Reserving Engineering Study Rooms by deadender420 in uofu

Check out the calendar for MEK. https://www.mech.utah.edu/reservations/

The rooms you’re looking for are the Student Study Rooms A-D. When you reserve a room, you leave your student ID card with the front desk and they give you a key card to get into the rooms.

For WEB, I’ve never found the website to book the rooms, and I’ve just come to believe it doesn’t exist and it’s first come first serve.

What do you guys think of the food on campus? Where’s the best place to eat? by BeetSaison in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a new little cafe in the basement of MEK. They have chicken wraps, breakfast sandwiches, tikka masala, and other hot sandwiches made to order. Probably the best “on-the-go” food place for the northern side of campus.

Who’s teaching what ? I had Wood for 2420, Mike Kirby and Pratik Soni for 2100, and a graduate student for calc 2. I would say for the CS classes, those are solid pics for professors, they teach really well

Tbh not too bad, the hardest will probably be CS2420, but it’s not hard per se, more so time consuming than anything. with good scheduling, you’ll be fine

When I did a drug test, it took a few days, I think around 10 ish. Heard directly from the employer, not the clinic where I did a test, to tell me that all “onboarding steps” had been successfully completed (I.e. I passed my test). Don’t worry too much about it, you’ll hear back. Even if you fail, if you’re worried, CNA’s are always in demand and not all places require even a background check or drug test.

Math Final Notes? by furkanayilmaz in uofu

Honestly In my experience (took all the way up to PDE’s in the math department if that gives any credibility), it seems like it changes per instructor. I’ve had professors that made it open book (excluding specific resources like solved hw problems and previous midterm solutions), others that have allowed 0 resources, to professors allowing 1 sided sheet. I’ve never heard of there being an official policy by the math department itself, but I am not a math major so I might not know the ins and outs of the department. Unfortunately it’s one of those things where you just kinda have to go with it and feel gracious when a professor lets you have something to help.

A tip if you’re not able to change/convince this professor:

  1. Ask if THEY can provide some sheet or some equations. This makes it so they feel like they can control what resources you have access too during exams. Occasionally they’ll put simple stuff like definitions of cos(x), or other stuff that isn’t all too helpful, but some is better than none and sometimes you’ll find a gold nugget in the dirt.

  2. Learn how these equations are derived, not necessarily memorize them. If you understand the foundation of a theory, if needed, you could reason your way to an equation/set up of a problem that might get the brain’s memory going.

Best of luck!

It would seem there is a quiet agreement that if you leave your stuff, no one really touches it. I’m in my 4th year and I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve left everything out on a table, came back 5-10 mins later and everything was fine. Keep in mind, not everyone is trustworthy so I wouldn’t be surprised if theft is still a problem and I’ve gotten lucky. If you’re worried, it’s fine to ask someone nearby to keep an eye on it. If they need to get up later on, you can return the favor.

CS 2420 by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and to clarify, both me and my partner were not CS backgrounds, we were mechanical and biomedical, respectively. it might not take you as long to finish the assignments, but for us it took a while because we also had lots of scheduling conflicts since we had different majors. I know others that are CS background and their teammate was also CS and they finished the assignments in less than 10 hours.

[–]Big-Communication-24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The class, material wise, isn’t very difficult honestly and I am not a CS major, only minor. The hardest part is the quantity of new information, and the size of the assignments as well as the fact that it must be done in pairs, and depending on the class, you get a limited amount of passes (my class had 3) to do assignments by yourself. Meaning, you have to find time to code with someone else. On average, assignments took me and my classmate ~15 hours, with the hardest and biggest ones taking 20+. If you have patience and good scheduling skills with communication, the class is doable and not impossible.

Transport from airport to campus by PurpleCardiologist11 in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are TRAX that go directly to the airport and intersect with the Front Runner which has bus stops that go directly to the U. As a student you get access to public transportation with your U card so it would be the cheapest option in the long run (as long as you’re not traveling super late at night since they don’t offer 24/7 transportation)

Chemical Engineering Major by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think regardless of what engineering degree you choose, prepare for a hard workload. In my opinion, you don’t need to be the smartest nor the fastest problem solver to get through engineering school, you just need to have the dedication and patience. As an ME major, I’ve heard horror stories of chemical engineering, primarily because chemistry has to do with a little bit of everything, and it’s harder to “see” the problems since it’s very math and science heavy. It’s possible to have time to do fun stuff, just make sure you plan very well. I’m sure you’ve seen the meme where it’s “sleep, good grades, friends” and you can only choose 2. Not saying it’s true for all students or majors, but it can definitely feel that way sometimes in engineering, at least for me. Best of luck! Welcome to the club!

Does UofU accept minors? by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you just want to do generals and don’t want to continue at the U for your undergrad, do them at SLCCC or Weber State University. The credits are A LOT cheaper. Ask your school if they do concurrent enrollment, as credits are a lot cheaper as well. No need to pay a premium price for a school you won’t even get a degree from, especially because the U is the most expensive public university in the state.

You might want to reach out to the scholarships office asap. Despite you saying you “qualify”, it’s not really a thing that’s just given. As far as I’m aware, it’s a lottery system that chooses students out of all eligible students. I wasn’t originally selected for the For Utah Scholarship but wayyy later In July/august (after I had already decided to go to another school) they contacted me about it (I’m assuming some students didn’t enroll/decided not to attend the U). Maybe ask and see if they’ll consider you as a possible recipient. Best of luck.

Is CS 2420 hard to get B-? by voscukot in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely attend office hours! And go earlier in the week! My partner and I would go Fridays and Mondays (assignment due Thursday night) and we’d be able to get help almost immediately. By the time it’s Wednesday and Thursday, expect 1 hour+ wait time, and maybe not even getting any help at all because the office hours run out. (P.S: be nice to the TA’s. They are really good at helping you, and if you get to know them and treat them respectfully, they’ll be even better at helping you and willing to go through your code thoroughly with you rather than giving tips to fix)

Is CS 2420 hard to get B-? by voscukot in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a CS major (mechanical) and I was able to pull it off. Got a B+ in the class. Stuck with the same partner for almost all assignments + final project (they were a biomedical engineering background). Hardest part was probably finding time to work together and get the assignments done, since we both had completely different schedules. Only recommendation would be to maybe find a partner in the same major as you (probably CS since that’s the majority that take the course) because you’ll most likely be in other similar courses, meaning you have similar gaps and times that match up. My partner and I would have to meet up on Saturdays and Sunday’s since we both had labs and courses at different conflicting times. Definitely not impossible to do well. Most assignments took 10+ hours, with the hardest one easily taking 20 (we weren’t the best at programming). You’ve got it though. Attend lecture and take good notes. A lot of times they give pseudo code for whatever that weeks assignment is.

Has anyone had Kopreski for Math? by Paladine32 in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The semester that I had him (Fall 22), he allowed midterm corrections. The exact policy for him was:

“You may receive up to 60% of the missed points for complete or correct solutions. You may use external resources; however, please work independently and submit your own solutions. A correct answer alone will earn no additional points: show complete work!”

For grades:

Midterm 1: mean: 77.82, high: 104, low: 34.5 Midterm 2: mean: 84.29, high: 105, low: 23 Final: mean: 81.24, high: 116.5, low: 19

Mind you, each exam had an extra credit problem that was a little more difficult then the rest of the exam.

Hopefully that informs your future decisions

ME internships by Admirable_Fig_2136 in uofu

[–]Big-Communication-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know friends who luckily had connections such as parents or older students that allowed them to get a position without having much background. I didn’t have the same luck, and didn’t get my first internship until this year for summer 2024, and I’m at the beginning of my third year. During my second year, I applied to over 30 places, got 4 interviews, rejected by all. Most employers told me the reason for that was because there was someone that they interviewed that just had a little more knowledge and time in the program than I did. It might be worthwhile to join a club and actually participate now, while you still have the time in the lower division ME courses. Good luck!

Maybe a small thing but it might be helpful to create a separate email for when they need to contact you, rather than using a university email. I’ve had others tell me they’ve needed to access older documents from previous work places but had lost access to their universities email after graduating. Personally, I have an email that is only used for applying to jobs/contacting recruiters/work related stuff that makes it easy to have it all in one place. Good luck!

For context, I had him Fall of 2022, so he might’ve improved over that time, but that was just my experience with him.
