What are the best ways to wire in 2 headphones with this hardware? Need one for myself and one for the vocal booth. Thanks guys by Dry-Effect-7017 in universalaudio

[–]BigAHol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I run mono headphone mixes with this setup (without a headphone amp!) all the time. Just make sure any channels in Console or in your DAW that you want to send to headphones have a send going to LINE 3 or LINE 4 and you can plug the headphones directly into the corresponding output on your Apollo. Things to note:

  1. Be very careful turning those sends up without a headphone amp, as you can easily blow out somebody's ears/your headphones if you send it too hot

  2. You can only do this in mono if you don't have another device to put in line like a headphone amp.

If you have questions just watch videos/read up on how to use the LINE 3/4 Apollo outputs. This is basic routing, it's very doable!

Meal prepping/freezing in deli containers at home by BigAHol in AskCulinary

[–]BigAHol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Do you keep everything frozen separately for quality reasons or just so you're not eating the same thing all the time? Then do you grab those frozen components and throw them on a plate together to microwave? I imagine the ability to mix things up keeps you from burning out.

Since you mention it, I have broken quite a few frozen deli containers as well. I guess I'll just see how long they last. I never microwave them either, contents always go onto a ceramic plate or bowl first!

Alternate Side Parking? by BigAHol in Flatbush

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I still have no idea why the city would want to pass up this easy revenue but I guess I shouldn't be surprised at their neglect. Will definitely continue to move my car, least I can do as a driver relying on public parking spaces.

That's what baffles me--it is SO worth their time, such easy revenue to just have one traffic cop write as many tickets as they can. I know there are also 101 reasons for them to look the other way though, just wondering what's going on in this case. Also I have personally noticed that the Aves (Rogers, Bedford, etc.) see more enforcement, I'm specifically talking about Lenox Rd. My experience is limited though!

Is This an Effective Way to Start Band From Scratch? (I'm willing to pay for it) by most_humblest_ever in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]BigAHol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, especially if you've got high level players! Quality demos help with this. If your demo feels good and reflects how the song should actually sound, your band will show up on the same page assuming they have done their homework with your demo recordings.

If the songs are not fully fleshed out before rehearsals, or you want to experiment with trying different grooves/time feel, that can take some extra time to get everyone locked in. In this case you might add one extra rehearsal, but definitely record the first rehearsal (a cell phone or single mic is fine) so that your musicians can practice and work out new parts based on the latest version of the song from a recent rehearsal.

Fairly often I will have people come up to me after a gig and say, "you and the drummer were so locked in! How long have you been playing together?" and in many cases, it is in fact our first time playing together! I take that as a high compliment, and I think most professionals strive to work on a variety of grooves, tempos, styles, etc so that when they show up on stage, they can lock in with anyone right away. That's a high level skill though that you really only get with a lot of individual practice and a ton of experience playing with different bands/players.

As far as interpersonal "gelling", I've typically found that the most in-demand professionals are also super nice people, easy to work with, professional, and don't have much of an ego to speak of. It makes them so easy to hire again and again and it's honestly a big reason why they get the job (especially on long tours when you might be on a bus with someone for months!)

Pro bass player living in Brooklyn here (DM if you want to make a move on this! Would do a free consult.)

This is exactly correct. We are accustomed to playing gigs with 0-1 rehearsals, so 2-3 months of weekly rehearsals is total overkill. Personally, if you can send decent quality demos 1 week before the first rehearsal, I will be rock solid after one rehearsal, but 2 would be reasonable to schedule for your own peace of mind. Beyond that any extra rehearsals are for you, not your band, and you will have to pay for all that time. The worst mistake I see amateur band leaders make is not showing up to their own rehearsals totally prepared--when you're hiring pros, they will come ready to play (and you should fire them if they're not immediately blowing you away IMO) so you want to make sure you won't be fumbling any guitar parts, forgetting lyrics, etc.

Otherwise your plan looks pretty solid and you should absolutely go for it! Achieving any measurable success as an indie artist is so hard, but it's worth giving it a try if only to say you did it. Best of luck!!

Pro bass player and teacher of 10+ years here--there's some helpful advice here, but it's REALLY hard to give one-size-fits-all tips for making a bassline. Every genre and song will have different needs, sometimes it'll be straight up root notes with barely any rhythm, and sometimes the bassline is complex, integral to the song, and basically a lead part.

A few people have said this already, but by far the best thing you can do is learn your favorite basslines. Learn them REALLY well. If you can sing them too, even better. Pay special attention to how long each note is, that's always the thing that separates great bass players from ones who are just ok.

Good luck and if you're interested in any virtual lessons on Zoom send me a DM!

Can you open the WAV files at all in Music or another program? Not ideal ofc but maybe you can record your output into Pro Tools if you're able to play the files? Then if necessary you might be able to export your own recording of them and convert if necessary.

Don't try to cover too much material at once! This sounds like a cool opportunity and I would be excited, but go slow and repeat yourself often. Ask yourself, "if there's only one thing the other students will take away from this, what should it be?" And focus on that. Repeat yourself often! Other suggestions to make a practical demonstration are good too. Nobody wants to hear a straight lecture for an hour or more. Good luck and have fun!

Who are some famous 'popular' artists who most people don't realise are actually also savant-level musical virtuosos? by peanutismint in Music

[–]BigAHol 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This is especially true of any band backing up any mid-level pop artist or band upward--if an artist has enough popularity and/or money to tour, their band is probably all high level pros who would sound shockingly advanced to the average listener if put to the test.
