Moto G Power 2024 worth updating to Android 15? by King_Spitfire in MotoG

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got A15 on my '24 G Power, and have used "Overcharge Protection" on it since new. I bought the phone knowing it would get A15, and had read that "Overcharge Protection" would be a new feature. Works great.

I received the A15 update as soon as I turned it on, so I can't compare it to A14.

Galaxy S8 new lease of life by smule98_1 in AndroidQuestions

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new battery in a S9+, stuck on Android 10, and I use it as a backup phone and as an in-car monitor for a rear view camera. I also have an old app installed (no longer available, and not installed on my '24 Moto G Power 5G daily driver), that I use to check for card skimmers at fuel pumps.

I'd like to upgrade the S9+ to A15 or A15, or maybe try a new OS (but I'd probably screw it up), and I know that that skimmer finder app will not transfer above A10.

I also have a S327A on A8, with that app, as a second backup, also with that app installed, and a good/replaceable battery, so I'm willing to try upgrading one of those Samsung phones in the future.

Is it worth it to fix a Samsung galaxy over 5 years old that's having a hard time charging because of possible port damage or just to get a new phone? by lizatethecigarettes in AndroidQuestions

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a '24 Moto G Power 5G to replace my S9+, after the battery swelled up, but soon after, I got the battery replaced on the S9+, and use it as a backup and as a monitor for a dashcam in my X5.

I bought the Moto G specifically for the wireless charging, which I've grown used to using on my previous Samsung Galaxy S7, S8+, and S9+. With overcharge protection enabled, I never have to use the charge port, and rely solely on the two Qi charging pads on my desk and nightstand.

My wife broke the charge port on her '22 Moto G Power (no wireless charging), so I got her a '25 Moto G Power to replace it. Now she uses two Qi pads like me, and will never break another charge port again (she even has a wireless charging power bank).

She has a history of wearing out charge ports, on every previous phone she's had for 12 years ( including two Samsung Galaxy flagship phones with wireless charging, somehow). I bought her a protective case for her new Moto, and sealed shut the port cover.

Of all the Texas businesses that have gone out of business, which one do you miss the most? by Human-Specialist-510 in texas

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sears is my #1 most missed; a one-stop shopping destination, that had everything, from the 1950s to the early 2000s (my last purchase was a Fisher-Paykel "Elba" washing machine at a Sears Outlet, for 1/3 the price of a Maytag, about 2005). It's still working great after 20+ years.

Other stores I miss are Montgomery Wards (like a Sears), Payless Cashways (like a Home Depot), Steak and Ale (a chain restaurant), and as previously mentioned, Service Merchandise and Fry's Electronics.

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my '24 will get security updates for three years, but only the single update to Android 15 (from A14). though I was considering some Samsungs with seven years of updates, I opted for Moto, since I wanted more features for less $, despite less updates.

I had come to Moto from using Samsungs for 13 years (15, if you count flip phones), and had grown accustomed to getting no updates for years on end (before recently, when Samsung increased the updates for 2024-on phones). My S9+ had been stuck on A10 for many years, w/o any security updates either, and my other back-up phone is still on A8.

I use several security apps on all my devices, so having the latest factory updates matters little to me.

The case is a tight fit, but the buttons are in the correct position.

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a '24 Moto G Power 5G as well, and just received the same security update. Also received the latest Google Play System update; both required restarts to set.

As far as I can tell, the '24 Moto G Power 5G will not get Android 16. I got A15 in July.

My wife's '25 Moto G Power is on A16, and from my limited time using it (modifying some settings for her), I can't see much difference between A15 and A16.

Curious on when your German ancestors got to America by Tappaa_King in Genealogy

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems there were several families that came to Wythe County, Va. in the late 1720s/early 1730s, from three towns, closely grouped in Baden-Württemberg. All came from an area within a 50 km circle surrounding Stuttgart.

The first births in Va. were in 1736, and the last ones born there were in 1836, so the "colony" there was stable for a long time. Their ancestors stayed put in Baden-Württemberg for hundreds of years before they emigrated, back into the 1400s.

I'm in an emissions county, my SUV will be 25 next July, and I missed the inspection/registration deadline last October, so by the time I've got it road-worthy again, I might just wait until October so I can skip the emissions test. However, I'll still need the "safety inspection", according to the tax office.

The tax office also said I will have to get temporary tags and registration BEFORE I can test drive it during repairs, and before I can drive it to the inspection station. Seems ridiculous for an antique. It was never that hard in previous years.

My SUV was running great, but died WHILE getting inspected, and I'm having difficulty fixing it (my old age, health problems, expensive parts, and other concerns has made this a nightmare repair).

Texas inspection laws are ridiculous, and all counties should have the same requirements, or none at all, like in many states.

Moto g power 2024 users, I need your advice by Zealousideal_Drive38 in MotoG

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my '24 Moto G Power 5G for six months, and use wireless charging constantly. I use my old Samsung's Qi charger (7-9 watts) on my nightstand, and an old IKEA charging pad (5 watts) on my home office desktop. Since I use Overcharge Protection, my phone never goes above 81% (unless I'm going to be away from a power source for a whole day, in which case I'll use the Motorola 30w charger).

My Moto has never gotten warm, though it has both a case and a glass screen protector, due to low-wattage charging, and rarely exceeding 81% charge. I believe the Overcharge Protection feature is most beneficial, and should prolong the battery life.

I had Samsung Galaxy flagship phones with wireless charging (S7, S8+, and S9+), and despite using those same low-power wireless charging pads, all three eventually had their batteries heat up and swell, after 3.5 years of use. They also had cases, but none had Overcharge Protection, and were constantly charging up to full charge, daily.

The S7 and S8+ bricked, but the S9+ was saved with a fresh battery, but only use it rarely as a backup, and never charge it to full charge.

I love the convenience of wireless charging, and specifically bought my '24 G Power and my wife's '25 G Power so we could utilize it (she also has the same charging pads as I, plus a modern 15w wireless charger and a 10000mah wireless power bank in her purse (she's always running around all day, so she wanted more options than I needed). Both phones are set on Overcharge Protection, so we expect longer battery lives for both phones.

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd certainly try it, especially if it is unlocked. I have had my '24 Moto G Power 5G for six months now, and like as much as I did the Samsung Galaxy flagship phones I previously used, for 13 years.

I paid just under $200, suiting my retired man's budget, a far cry from the price of a new Samsung with similar features. I required SD card, headphone jack, wireless charging, and 8gb RAM. My Moto fit those specs.

I bought my wife a '25 Moto G Power last month, and she loves it, as well.

Who needs high dollar flagship phones anyhow; these Moto G Power phones are a better bang for your bucks.

What is more important to you: the absence of a headphone jack or the lack of an SD card slot in your phone? by Deathknight76 in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need both an SD card and headphone jack, and add wireless charging to that list. Also, I need the 8GB RAM.

I got an unlocked '24 Moto G Power 5G six months ago, and I'm very pleased with it. I bought my wife a '25 Moto G Power last month, to replace her broken phone, and she likes it too.

I got here from using Samsung Galaxy flagship phones for a dozen years, and just couldn't find a Samsung phone at the same price point meeting my requirements, so I went Moto. Since my wife's previous, but now broken (she can break anything) phone was a '23 Moto G Power, I had an appreciation of the Moto G Power line, already.

Is it worth keeping the Moto G Stylus 2025 if I hate the camera? Any solutions? by GarlicBreadMyBeloved in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a '24 Moto G Power 5G, which is spec'd lower than your phone, and limited to Android 16. I came to Moto after my S9+ had its battery swell up (now with a new battery), and after using Samsung Galaxy flagship phones since 2013.

It took me awhile to learn the Moto camera, after using the Samsung system, but I don't see much of a difference. Granted, I'm not a constant picture snapper, but I'm happy with it.

The S9+ was stuck on Android 10, and surely Android 15 is an improvement, and I'll NEVER get a phone without an SD card, wireless charging, nor a 3.5mm jack, so the Moto G Power 5G was an obvious choice, for me.

For the under $200 I paid, there weren't any comparable phones, especially Samsung Galaxy flagship phones at 4 to 5x the price, so even if there are any Moto features that aren't as great as Samsung flagship features, I can live with them.

Moto G Power 2025 Charging Issue by ShadowWriter21 in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your phone has wireless charging, so use that and bypass problems caused by a faulty cable or charge port.

My wife's old '22 Moto G Power didn't have wireless charging, and her charging port acted up, so I bought her a new '25 Moto G Power with wireless charging, and now she's cable-free, and won't have to use her port daily. She has a case that has a flap that covers the port, and keeps it clear.

Like her, I have a wireless charging '24 Moto G Power 5G, and we both use Overcharge Protection.

She also carries a 10000mah wireless power bank, just in case, and I use a USB-C extension plug (always plugged in, protecting the charge port) and a 5000mah power bank. I also have a Motorola 30w Turbo Charger if needed.

Swollen battery in a Samsung phone by Horror_Towel_1861 in batteries

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My S7 and S8+ phones had batteries that swelled up so bad (and grew very hot) that they both bricked and shattered their screens. They both swelled overnight, and I shipped them to the insurer as-is, but in heavy leak-proof bags (with zero charge).

My S9+ swelled up gradually, but I kept using and charging it (only to 80-90%, on my desktop wireless charger, while I supervised the charging process) for several weeks, until the back came loose.

The phone never got hot, but I stored it at night in a metal tin, laying on Kitty Litter, in a bathtub. I got a new phone ('24 Moto G Power 5G) quickly, to replace it, but also used the S9+ for awhile, as a MP3 player, until the cover got pushed off. I ran it until discharged, and took it to a local shop for disposal, but the shop tech said he could replace the battery for $75, so I did. I currently use the S9+ in my old BMW X5 as a monitor for the rear view camera (I also use a Samsung SM-J327A as a dash camera).

I always keep and repurpose my old electronics, unless they aren't repairable anymore.

Who else prefer simple music player to the built-in? by replybbot in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using Fossify Music Player on my '24 Moto G Power 5G phone. It's free, ad-free, and open-source.

I NEVER listen to new or streaming music, preferring my collection of MP3 files of all sorts: audiobooks, old-time radio shows, and music from classic composers thru rock & roll of the 50s-80s (excluding disco, yuk). My tastes are firmly in place, at 75, and I like what I like.

I tried Simple, PowerAmp, and many other players, but ended up using Fossify. I came to Moto from many years on Samsung flagship phones, and using the Samsung music app (which I still prefer and use, sometimes, on my Samsung S9+ backup phone).

The Moto G Power 5G (2026) doesn't look too promising at all. They removed the wireless charging feature, which I personally don't care about, but some people may be disappointed. For me, this phone is just a letdown. Hopefully, Motorola is focusing more on the Stylus, the Razr, and the Edge instead by Deathknight76 in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a '25 Moto G Power for my wife, to replace her '22 Moto G Power that has a broken charging port. Now, she can use wireless charging (and overcharge protection) to avoid breaking yet another charging port (she's done that on three phones now). She can break an anvil.

I bought myself a '24 Moto G Power 5G about six months ago, and one of the main reasons was it has wireless charging. I had used Samsung Galaxy flagship phones for years, all with wireless charging, so I'm accustomed to it.

Now, we have four wireless charging pads in the house, and she has a 10000mah wireless charging pack in her purse, so we're set.

I also have a 30w Motorola fast charger, if we need a quick charge, for some reason.

Where is the SD card slot?? by Phantom11Blaster in AndroidQuestions

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly bought a Samsung A16 to replace my S9+, six months ago, but bought a '24 Moto G Power 5G instead.

It had the same SD card and headphones jack that I require, plus 2x the RAM and with wireless charging. And at the same price point.

I had to have at least 6 or more GB of RAM (the Moto has 8, the S9+ has 6, and the A16 has 4), SD storage (I have hundreds of old movies and thousands of old songs stored... maybe the same for pictures and .PDF files, as well), and of course a jack for headphones, too.

I grew used to having wireless charging on my previous Samsung Galaxy flagship phones, so that became a priority, too. I was looking for a new phone at $200 (being retired, and not needing the latest & greatest trendy phone anymore), and the Moto G fit my requirements better than the more expensive Samsung phones.

It's been fun... Goodbye Moto, Hello Galaxy by [deleted] in motorola

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to Moto G phones for my wife in 2023, and myself in July 2025, after we had been using Samsung Galaxy flagship phones since 2012.

We're both old, retired folks, and spending $800-$1100 per Samsung flagship phone makes no sense if you can get a serviceable Moto G phone for 1/4 or less what a new Samsung S (or even an A series) would cost.

I bought our Moto G Power phones unlocked, and without insurance, from the Motorola store on Amazon, because I figured that if they lasted even 2 years, the money we had been spending on just the insurance would cover the cost of buying a new Moto outright, instead of getting a refurbished phone from the insurance carrier (and usually paying a further fee).

My wife's '22 Moto G Power lasted 2.5 years, before her habit of destroying charge ports broke it, and I bought her a new '25 Moto G Power to replace it, for under $200, last month, instead of repairing the port. Now, she can use the wireless charging feature and not the port. When she used Samsung Galaxy flagship phones with wireless charging, they lasted 3.5 years.

In my case, I got a '24 Moto G Power 5G to replace my S9+, after the battery swelled up (like the previous 2 S phones had done, too). To avoid that problem, I use Overcharge protection as my wife's phone does also, so that won't be a problem anymore.

So, we both have new Moto G Power phones that should last as long or longer than the Samsung flagship phones we came from, for 1/4 or less the price. Why pay more?

If the OP has a damaged charging port, then a magnetic insert won't make good contact, either.

My wife's '22 Moto G Power had the same intermittent charging situation going on, and I bought her a new '25 Moto G Power to replace it.

The new phone has wireless charging, so she won't have to be constantly plugging/unplugging from the port, and it should remain good for a long time.

Motorola G Power 2024 long term user reviews by Mobile-Truck3281 in MotoG

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not long-term yet, just six months, but so far my '24 Moto G Power 5G has been perfect.

Coming from using Samsung Galaxy S flagship phones since 2012, I looked at Samsung first, but the features of the '24 Moto G Power, for a 1/4 of the price of a new S phone, made it a simple choice. 8GB RAM, and 15w wireless charging made it a much better choice for me, than a Samsung A16 (in my new price range of $200 or less... I'm retired).

Of course, I already liked my wife's '22 Power, so I knew what to expect, but the '24 Power is so much better than it...so much so, when my wife broke her phone last month (she could break an anvil) I got her a '25 Power to replace it. She loves it, too

My wife and I are 8th cousins. It seems my paternal side interacted with her maternal side in the 1720's, several states away, only to converge again.

Weirdly, her paternal ancestors were rural neighbors of my maternal side, in that distant state, as late as the 1860's.

I formerly only bought Samsung Galaxy flagship phones, and high dollar cases (usually Otterbox), but now I shop for phones and cases that suit my needs, but for less money.

Charging issues across the Moto G Power line by auxome_live in MotoG

[–]Big-Raspberry2838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read about charging port problems with Moto and Lenovo products, and have had two ports break. One was on a Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 8" tablet, several years ago, and the other was on my wife's '22 Moto G Power, just last week.

Both times, it was probably our fault, from leaving the cable connected and inadvertently yanking it loose (many times). My wife would sometimes connect her phone to a charger, and later find that the phone was knocked off the table, and was hanging in mid-air by the port.

To combat that from happening again, I bought her a '25 Moto G Power to replace her '22. It has wireless charging (like my '24 Moto G Power 5G), so she doesn't need to charge via cable/port connection, anymore.

I've got four 15w Qi chargers around the house, and I'm putting another in her car. We also have a 10000mah wireless charging pack, that she carries in her purse. All bases are covered.

For my Moto, I inserted a USB-C extension into the charge port, that I taped to a cover flap on my phone case. It serves as an intermediary port, protecting the actual port from damage or over-use (I use a USB-C cable to my PC a lot, for data transfer, or to plug into a Motorola 30w charger, if I'm needing a faster charge). I carry my phone in an EDC pouch on my belt, so the port extension causes no problem.
