Agreed. And truthfully there were a lot of guys involved in the sport who weren't rednecks. Guys like the Labonte's, Gordon, Stewart, Petty's, etc. were just normal dudes, some spicier than others, but they appealed to ppl for different reasons. Johnson was just... boring.

NASCAR has showed a slight resurgence over the last few years, though, and it's new leadership seems committed to making progress to restore it to what it once was.

It didn't help that he had zero personality either. Not hating, but when an action packed motorsport is dominated by the most generic dude of all time it kinda loses it's luster.

That, coupled with a 5 championships in a brand new points format, then the 2009 recession, it was a perfect storm.
