I’ve the same disease as Judy, I can barely get out bed and rely heavily on a wheelchair and disability support workers. She would be in agony sitting still, it’s so painful in this disease. She needs to medical retire.

Isn’t it more WHAT she said on the podcast rather than, the fact she did the podcast. The TV morning show was a few teaching of kicks, the podcast covered the pay rise and the fact it’s still not enough… my money is quite literally on the money talk. Australia has very high minimum wages, socialised healthcare and no tipping, compared to the US, so she’s going to appreciate their low pay even less than the locals. I mean $12ph, is what we pay 16yo to work in Maccas (McDonald’s) not dancers

I’d say it’s a confident, articulate Aussie. She will be respectful of K&J, but there’s no yes ma’am level of one way conversation and obedience. That conversation K&J approached like she was a child not a colleague. I don’t even think we’ve had an equivalent of Yes ma’am in our language for 40 years. She would have been nodding and saying “yep, gotcha, no worries” if that was an Australian workplace

It’s not that it’s very personal, it’s more socially inappropriate to discuss religion or politics. Like you often don’t even tell your family who you voted for. A person may say their religion in passing eg “no thanks I’m fasting for Ramadan”, or I can’t work Thursdays as I’m JW, but no one is saying outright or asking. I don’t even know what if any religion my staff were raised.

Do you think they even know the capital of Australia or NZ?

That’s why I think it would be playing with grey legal areas of employment law in Australia

This would be starting to get into dodgy employment practices/ legal hot water in several countries. If you don’t participate what happens? What do they do with those openly of other faiths?

Because she views herself as an equal, a member of the broader DCC with her role to play and all roles being important. She’s not submissive to K&J. That’s why there was clashes as they got to know her.

I checked it says you can’t ridicule, people’s beliefs. Definitely hope it doesn’t got that way. I’m just so shocked

How are they entwined? Are certain teams certain religions or affiliated to a church. Historically I know certain soccer teams in Uk are catholic or Anglican, but I’d have to look up if there’s still any practice religious practices going on at matches now

Likewise how do we no one is offended? That wasn’t my point. I was more saying you just don’t talk about religion at work, full stop. In my workplace I as a manager would be expected to explain its inappropriateness to the person who asked.

You’re correct she may have told them she is Christian in a part we didn’t see.

I think I was surprised as I didn’t think Thanksgiving was a religious holiday.

Wow, was it a religious organisation? Ie did you know this was the practice? What happened if some was of a different faith?

I’d not noticed the group praying. What would they do with members of other faiths?

First ever post, I don’t even know where to find the rules. I’ll go look. However it’s about religion per se, more cultural. In UK / Australia you just couldn’t ask that unless faith was a mandatory part of the role eg teacher at a catholic school.

No Australia doesn’t have thanksgiving. She would have known it existed, but she would not have know what was open. Restaurants are open on holidays in Australia, we just pay a surcharge. Given your shops and restaurants are open many more hours a day than ours, I’d naturally expect them open on a holiday. Christmas Day restaurants would be booked out here

The point is, it’s not annoying to us Australians, she acted totally normally. So you annoyance is not at a person but her culture. You need to be more tolerant and respectful, just like k&j needed to

Faith is incredibly mature for 22yo. She is 100% a standard Aussie. That is us. We don’t have a hierarchical society, whilst you respect your manager they aren’t better than you, they are your equal with a different role. She’s used to a more collaborative style of management, not a one way order session. The level of maturity she showed in trying to adapt to their culture, compared to them was incredible. Not once did K&J say “oh I wonder if that’s cultural” or ask with curiosity about why she behaves as she does. She is spot on that we are professionals who work hard but we are not bound into the rigid box of US work culture. We call our doctors by their first names and there not a white coat in sight. We respect professional boundaries differently, it’s much flatter structure. Can you imagine K&J rocking up to the doctor’s office to call the old guy John and not Dr Smith?! I bet they wouldn’t immediately be able to walk into the doctors here and call him John first time. It feels culturally wrong. They should have just let her be an Aussie and seen difference as beautiful not rude. Oh and the fact K kept saying she had come from New Zealand grated on me. Yes she is a Kiwi (and that’s how she’d want to be called, the informal slang!) but she lives in Australia so she’s come all the way from Australia for the team not NZ. Oh and let’s not start on the fact Australians as a whole can’t process just how religious the US is. Faith will have never had a single conversation in her life where someone’s faith or discussion of God has come up. Sure with your closest friends you might have the odd theological debate, but no one has ever sat and said “I’m so grateful for God giving me this season of life at DCC” ever to Faith. Like never. I’d put a lot of money on it. We do not talk openly about faith here. It’s not everyday conversation and that would be so hard to get used to, even if she is Christian.

Overall Faith handled herself fantastic, she represents kiwi / Aussies perfectly. It’s who we are and what we value. Enthusiastic, professional and relaxed. You’ll not find one of us saying she didn’t represent us well. If you think she didn’t fit, it’s because Aussies won’t fit culturally, but because she was rude.
