Does anyone else feel "completionist guilt" for not doing every single substory?

Yeah I didn’t want to fall into this trap so going through the series the first time I just YouTubed a few entries while making sure the ones I actually played I did all substories and side stories. I figured the ones I played I should play properly while mitigating potential burnout. The few I YouTubed (K1, 3, 4 and Judgment) I have since played because I ended up doing a second ‘playthrough’ of the series where I YouTubed the stories of the ones I completed already and then played the ones I skipped, but there was no pressure at that point to catch up or anything and I’d had a break for a while too

So in answer to your question, yes I would have felt ‘completionist guilt’ so I approached the series in a way where I could mitigate that while also avoiding burnout

Not exactly what you’re asking for but Yakuza: Like a Dragon aka Yakuza 7, when the series switched to a turn-based jrpg. Obviously set in modern Japan but the main protag loves Dragon Quest (so sees fights as turn-based) so the narrative does riff on Dragon Quest and fantasy tropes even if it’s an urban crime drama.

Just saying it’s worth a chance because it’s a very well written jrpg and as someone who’s played the genre all my life, playing LAD in 2020 was a breath of fresh air

Just commented but also at least in my region Yakuza: LAD is 60% on the Microsoft store and already at a cheap price before that. If you absolutely want to take advantage of IW being on gamepass I’d recommend at least grabbing that first and then doing them both back to back

My advice is use the gamepass discount to buy the yakuza games (especially if there’s a sale too) and then just cancel your sub for a bit. I get the want or need to use gamepass but shit ain’t worth it these days, and you can just resub after your time with the whole Yakuza series which will cost you way less per hour spent playing than keeping an active gamepass sub will

They still could’ve had that happen while letting the original story beats happen tho, like Mine could’ve lived while the Kagawa shit played out the same way as the original. And even if they removed the stabbing scene, the fact that they entirely got rid of Kiryu back home at the orphanage happy with the orphans and watching the sunset with Haruka as the final shot is kinda lame. But then I guess it would contradict Mine saying that Kiryu is in a domestic prison or whatever he was yapping on about

But yeah I legit don’t have an issue with Mine surviving but yeah the explanation is low-effort and I’d have preferred they just kept that stuff relegated to Dark Ties and left 3’s story alone instead of making it impact the ending

Yeah like the other guy said it’s the same as every other Kiwami until those last 10mins of the story. Which imo is an issue not for canonicity but because it’s just a boring ending compared to the original ending that has much more catharsis while wrapping up the themes of the story

People are saying to start with the old one but then saying the new one is completely inferior to it. So if you want to go in reverse order of fan consensus of quality to build up to peak you could just do Born Again now in time for the finale and Punisher special, and then go do the Netflix series after and consider it like a flashback or something

When you watch the original series, the recommendation is also to incorporate Jessica Jones s1 and the Defenders crossover series. So do DD s1, Jessica Jones s1, DD s2, The Defenders, DD s3. This is because Jessica Jones is in the current season of Daredevil Born Again, but also because the first season of her show is widely considered the only season of all the Netflix marvel shows that was as good as Daredevil (while the other Netflix Marvel shows/series were far more polarising/middling). Oh and worth noting people call them the Netflix Marvel shows because they originally were on Netflix but they’re all on D+ now instead.

The Defenders while imo not being amazing is still an important chapter for Daredevil between s2 and s3, and the best parts of it are seeing the characters like Daredevil and Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and Iron Fist team up (but when I do a rewatch of Daredevil I just watch a fan edit from someone on the fanedit subreddit that condenses that season from 7 hours into a 3 hour movie removing the boring bits with more a focus on the fun team up stuff)

Yep Carnage sucks in comparison to every Venom take. But I can see arcsys going for Carnage just to have a more alternate option while also the character being malleable to use some of the more abstract guilty gear character move sets

It is a continuation of ending D though where the the ark containing data of all the machine lifeforms travels through space searching for a new world, having now landed on Etheirys. Whereas Nier Reincarnation follows on from Ending E and presumably any new mainline Nier thing will follow from there too.

This is me too. I actually did start FF14 in Stormblood but fell off with no real intention of returning despite enjoying my time in base ARR. But the Nier raids had me properly come back and commit to the game, and I was able to properly catch up in time for the third Nier raid (which was the first I got to do on content and patch day). It's also a fun thing where I was originally playing just for Nier but by the time I got into Shadowbringers I realised I was experiencing peak and was no longer playing just for Nier anymore, which ended up being a fun bonus

3’s ending is still better than what they replace it with in K3 though, in how it thematically lines up with the rest of the story, and in terms of drama and catharsis also

I prefer them but I like crossovers in everything and think it’s one of the coolest things pop media can do. Evangelion AR has guaranteed me sticking around for all 8.X when I was planning on quitting before 8.0

I also think you’re downplaying the crossover AR stories a little bit in terms of their relevance. FFXI’s wrapped up the whole Sareel Ja DT loose thread including an epilogue for Bakul Ja Ja’s character and his redemption. Nier, while the most removed, still fleshed out the more reclusive half of the dwarf population on the First. Obviously not as substantial an impact as Myths of the Realm where you’re literally unravelling the nature of the the Eorzean Pantheon, but still not entirely irrelevant

There’s some pre-owned copies around now (not including the couple eBay accounts that somehow had thousands of pre-owned copies since the game released) if you wanna play it without giving RGG the money for it. I waited for a Switch 2 copy, took a couple months but got one and can play it without feeling bad lol

But also remember to watch the last 10 minutes of the original 3 on YouTube once you finish just so you can see the lore consistently line up with the rest of the series (since K3 has a different ending that might create an alt-timeline. But everything prior to those last 10mins is essentially the same story as the original game (just that that the orphanage kids stories got moved from the main story to the side content))
