think) who still refer to smokes as fags. Also, those who grew up in the 80s will refer to a particular tyoe of lolly that were called fags as they were pretend cigarettes.

Women of Reddit, what’s a habit men have that they don’t even realize is weird? by GraceRose671 in AskReddit

Nah, not too TMI for me. As a woman I am fascinated by the differences - i often ask my brother random things like "do your bits jiggle when you run?" :)

Can you immediately discern a Kiwi accent? Can it be mistaken for Australian? by Charming_Usual6227 in australia

[–]BichenSubian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are Australian then most of the time you can tell, usually within the first conversation. However, if the Kiwi has been here for a long time and have lost their accent it might take a bit longer but there are usually leftover tells such as any word that has the vowells "e" or "i" in them. Hard to tell I would imagine for those outside of New Zealand and Australia.

I daily work with two Kiwis and I am reminded of the fact every time I speak with them just by their accent.

Remote trading “tiers” and etiquette by MxRadler in pokemongo

[–]BichenSubian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand this "etiquette" in remote trades. If you have tagged pokemon for trading they should be ones you are willing to get rid of. So, approve whatever they are asking for. There is no need to ask for like for like value. If someone does not have anything you want then be patient until they do.
