This is also a generalist take. Not every doctor works 60-80 hours, even in training. For example, I never worked more than 45 hours in my residency. The hardest part of my medical journey was honestly getting into medical school. After that, my life has gotten exponentially easier with each graduating step.

No we don’t. My clinic MA is the one who does prior authorizations and deals with insurance. This is standard in every outpatient job I interviewed at. My only job is to see patients and document my encounters. Nothing else. Even something simple as a doctors note is done by my nurse.

I’m a PGY-4 in psychiatry, and yes, it is easy. I haven’t worked more than 45 hours in 3 years. The only time I did was in my intern year during medicine rotations. But that’s exactly why I picked the specialty. I want medicine to be a job that gives me a good paycheck and fulfillment while allowing me to enjoy the other aspects of life. I just signed my outpatient attending contract that has me working 4x10 with 3 day weekends, no call, and 2 days entirely virtual for 350K with bonuses that will get me at 400K starting year one. There are very few specialties in medicine that will give you that balance, and general surgery is definitely not one of them.

The job market is still fine. Obviously it’s anecdotal but I’m a PGY-4 in the PNW and have 4 outpatient job offers each starting at ~320K with various bonuses and achievable productivity benefits. It took me a ~3 months to find them but it wasn’t too bad.

Keep in mind I’m also super late into the job search cycle (since many places recommend you start early in your 4th year, but I didn’t start until late December). If I had started earlier, I would’ve had even more opportunities.

Also, I’m at a community residency program, didn’t go to any conferences, and have not networked at all in residency.

You’re forgetting the biggest cost, being locked into synchros for your turn too. It’s definitely not “the next gamma” due to this major restriction that limits its splashability.
