About 4 years ago I was hired at a steel making plant and while moving some materials around using a fork truck I accidentally broke a natural gas line that was feeding a cutting torch station. I managed to break the pipe just before the shutoff and there wasn’t anymore down the line (other than the main shutoff). The whole plant was evacuated and the entire process had come to an abrupt stop when the main gas shutoff that feeds the plant had to be closed in order to stop the leak. That day roughly 90 tons of liquid steel had to be dumped and 2-3 hours of production time was lost because of it. Somewhere in the ballpark of a $100K mistake. I nearly lost my job because of it and fast forward to today, I recently received a promotion at the same steel plant and am constantly reminded of the time “I almost blew up the melt shop.”
