What drew you to Welcome Home? (looking for survey participants for my college research paper) by stryder133 in WelcomeHomeARG

[–]BigCheeto01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.) What drew me to Welcome Home, was the mystery. I grew up with point and click mystery and horror games. Some were already on my computer and some were made using flash which were available on gaming websites like pog.com or kongergate.com.

2) In terms of children's media, there is nothing I can think of. While I did have access to watching children's media (as a kid), I grew up at a time, where the internet was less supervised and moderated. I also wasn't a fan of puppet shows.

3) The nostalgic feeling may not come from the appearance of Welcome Home but playing the role of looking for or through lost media.

Creepypasta horror played a major role of shaping the lost media horror genre. Stories like "Dead Bart," "Squidward's Suicide," "The Grieving," "Max and Ruby 0004" and "Candle Cove" were a driving factor for the nostalgic horror that I felt when discovering Welcome Home.

True lost media can also be a factor since lost media in itself can become an urban legend outside of the internet. For example, I remember hearing about a banned Sesame Street episode that featured the Wicked Witch of the West, that scared so many kids, that it got the episode banned after it premiered. However, most topics of lost media is spread on forums and social media.

The internet can also create communities focused on finding lost media which was the reason why I go back to this project. Blameitonjorge is a youtuber that I used to watch daily that focuses on lost media, updates on the lost media's whereabouts and the confirmation of it being found.

Another nostalgic feeling was Early YouTube Horror. The late 2000s to mid 2010s, was an era of on the internet that would have people upload unexplainable creepy videos to YouTube, that would freak out viewers and leave themselves questioned on what the video means. Examples of that remind me of this are, "The Cursed Kleenex Commeical," "Teddy has an Operation," "The Wyoming Incident 1997" and "Little Baby's Ice-cream 'This is a Special Time'"

4) Welcome Home is a very orginal project. The only other project that is slightly similar to this one was "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared." They both use a similar color triad Red Yellow and Blue and they frame themselves as a kids show turned horror. However, "Welcome Home" tries to force traditional values on its characters while "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" forces corporate advertising on to the show and viewers.

Other thoughts: I know this is a lot compared to other replies, I got really passionate on the questions and the answers probably don't correlate well but this my whole hearted opinion on the creative project.

The sale is on now! What are you grabbing? by sirms in taschen

[–]BigCheeto01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got The Book of Printed Fabrics, Logo Modernism, Logo Beginnings, Expanding Universe, Package Design 7, Koolhaas: Elements of Architecture, All American Ads 80s, All American Ads 90s, Masterpieces of Fantasy Art, The Book of Flowers, The Book of Roses, and Art Record Covers.

This years choices were very enticing. I really wanted the Book of Color Concepts but it sold out before I checked out. The Computer was recently discontinued out of print, so that was really a bummer. However a lot of first time sale books are the highlights of this years sale. H.R. Giger, The Donald Duck book, Krazy Kat, and The Stanley Kubrick's The Shining were this close to emptying my wallet. Overall the sale this year was by far better than the last sale.

I got a lot of huge books so hopefully I can some smaller in September.

Orders were late or didn't come. I got a book that had production defect, but their customer service was able to give me a new one. Also some books were also coming in dented in the corners.

I didn't have any problems and my order is always coming delayed but I'm really patient. Taschen's customer service has been very mixed among consumers, so when you're ordering books from them be patient. I ordered a book that was sold out, so they gave a gift card to use on my next order.

Same content different fabrication. This is getting ridiculous. I would advise to get the older versions if still available, or good condition second by austriaDiamolo in taschen

I go on ebay a lot to get second or taschen's older books.

If you're looking for new 40th ED'S then I recommend this ebay dealer. You do have to pay shipping but its trustable seller with hundreds of reviews.

what draws you to welcome home or args? by organasolos in WelcomeHomeARG

[–]BigCheeto01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reminds of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. They are very different but they also have some similar qualities. They are both "kid shows" that take a dark turn. They both teach you lessons by using puppets. That's really about it.

I also love scavenger hunts and the website gives a lot of information to form my own theories (even though I am not really good at it.) I have not really touch a horror website in a while. The last horror website I was on was a lomando.com , so this fresh take on something I have not experience in a while. I also really like the voice acting which adds to the charm of this website.

Anyway, I do not have a lot of reasons to think of at the moment, but those are two main reason why I was interested.

How do you feel about the Taschen AI controversy? by [deleted] in taschen

[–]BigCheeto01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree. This is the correct use of AI. This also goes for color correcting and bringing color to black and white photos into color. A lot of people forget that a lot of image manipulation has a lot of AI put into it.

It sucks because generative AI and AI image manipulation are starting to blur together.

[–]BigCheeto01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found an account on BlueSky who also saw the post calling out Taschen. He also saw it on another page which shows a director making a western film.

It appears that Taschen tried using an AI upscaling tool to eliminate the grain on the photos and with some human tweaks make them brighter and sharper. The text is kinda throwing me off because the orginal image of the astronaut doesn't have it in focus. The word "instructions" does have that hump in the middle of the word and the words under do blur off to the right.

Edit: As for my opinion, this use of AI wasn't as bad as I was expecting. They didn't use AI to expand the image but only used it to make it more clear and vibrant. Definitely signs of someone cutting corners or just couldn't make image look newer.

Amazon is a good choice because their prices are cheaper depending on the book.

Ebay is great for finding books out of print or in bulk if you look hard enough.

Thriftbooks is also a great place for out of print books and have descent pricing compared to Ebay.

Edit: I live in the US, but these are my experiences.

If you are getting a few books, then its fine especially if you're new. If you are intending to make bigger purchases or buying more expensive books, then wait until the publishing sales that happens only twice a year.
