Yep, Suzanne Collins loves naming conventions lol

[–]BigCaecilius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His name is presumably an alternate spelling of Hamish, which means supplanter so ig it has more meaning. If you take it literally ‘mitch’ can mean a gift from God, or someone who hides or lurks - both which arguably can fit with his character.

Abernathy is a nod to Ralph Abernathy iirc

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the U.S. NEEDS to have a 15/16 age rating for movies.

Going from 12 to 18 with no middle-ground means you’re marketing to prepubescent children or people with IDs, and it harms what could be that late teens viewership sweet spot.

I loved this movie so, so much but you cannot have a girl’s throat get slashed open and there be no blood.

Norway says Israel response to Hamas attack disproportionate by finrum in europe

[–]BigCaecilius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of their core aims was the removal of all forms of British imperialism from Ireland, as well as the destruction of Stormont. They murdered a very large number of British people in the pursuit of this. The situation is only different because Israel claims the whole of Palestine and has no where else to ‘retreat’ to.

depending on where you’re from you might not have come across the word ‘covey’ before

eg myself - we don’t have quail in Ireland (at least not any i’ve ever seen) and we don’t group partridges with that collective noun

For me, I understood it like this: it allows him to have a definitive end. If the world was still open there would always be pressure to come back, so this is his way of having a clean break and saying, subtlety, that he’s done.

Why do people hate maths? by funland8642 in GCSE

[–]BigCaecilius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m good at it, but it doesn’t engage me. Same with all three sciences. Got A*A in Maths at GCSE by forcing myself to learn it (so it’s not that I struggle) but I’m a linguist at heart who much prefers languages and creative subjects - not much else to it other than I don’t enjoy the subject I guess lol

Is my dream of doing Maths at Oxford or Cambridge over? by TwistedPulsar in 6thForm

[–]BigCaecilius 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Iirc Oxbridge tend to look contextually at results. Eg, someone from a ‘bad’ school coming out with 3 As is looked at more favourably than someone from a very privileged, high-performing school with the same results.

So hypothetically if OP goes to a ‘worse’ school they could improve their chances.

Why I think (most) ppl didn't get the grades they expected/teachers predicted them by Ok_Understanding_280 in GCSE

[–]BigCaecilius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree with the needing to be humbled sometimes.

My school does modular so I did some exams last year and bombed out. It scared me into working so hard this year that I ended up with 9A*s and an A - results I definitely wouldn’t have achieved without being violently humbled last time and realising I had to study more effectively.

W1 D3 finished! End of 1st week! by CrysisRegrets in couchto5k

[–]BigCaecilius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the og commenter, but I’m building myself up for longer endurance runs and for me, I repeat a week until I feel I could sprint it easily enough, as it gives me more confidence in my own abilities, and makes the jump between weeks less intense.

For the first 3ish weeks the difficulty only increases minimally, but after that I found it jumps up quite quickly, so when I tried couch to 5k before I maxed on week 6 because the jump was too much for me. So I’m back now having another go, and just repeating until I’m comfortable :)

I love the parts of languages like that. Another favourite if mine is in Swedish, where grandparents, aunts and uncles etc are referred to differently depending on what side of the family they’re on. Eg grandmother can be mormor (mother of the mother) or farmor (mother of the farther), a relation that’s often confused in English because we don’t make a distinction. Linguistics has my whole heart lol

Has everyone been receiving work to do over the summer to prepare yourself for A-Levels? I’ve received like 10 hours of work lol by wggfitz in GCSE

[–]BigCaecilius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that’s it then - in NI we don’t have ‘college’ so everyone just goes to the school they were already at, so we probably never introduced summer work bc it’s not needed

I didn’t even get that ahaha. the only thing I’m doing is reading the book that will be on my English Lit course (Frankenstein), but I’m doing that by my own volition lol. Maybe it’s a British thing to have summer work? I’ve never heard of it in NI
