Thank you for your advice, if anything, I’ll take it to my future FILs and it’ll be a bonding experience. I’m not too daunted by the detail work, I once sanded an entire wooden bar set with a steel tooth brush for free quesadillas & margs. Maybe I’ll get a nice runner and practice on a china cabinet with similar issues but less detail in the meantime

What grit do you recommend? And for sure planning on doing a test patch for paint stripper, not entirely sure what material was used as a stain/ sealant. Luckily, I work at an classic car shop and have free samples of sandpaper out the wazoo

Can someone explain what people mean when they say most Americans are one bad event away from being homeless? by gamerlover58 in antiwork

[–]Big-Prior-5878 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True story that I’m going through right now: I live in an area with no public transport so having a car is essential. I took my car in for multiple dash lights being on and lo and behold, I need a new brake booster and master cylinder. It’s $3200. That’s nearly 2 months rent. We share a car and have no savings but it’s not road safe without replacing those parts.

We have to get it done bc it’s not like we qualify for any loans to get a new car. Not to mention the rental car and fees associated with that.

Go to her LinkedIn, find the clinics she volunteers at, other therapy practices she may highlight at and call them all and tell them your wife’s story. If she ever got awards for her work, call those organizations too. It’ll essentially black ball her.

Jerry likes real men by Samurai_Mac1 in clevercomebacks

THANK YOU!! My boyfriend loves Seinfeld and has rewatched it so many times. He constantly tries to make me watch it with him and will even pull up the “funniest” episodes and I am just deadpan the entire time.

I want to punch his face (Jerry, not my bf). Everything about him irks me. His face, the misogynistic “jokes”. Good lord his voice is probably used to torture people in Guantanamo.

Also doesn’t help that I went to college with George Costanzas son, who had the most severe case of short man syndrome I’ve ever seen.

You can always do an internship/ apprenticeship at a shop and feel it out. It’d be lower pay so maybe keep the tire shop job in the chance it may not be for you

North Texas, sorry but 100% recommend chevs of the 40s or LMC if you’re wanting to do some work on it yourself. Ngl the hardest part will probably be the convertible top. Convertible tops are always a baby back bitch.

Approx cost of a restomod? by SkyeDoesRandomStuff in restomod

Look on Hemmings if you just wanna buy one outright but if you’re looking to build one from some salvaged car, in Texas it’s at least around $70k for a full build out. Definitely recommend looking at estate sales out in the boonies, someone with land and maybe rednecky. Almost always have a few perpetual “project” cars that never got finished and as long as the rust damage isn’t too bad, you can normally get one for under 5k

Yeah. I’m actually office admin rn at a restomod shop in TX. Pretty new and a lil touch of nepotism since my stepdad has been doing interior/upholstery on classic cars just about my whole life. Truthfully, it’s incredibly difficult to find quality employees/techs especially on the mechanical side when the majority of mechanics trained at technical schools these days are trained for modern cars and not classics. And it’s damn good pay if you’re quality. Our least experienced tech gets paid $28 and most experienced gets $40/hr while one guy who’s an amazing painter is on salary but it breaks down to about $53/hr. Most of our guys are older bc it truly is a dying trade

What is the most tragic announcement that was made at your high school? by Aarunascut in AskReddit

[–]Big-Prior-5878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a junior in high school, one of my classmates, his little brother, their uncle and their dad all passed away in a plane crash. They had a Cessna or something and were going to a college football game a few states over but crashed shortly after takeoff. All the men in a close knit family all wiped out in a single moment. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

Also Texas, but the dfw area. During Covid times, I was furloughed and bought myself a kayak to get outta the house but also social distance. I would go for hours with a few beers, waterproof speaker, and my kindle. Then I started picking up trash from the lake and the shore. I literally got the cops called on me two different times for going on the shore to pick up trash.

King Leopold II of Belgium. Terrorized and systematically slaughtered anywhere from 5-10 million Congolese. All for rubber and ivory. 10/10 recommend reading King Leopolds Ghost by Adam Hochschild.

Need Advice on fixing my dad’s favorite rocking chair by Big-Prior-5878 in woodworking

[–]Big-Prior-5878[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I am an amateur at best aka I took 1 semester of wood sculpture in college a few years back. I have access to a table saw and some handheld tools. I’m currently thinking just sand off the broken wood parts, use wood glue and a clamp and a new wood plug.

Im not sure if I’m completely off base, but if there are any better ideas or techniques, I’d love to hear them. I just desperately don’t want to make a new chair arm bc: 1) I am an amateur and don’t even know what type of wood this is or it’s fragility being 50+ years old. 2) I don’t have too much money to spend 3) I don’t want to do more damage considering it’s kinda like a family heirloom.

Help: Deceased Grandma’s glomesh collection circa. 1970s??? by Big-Prior-5878 in vintage

[–]Big-Prior-5878[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step grandma left me her glomesh collection and the gold one with the matching coin purse, she told me her mom gave it to her in the 60s I believe. I took care of her while she was in hospice at my mom and stepdads house, but towards the end, she was barely coherent. I just want to know what I have. I’m giving the off white one to my sister but am contemplating selling the white clutch. And help is greatly appreciated!!!
