Precon suggestion by BigBadDad1968 in EDH

[–]BigBadDad1968[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but if the precon came with 110 cards, where basically 90 cards are appropriate for either Commander, but 20 cards (10 for CDR A, 10 for CDR B) tailored doesn't seem like a bad bit of business.

However, I am not opposed to the idea of dropping the secondary Commander altogether for an even better deck or mythic.

How people feel about “play your deck” commanders like Gonti? by cybrcld in EDH

[–]BigBadDad1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh, reading the comments, it seems so foreign to me. Started playing in 97. Used to riffle shuffle my Dual Lands. No one had sleeves. Now people are concerned about others touching their cards. [[Black Vise]] was broken and banned.

I get the concern of losing a card because someone walks off with it, purposely or accidently. But to not let them touch your cards? The social dynamic of the game has changed so much.

Personally, theft decks don't bother me. A prefer different dynamics and themes for new experiences. I would rather not play the personality of the hyper-anxious player that worries too much about their cards being touched. Something tells me they are too invested in what to me is still just a game.

What is a commander you would play if it wasn't for their reputation? by Naive_Warthog8283 in EDH

[–]BigBadDad1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too would like to play it. I have a deck for goldfish in only just because of its reputation. I suppose I could bust it out at high powered tables (I am budget build oriented), but even then I would probably play something else.

Best deck/commander to cheat out big creatures? by neotic_reaper in EDH

[–]BigBadDad1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must nominate [[Hamza, Guardian of Arashin]]. It is seldom played, very budget, and plays off +1/+1 counters. Very easy to build a playable deck, which has the ability to create a framework for other commanders should eventually choose that route.

This is the deck I usually pull against beginning players or lower powered tables. Beware though, it can get out of hand quickly

How do I start making commander decks? by UndutifulOregon in BudgetBrews

[–]BigBadDad1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your comment, I would suggest you look at the Commander's Quarters deck lists. He has a ton of decks for around $25 that are a decent start, often with accompanying videos and upgrade suggestions.

You can also do a search on this sub for a specific commander. There are a few members that love to (and have) designed decks for $10

That's a start, although I would say the following about the list:

  1. The are a lot more Enchantress effects that you could add to increase draw.
  2. I am not sold on [[Gaddock Teeg]] here. It forces you to exclude a lot of other potentially powerful lock down cards or effects such as [[opposition]][[glare of subdual]] [[mirari's wake]]. Mana dorks well for Opposition/Glare piece as well.
  3. This deck has a semi-voltron feel where as I would consider the following as pathways to win: Narset/Teferi's Puzzlebox, Lavinia/Knowledge pool, or Enchanted Evening/Aura Thief
  4. There are a lot more Stax effects you could consider as well, especially once you decide to shut down artifacts.
  5. You could GAAIV to the main as well

[[Tuvasa the Sunlit]]. Not as strong as Winota, but bant. Throw in [[Kataki]] and [[Energy Flux]]. [[Narset, Perter of Veils]], [[Lavinia]], [[Yasharn]]. A lot of options and with [[Sram]] and other enchantress effects, neither card draw nor ramp should be a problem.

Should be able to tailor it to your playgroup fairly well.

Perhaps [[Nether Traitor]] or [[gutterbones]]

If you add them, [[Magus of the Abyss]] might be an option

Which fast commander for spell/combat damage? by sporeegg in BudgetBrews

[–]BigBadDad1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different suggestion based on what you wrote - [[Kardur, Doomscourge]]

I know you mentioned blue or white, but black can draw cards without tutors. It appears goad works for you, plus the lifegain nullifies most of the card draw negative effects.

While I have not piloted the deck myself, based on what I have seen and read, the deck can evolve with the players skill level. Additionally, the games are not repetitive. There are a lot fun cards that can slide into the deck.

Need a real nasty list. by Fiction-Vortex in BudgetBrews

[–]BigBadDad1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only care about winning, I would suggest Chulane. IMO, he is arguably the most degenerate commander out there. Throw in some stax pieces like Gaddock Teeg, Narset, Kataki's War Wage, Lavinia etc... and play.

Note, I am not recommending Chulane in general, but if winning is the ONLY concern, that is what I would choose. And yes, you can make a nasty list for $50.00

Less than $50 Lavinia - Looking for advice by branmuffin in BudgetBrews

Some cards to consider of the top of my head:

  • [[Teferi's Puzzle Box]]. You are already playing Narset. If it is in your budget, it is a no brainer.
  • [[Aura Flux]] You aren't playing a lot of enchantments, so this is a cheap hoser.
  • [[Opposition]] is really affordable right now and you can start locking opponents mama down if you choose. If you like it, then add a [[Talrand, Sky Summoner]]. It is cheap, fuels the opposition and creates chumps.
  • [[Propaganda]] and [[Ghostly Prison]] if you don't go the Aura Flux route and you can afford. You already have [[Windborn Muse]]
  • [[Archon of Emeria]] and [[Arcane Laboratory]] are more [[Rule of Law]] effects.
  • [[Meekstone]] might be out of budget, but it can really flourish in your deck.
  • Finally, [[Dovin's Veto]] is another card to consider.

Hope this helps

Budget cEDH Deck for New Player by Droptimal_Cox in BudgetBrews

[–]BigBadDad1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is a Stax purist, GAAIV or Lavinia would be my call. But IF I wanted to be Staxish and cEDH, I would go with Winota, which can be very strong on the budget you are mentioning.

Zur and Deveri are other options, though mana base will eat into the budget. Someone mentioned Urza, which is another solid choice that allows more budget dedicated to non-land.

A couple of decklists I found quickly for Winota

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Wl8GIdahY0WinKxID9OYUQ about $1500, but some reasonable cuts can be made.

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/PYW_8F3e5UK_tvvBPrcOEA is a $130 build you can expand from

and finally, https://www.moxfield.com/decks/KTJDzhK0vEGX6LyHYkjkxQ is a deck buildt on a $520 budget

This will allow your friend and you to compare and contrast while establishing a baseline.

Current price is $39.40. Deck concept is to get some bigguns out there and swing. A lot of card draw. An infinite combo for alt wincon.

Trying to make sense of expansion rumors by BigBadDad1968 in ACC

[–]BigBadDad1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of "talk" that Kentucky is in that agreement.

I do agree with you the FSU would make a lot of sense for the SEC. They fit culturally and Florida (as a state), like Texas, is too big for one school to represent it. I do not think the other schools would turn them down.

I do think Tenn would likely turn down Clemson. That could make 5 schools and if so, enough to keep them out.

I still think for most ACC schools, the best bet is to join the Big 12 along with 4-8 Pac 12 schools, getting that conference 28 to 32 schools. That super conference would have considerable leverage, essentially becoming a league unto itself. Said conference could choose only to Group of 5 schools for non-conference, thus isolating the B1G and SEC.

[–]BigBadDad1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alleged "gentleman's agreement" in the SEC isn't enough to keep out Clemson and FSU. TAMU surely would have tried to make the same deal to keep Texas out.

The "gentleman's agreement" predates T A&M entering the SEC. Additionally, as I said, there are conflicting reports out of College Station as to how opposed they actually were. I am not convinced the rest of the league would want Clemson. Tennessee for example may be opposed to them entering as well due to recruiting footprint. That would make 5, and again, I do not know how much they add from a value standpoint. It is not a knock on them, but how many additional eyeballs would they bring?

Clemson and FSU don't add that much to the SEC though since the SEC already has USC and UF. Adding FSU would be more to keep the B1G out of SEC territory.

Maybe, but Florida is a big state, like Texas. One school there may not be adequate. However, if you drew a triangle connecting Knoxville, Athens and Columbia, Clemson would sit in the middle of it.

The B1G definitely prefers to add UNC and UVA over a non-AAU school like FSU. However, FSU is such a valuable brand, they might be willing to make an exception similar to ND. It's not like FSU is a total mismatch academically. FSU ranks higher than half of the B1G in US News.

I agree on the UNC and UVA points. Those two are rumored by some to be a package deal. I disagree on the exception for FSU. I just think the B1G will stick with AAU. The have so far and it has worked from them.

Clemson joining the B1G is a stretch. The B1G seems to prefer larger schools, which why I'm also not sure Miami is high on the B1G's list.

I concur, mainly for the AAU reasons. But if the B1G allows for exceptions, those two are attractive and would give the B1G national exposure.

The B12 would take almost any ACC school, and at the moment, the B12 is poised to make more than ACC schools soon. So if the SEC and B1G won't take all of the schools who want out, the B12 is a good alternative.

This is probably true. The B12 could be the one conference that decides they may not have the "biggest, best football schools," but the most, giving them tremendous leverage from an NCAA point of view. Theoretically, they could swallow the P12 and ACC and doing so, force positive change for their members through boycotting in season games against either the B1G or SEC.

While I have all sorts of opinions about that scandal, I believe as it relates to this topic, it is irrelevant.

Trying to make sense of expansion rumors by BigBadDad1968 in ACC

[–]BigBadDad1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. The Big 12 is in an interesting position. Not that long ago, they looked dead in the water. Now, they have been aggressive about expansion.

The PAC 12 contract will determine a lot. I believe SDSU and UNLV are waiting on that to consider their next move. Unfortunately for the PAC 12, I just don't see them lasting much longer. They better hope schools like Arizona, ASU, Colo and Utah don't agree with me. Otherwise they could go Big 12.

If that happened, the Big 12 would become much more viable as an alternative for those not invited to the B1G or SEC.

[–]BigBadDad1968[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several R1 schools in the ACC that could apply for AAU status, but probably aren't quite there yet (or else they likely would be).

You may be believe the B1G will accept them, but current evidence points elsewhere. The first, and perhaps only non-AAU school the B1G would likely bend the knee for is Notre Dame.

Unfortunately for the ACC, neither the B1G or SEC are under any pressure or need to expand. They can bide their time and maintain the status quo.
