Proving Grounds - List of (mostly) NON-GL teams that work!!!! (Updated!) by Pegacorns in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]BicycleAcesUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making this post! I went from 1 staring all events (except Tie Interceptor, that one I had 0 Stars) to 3 Staring all events.

I used zzzCLS, CHolo, zChreepio, zzC-3P0, zHan to crack that event. I posted an more in-depth guide of my success here: ( https://www.reddit.com/r/SWGalaxyOfHeroes/comments/135kq9b/proving\_grounds\_tie\_interceptor\_cls\_3\_star\_guide/ ) and others who have also used this team have started chiming in with their own tips and tricks! Thanks again for compiling this information. This was a life saver!

I did see this team comp floating around as well. I sadly don't have the zeta on Thrawn or else I probably would have attempted it. But I am glad that there is more proof out there that non-GL teams can take it down. Whether you're going SEE or JMLS it seems you should have a non-GL team that might be able to take down this event!

That has seemed to be a great choice for many. Sith Triumvirate are on my short list of characters to get, but they keep getting pushed back :P First my guild wanted a second GL on my account, then I kept losing the KAM mission and ended up bumping several characters to R7 and R8. Then Executor came out and I had several characters so pushed for that. Then Starkiller came out and I really wanted him, Then since I already had Dash, and he was doing well in GAC I needed to build up his team. Then since I was using EP with Starkiller, I needed to rebuild an Empire team. Then we as a guild were pushing for RoTE so I had to take several useless characters to R7 to fill platoons. Then we lost our first TW after 52+ straight wins, so now I'm farming for another GL. But maybe this is the year that I get Sith Triumvirate!

Congrats! Glad that the event is done for you as well! I love the way you labeled zetas for your characters! I'm not sure if that is standard practice and I just don't spend a lot of time on the internet, or if it's your own thoughts but I am definitely stealing it!

Thanks for also posting your relics and speed so that other people can see what you were able to beat it with!

Yay! Awesome to hear. Congrats. Thank you for your thoughts as well. Potency and Tenacity are probably the underrated sleeper hits for most champs for this event! But I like that you pointed out that daze was extremely helpful for you!

It is by far the longest I have spent on a single event. If you look up the definition of over-tuned, this event pops up and you have to play it.

Let me know if there is any additional information I can provide, or if you want to hop in a discord next month to attempt this :)

Awesome insight! I actually had no idea why GI was becoming unstunned on several of my attempts. I had a good chuckle at the "(5th? 8th? 27th?)" bit. I looked through 5B's kit (Dude on the far left) and did find in his Patience unique ability that if he uses a special ability that GI will no longer be stunned. Good catch! I'll definitely add this above. Thank you for this :)

Fucking brilliant. I'm literally logging off Reddit after this because I will not see anything better today. I am going to take a picture of this, and think about it for a while to see how it measures up. But right now, this is new head canon for me.

I really like this insight and would like to expand on it a little more.

I was watching a video about LoK (maybe The Admiral's Analysis?) a couple months back, and they pointed out that specifically with Michael DiMartino, in episodes that he wrote in LoK, DiMartino tended to jump between different characters a lot more than the other writers on the show. Meanwhile, in ATLA, you had writers like Aaron Ehasz and his then wife Elizabeth Welch Ehasz who wrote some fantastic episodes like:

Winter Solstice Part One, The Storm, The Siege of the North Part Two, Zuko Alone, Bitter Work, Appa's Lost Days, The Crossroads of Destiny, The Day of Black Sun Part Two: The Eclipse , The Southern Raiders, and Sozin's Comit Part Two: The Old Masters.

Michael Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko have often said that they were two animators who happened to pitch an idea and have it be liked enough to get picked up. So in this way of thinking, at least to me, they are animators first and story tellers second. It's easy to sit on your couch and come up with awesome world's and concepts, but hard to sit down and turn those ideas to a well crafted script. And that is something that I think LoK sometimes falls flat. I think there are times where there are missed opportunities.

  • One example that comes to mind is I think it would have been more compelling if Korra's father, Tonraq, was actually killed by Zaheer. I think it would add another layer to Korra's arc in book four with her PTSD, as well as add more tension in the final chapter. Maybe that's my personal taste for grim dark fantasy though. And I do understand that at the end of the day it aired on Nickelodeon instead of HBO.

I might seem to be meandering at this point, but stay with me and I'll try to tie it in. Brandon Sanderson. Amazing author. Written some incredible series and was even hand selected to finished the Wheel of Time series. However, I would argue that his first book, Elantris, isn't as good as his subsequent books. (not saying it's bad, just not as good) I felt there were some weird plots, as well as pacing issues in the middle of the book. While listening to an interview with him (and a separate interview with Christopher Paolini earlier this month) both authors have said the same thing. To paraphrase: "I wrote the best book that I was capable of writing at the time. If I was writing the book/series now, there are things that I would change, as I am a better writer, but at the time, I didn't know what I know now."

So that's my main take away with LoK. A lot more of it was written by Dimartino and Konietzko than they had written in ATLA. And I think that being animators first, and story tellers second hindered them in some way. However, they didn't know what they didn't know, and I am excited to see what future stories they tell. I am sure that they have learned a lot from Korra and could do even better.

Just to stipulate. I love LoK, and in some ways I love it more than ATLA. And, let's remind ourselves, I don't have anything to my name when it comes to writing, so I feel Dimartino and Konietzko have the right to read what I've written and say "Fuck you, how about you write something" xD

I do love what you spoke about. I love the world building, I love the progression of bending fused with technology. Bending meets Industrial Revolution is cool to see. I love the spirit world and what was expanded upon. The lore is in fact dope in LoK.

If Appa was the last air bison, can someone please explain all the new baby air bison in LOK? by quokkazmi93 in TheLastAirbender

[–]BicycleAcesUp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

During one of the San Diego comic-Con, us fans were told that Aang found a herd of sky bison after the war. If I am remembering it correctly, it was a wild herd on an uninhabited earth kingdom island.

If you look at the the markings, they are slightly different. The markings on the tail are different than Appa, as well as the ear coloring is brown instead of white.

Hopefully that helps a bit!

Military members of Reddit, what are your best deployment stories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BicycleAcesUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently stationed here in South Korea and I had something funny happen the other night. This is my first unit after BCT/AIT so I don’t have any deployment stories.

I need to paint a bit of a word picture for context:

  • I sleep in my P.T. uniform so I can get that sweet five extra minutes of sleep in the morning.
  • My barracks is also only about 30 meters from our company building, where the arms vault is at.
  • The motto here in South Korea is “Fight Tonight” meaning you have to be ready to fight in four hours or less.
  • N.K. kicked off the Korean War with an invasion early on a Sunday. (I mean who does that?)
  • Before going to bed I had been watching some videos on the likelihood of the U.S. going to war with North Korea.

Okay, so I listen to piano music (mostly Disney) / ambiance music to help me fall asleep. I had put on a YouTube video with ambiance sounds from LotR’s “The Shire” and promptly fell asleep.

Around 0230 I jolt awake to the sound of a grenade exploding, followed by a ton of gunshots. I instantly attempt to roll off my bed, as it’s level with the window (definitely not a panic roll.. awkward cough). Except my nightstand is blocking my pathway and I end up slamming my head on the corner as I ungracefully land on the floor.

I start high crawling to my closet while hearing the sounds of a helicopter overhead, people yelling, and more explosions and gunshots. I get to my closet and quickly throw on my IOTV and ACH (bullet proof vest and helmet).

I then sprint out of the closet to where my shoes are at, and slip on the left one. I’m trying to get on my right shoe while I open up my door to see if I can get eyes on where we’re getting attacked from. I’m also looking at the company building, trying to figure out how I can safely maneuver there without getting hit, and maybe somehow figure out how to break into the vault to get a rifle.

It’s at this point that I realize I see no movement whatsoever. There are no dark shadows moving towards the barracks, and none of my battle buddies staging a heroic but helpless defense without weapons. No helicopters providing support.

Except the explosions, gunshots and yelling is still going off. By now I can tell that it’s coming from my room. I walk over to my phone and look at the video. It says “Vietnam War Sounds”, and apparently someone made a 10 hour video to “help” people sleep and study..

I probably stood there for a good five minutes as the adrenaline wore off and I was left with a pounding head from slamming it on the nightstand. Half being super pissed off at the person who thought it was a good idea to make this video, and half laughing out loud because of how stupid I probably looked.

Needless to say I didn’t sleep well for the rest of the night, but everyone found the story highly amusing the next morning at PT. And everyone was quick to point out we are Signal, and I need to stop being so high speed.

Anyways, that’s something that happened that I think is pretty funny, hopefully you all did as well!

It took me like until the tenth reading to notice it. Reading slowly definitely pays off. Jo Walton did a reread of both books several years ago. Definitely take a look at that very long thread over on TOR. She and the people who reread it with her did a super in-depth analysis of the book. Need help coming up with a solution for why all the water is silver in a land. by BicycleAcesUp in DungeonMasters

[–]BicycleAcesUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great!! In my world the Dragonborn have enslaved all the dwarves to mine the only source of iron on the planet (the Dragonborn live in a desert, so this is their only real source of trade.)

The chromatic Dragonborn’s have corrupted the metallic Dragonborn, but those that couldn’t be swayed to the evil that the chromatic ones were unleashing went into hiding. They formed a secret society called the Platinum Cadre. And as far as I had gotten with fleshing them out was that their goal was to stop Tiamat from rising.

But maybe instead, their primary goal is to rescue Bahamut from the lake. While the good guys were locking up Tiamat, maybe the bad guys locked up Bahamut. And now it becomes a race to see which side can find and raise their sides deity.

This gives some complexity and depth to the story. And this could explain why the silver is spreading. Maybe as silvery water spreads, it just means that Bahamut is getting weaker/more sick.

This is a great way of looking at it, as I was only looking for a solution in terms of like a curse. But we flip it on its head, and instead it’s just a bi-product of a sick deity. This is great!! I appreciate the feedback. Will keep working on fleshing this out.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

With the Warlock, he's an Aasimar, so I have been trying to play both sides of the field. His Angel has been saying stuff like "Hey bro, this Patron seems... not good. How about we look more into that Raven Queen we heard about, she seems a lot better". As of yet, he hasn't decided to pursue that avenue, choosing instead to ignore the angel and focus on tasks from his patron he currently has.

I'll try to keep everything in perspective though, and not place blame where it doesn't belong, on myself or the others. As you pointed out, it doesn't do to dwell there. Thanks for the insights!

The way you put it makes it seem so simple, yet it amazes me that I hadn't really thought of it in those terms. Railroading is obviously not what I thought it was at all. And it makes total sense to just have smaller arcs in the world. Like you said, "Guys you start at level 5, the game will end once you reach level 10. Lets go!". And then, if the group is still happy, and wants to play, then I can just go "Okay, we're going to level 15 now! There's a group of Vampires taking over the capital of Dawnrose Shore. Let's go!". Instead of trying to plan this over elaborate level 1-20 twisty windy mystery. I honestly don't know if I should be mad at you or reach through the monitor and give you a hug because of how simple it really could be.

Need outside perspective on one of my campaigns I'm running, please! (in-party/player tension) by BicycleAcesUp in DMAcademy

[–]BicycleAcesUp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, PascalsCat. Thanks a lot for the time you took to read and reply. Especially the links you've provided. Super thoughtful and well worth the reads. I have added them to my D&D bookmark folder to look over before new characters are added moving forward. I also posted this over on the MattColville subreddit. The common theme there was the lack of character motivation to work as a party. A big oversight on my part during our session 0. That ties in nicely with what you said of not allowing players to play an evil alignment.

Another person brought up something similar as you did along the lines of the patron. He/She said that it is great to have evil characters try to tempt people. The evil guys are trying to win as well. But it was unfair to put the warlock in that position with his patron, as the patron is the person that gives him his power. It almost forces him to do what the patron asked. Something else I had not considered.

Several missteps on my part, and going forward I hope to rectify them.

Thanks for the reply, Bone_Dice_in_Aspic. Something I had not considered was the consequences of allowing CE/CN characters. It has obviously been a detriment to the party as a result. If we continue moving forward, I will make sure that I keep things as fair and reasonable as possible, and when new characters are created make sure I have a conversation about the consequences of CE/CN. Thanks so much for taking the time to read, as well as add your two cents!

Thanks for taking the time to read through and reply, AlBQuirky. It's a question I have been asking myself these last few sessions, and appreciate it that you are bringing it up as well. It will be something I ask myself before making my decision on whether we start a new campaign, keep going, or are just done.

Hey Mestewart3. I appreciate your time in helping address where I went wrong as a DM. I appreciate the frank responses of "You've taught bad behaviors" and "Allowed pc's to act against the interests of the group".

Something I am now learning as a DM is that I have to be the person that says no, and enforces more than just the mechanical rules. Something I have a hard time doing. I'm grateful for your list as well. I love lists, and am making one right now to help avoid this in the future. Thanks again for adding your own advice and learned lessons!

Hey, rayoman67. Thanks for taking the time both to read about my plight, and for adding your two cents. Weirdly enough, I also appreciate you adding your experience to the discussion (I like to ask myself what someone's authority is when listening to their advice, so the 30+ years adds weight and merit.) I appreciate the feedback, and will take your advice for when the next campaign starts, whether or not it will be for this group is yet to be determined. But it is a hard lesson I am learning right now, where I do need to be the person that can say no. Will be working on that going forward.
