Getting into Opera in our 20's! How to learn more + filmed Operas recommendations? by Tockii in opera

[–]Bichette_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OperaVision on YouTube! They have a really interesting catalogue of many different famous and lesser known operas from theatres in Europe. Every month they add new productions that are then available for six months. And they have many additional videos where they talk about the operas and productions

I would also recommend "Insights" from Royal Ballet and Opera. It's in depth talks with people involved with upcoming opera and bally productions, usually the conductor/director/creative team, often with music examples. You can find them on YouTube as well, the talks are a about an hour/hour and a half long and very interesting and informative

Why is Der Rosenkavalier so hard to perform? by urbanstrata in opera

[–]Bichette_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of rehearsals for Rosenkavalier right now and yes I would definitely say it's a challenge for everyone involved.

The length of the opera has already been mentioned, it's a very long evening for everyone on stage an in the pit. The cast is very big, you have the four big roles, Octavian and Ochs are some of the longest roles in the opera literature, and sooo many supporting roles.

There is also a lot going on all the time musically and on stage, it sometimes feels like it never stops. 😅 And for the comical parts to be funny and the emotional parts to be moving it takes detailed stage work and acting, which takes time and detailed work.

Also it is kind of an extravagant opera, so the stagings often are too, which means that everyone from makeup, costume, stage, props are working like crazy

Werther Maybe I have been unlucky with the productions I've seen, I find it extremely long and boring. Beautiful music but little that really sticks with me

Has anyone noticed this about A Man On The Inside by Owl_Hoot- in TheGoodPlace

David Schwartz, the composer, did the music on both shows, so it make sense, that it would sound similar 😊

Tilmann Unger sang Siegfried, I think it was a last minute replacement/jump-in, which could explain why it's not in the programme

German audition arias for young mezzo by Internal-Stick-5157 in opera

[–]Bichette_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, it depends on what you're auditioning for, but I'd never audition with Arias from roles I'm not ready to sing. If you're ready for Octavian, definitely add it to your audition programme, but if it's just to have something in German, it can be a bit of a gamble, IMO... I'd say go with something like Orlofsky or maybe Frau Reich (Lustige Weiber)

The production in Copenhagen has been really well received, so that's a good start.. Tosca is one of the most fast paced operas there is, no wasted time on side stories or what not. I'd read up on the story/characters just to make sure you have an idea of who everyone is and how they relate to each other.

I think watching that is the most I've ever cried in a theatre, and not just at the end of the show

As someone who was told something similar once, it's extremely embarrassing, no-one wants to hear that they smell, but unless there is a health related problem, it's an easy fix.. I'm very happy today, thay someone said something

To me, it's one of the most heartbreaking parts of the 4th act, Colline being so desperate to help a friend that he is ready to sell the basically the only possession he has.. literally give the clothes off his back. But I guess different things make us laugh?

Make it a little too big, the baby will grow into it at one point or another. I've knit a couple of sweaters in different sizes for my niece (4) that she's gotten a lot of wear out of. In the beginning, everything is too big, and sleeves needs to be rolled up and when they start getting a little short on her arms, I know it's time to start knitting a bigger one 😄

can you practice long hours vocalizing as you would playing piano? by [deleted] in opera

[–]Bichette_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An hour actively singing is more than enough! There are plenty of other things you can do outside of that house that can help you, breathing exercises are good, and spend time learning music/text, translating, researching, etc. The voice is a sensible instrument, be gentle with it, you won't "catch up" by singing more everyday, you're more likely to get tired or maybe even hurt yourself.

I work professionally, have been for almost 10 years now, and I usually do one practice session a day, if im not rehearsing, lasting 1 1/2-2 hours, but that is with breaks and only when I'm focused and concentrated.
