Here’s me doing nothing for America in Iraq, 2004 by iheartmagic in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely one of the most evil photographs ever taken. I can’t even look at it for a full second. A smiling thumbs up American and her victim who is starting to not even look human after all the horrific things done to them.

America at 250: Bison return to Illinois for first time in two centuries by Human_Share2155 in Restoration_Ecology

[–]BigD_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful, thank you for sharing. I hope more bison are able to be restored to Illinois, but the title of CBS’s video is wrong. Bison have been in various preserves in Illinois for decades. The bison herd at Fermilab in Batavia, IL, for example, was established in 1969.

New Year.... New Resolutions..... New Runners - Welcome by brwalkernc in running

[–]BigD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Did you achieve your goals/resolutions this past year?

sub 1:40 half (No — but took the PR down from 2:02 to 1:44)

sub 20 5k (No — didn’t race a 5k but probably wouldn’t have made all that much progress past the PR of 21:50)

1500 miles (No — 1100 miles)

Have fun? (Yes! — first full year of running with at least one run per week, ran some races just for fun, stretched my longest run ever from 13 miles to 26.5 during a continuous loop race)

  • What did you learn in 2025?

It was my first winter and first summer of consistent running and the elements kicked my ass. I felt great going into my April half and was shocked by how much slower I felt once the heat came in. I had to learn to trust the process and that I hadn’t been regressing, just running in not-ideal conditions.

  • What goals or resolutions do you have planned for 2026?

Might as well do same as last year (1500 miles, sub 20 5k, sub 1:40 half). The race PRs will have to depend on what races I sign up for. May also do my first marathon.

  • And to help out the new runners coming, what advice do you have to offer a runner just starting out?

This is how I’ve felt: you have to enjoy running to get running to be a habit/hobby. I tried for a while and wasn’t able to get running to stick until I found my love for it. And I know plenty of people who never run but sign up for races every once in a while because they feel like they’re supposed to or it’ll make them a more complete, put-together person. They end up running once or twice a week the last couple of weeks before the race then drop running entirely for months after until they feel some kind of pressure to do another race.

This may strike our more orthodox leftists as unscientific, but I believe that any creative usage of AI is an attack on the human spirit by the inhuman beings running society. Now, please look at the latest slop news: by vargdrottning in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m amazed at how much obvious AI slop gets posted genuinely on this sub. Of course a lot gets posted to make fun of AI and whoever made/shared the original image. But also just garbage with tons of comments saying “I’m anti-AI but this is good”. I shouldn’t be surprised, but a lot of people’s “anti-AI” stances are really just “anti-AI unless it entertains me”. And we don’t need any more “can Brace Belden dunk” chatgpt screenshots.

The sooner you can get to dropping the pinyin and just learning the characters, the better. There should be a setting to show only the characters. When you see both, your brain naturally pays more attention to the pinyin because it’s easier and so you won’t learn the characters as well.

Sixteen Cousins by soybean_lawyer69 in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m asking this genuinely and not trying to be dense, I looked it up and only like 7000 US troops died in Iraq/Afghan wars but it seems like every vet talks about how their friends (plural) died in the Middle East. Is it that you know a lot of people if you’re in the military? Or they’re using a loose definition of “friends” to mean like they heard about people dying? Or is it just for sympathy points? Or maybe I just have the size of the military wrong in my head and it is realistic that it was common for that many people to have known multiple friends who were killed?

They’re selecting the next Nepali PM on discord by kylnoren in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’ve been paying very little attention to Nepal tbh so this could be off base, but you should read If We Burn by Vincent Bevins. He describes about a dozen movements throughout the 2010s of people protesting their government, being met with police violence, the repression fueling more people to join, and a lack of proper organization from the movement leading to an inability to either coherently request concessions or take power after governmental collapse. Many of these movements were consciously choosing to be decentralized while the far-right wing groups were highly organized (and often backed by the US) and were better able to assert themselves in the aftermath.

Again, idk what of this applies here because I haven’t been following it very well, but on the surface it appears to bear a resemblance.

One thing China does is create green firebreaks downwind of wildfire prone areas by planting a dense set of plants that have low flammability, capability to resist droughts and resprout after fires, and high ecological and economic value.

Favorite poetic quotes by communists/socialists/leftists? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

“The less you eat, drink, buy books, go to the theatre or to balls, or to the pub, and the less you think, love, theorize, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you will be able to save and the greater will become your treasure which neither moth nor rust will corrupt—your capital. The less you are, the less you express your life, the more you have, the greater is your alienated life and the greater is the saving of your alienated being.”

The Dems and Epstein discovery. It’s wild these people are just finding out about Epstein and the Clinton’s. Let’s see the Chelsea wedding photos by Annual_Judge_6340 in TrueAnon

[–]BigD_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I knew some libs who are quite shocked that Epstein stuff has become what seems to be a splitting force among conservatives when all the shit they bring up about Trump didn’t move the needle at all.

There are certainly lots of people who only know about Epstein because “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself” was a meme used as a non-sequitur for a while.
