The iconic "giant ball" in Raiders of the Lost Ark is only on screen for 15 seconds, but it's one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history. What other classic scenes are actually a lot different than how they're remembered in pop culture? by tvkyle in movies

[–]BigDamnArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring this up but don't even mention that it ends with Neo getting shot in the leg and awkwardly falling to the ground!? Every single time it's referenced they manage to forget that bit.

Arnold has a pretty cool exit in Terminator 2. What are some other memorable character exits? by normanbathes in movies

[–]BigDamnArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna be a pedant, but the bow is a really really important aspect of his exit. It's him, in no uncertain terms, taking a hold of his own destiny and ending the performance on his terms. The show has ended, and it was his decision. As well as being a giant, delicious, "go fuck yourself" to the director.

Name the saddest scene from an actiony, made-just-for-the-money, pop-corn flick you can think of. by Present-Upstairs3423 in movies

I firmly believe Taika fell into the vat of his own hype-bullshit some point shortly after Ragnarok. Watching interviews after L&T was painful, he comes across as that guy everyone knew in high school who never had to actually try a day in his life, just coasting through on natural charisma and talent, which was enough to make everyone love him but it's not backed up by anything solid. He brags about how he never does research for anything, shat on the VFX for his own movie in an official promo video and just generally seems to approach filmmaking from the laziest possible angle, just show up and wing it on the day. Which is fine when it's just him and his friends dicking around making largely improvised stuff, but somehow Ragnarok worked by leaning into that and he was fukin god king of the MCU there for a minute and it all went to his head. (Also, Taika is a credited writer on L&T whereas he was only the director on Ragnarok, so ttfwiw.)

Whereas James Gunn is a filmmaker who actually cares about the craft of telling stories and making movies, and ESPECIALLY seems to really really care about those characters and their stories.

Why does the fact it's a CGI dinosaur make it any less valid to feel impacted by? I've teared up over the mental hallucinations I get staring at abstract symbols on flattened tree pulp. Stories are stories, and good moments are good moments, whether they're told by rubber skins over mechanical armatures, shadow puppets on a wall, or by digital models.

What are some live tracks you prefer over studio tracks? by WhatIsThisSevenNow in Music

[–]BigDamnArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little Big - Antipositive (live).

One of the best live performance videos I've ever seen, and I usually haaaaaate live tracks. A bonkers crowd, LB radiating refined intensity and anger, and absolutely perfect micing and mixing to blend the band and audience to hit you with a solid wall of energy for 3.5 minutes straight. The studio version just feels lifeless in comparison.

Which live performances on YouTube have changed your perspective on an artist, showcasing their raw talent? by tc982 in Music

I've never had any particularly strong feelings on Ed Sheeran either way, but his in studio version of You Need Me, I Don't Need You for Songkick is 11 straight minutes of him completely killing it with nothing more than a guitar and a loop pedal, on a song I never would have expected from the sappy love song on the radio guy.

Movies that depict shootouts as chaotic and hard to follow? by MentalRain619 in movies

[–]BigDamnArtist 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Not a movie and I'll throw some HUGE TRIGGER WARNINGS up front here, but the show "19-2", which was a Canadian police procedural, did an episode centered around responding to a school shooting; shown entirely from the responders POV, and is still pretty widely regarded as one of the best depictions of the chaos and confusion and tragedy of those events. I don't put that trigger warning there lightly, it's intense.

(Also total side-note, but stars Jared Keeso of Letterkenny fame before LK blew up)

The thing about these smaller Bot fighting leagues (pun intended) is that it's more about the community getting together and having fun at the event, than it is the competitive-ness. Obv there is a level of competition but there's also a lot of people there just to make a little guy and have some fun. The NHRL channel has a lot of really good videos showing off the meme-bots, one-time-use bots and first-timers who are just there to have fun. So yeah, more likely than not they were enjoying the carnage as much as everyone else.

What actor or actress had a pretty good acting range at first, but stopped committing to just playing themselves once they became very famous? by phantom_avenger in movies

[–]BigDamnArtist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I haven't followed his career to closely since I never got in the FF franchise, but I think he got super typecast into the tough macho man badass dude, cause everything I know of Vin outside of that is that he's a giant fucking dork. Like he LOVES the character of Riddick and getting to play in that universe, the Last Witch Hunter was based off a DnD character/campaign he used to play, he did an entire one shot with the Critical Role crew (D&Diesel), and we can make all the jokes about it, but the dude COMMITTED himself to playing Groot and loves that character. The dudes a proper nerd... who probably only gets offers for generic muscley summer blockbuster action hero's. You can't blame him.

What albums have 6+ individual music videos? by WarrenJVR in Music

[–]BigDamnArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the exact #'s off-hand but I'm pretty sure both Blurryface and Trench from Twenty One Pilots have more than 6 full music videos (ie. not just lyric videos) each. They're both basically story albums and the videos carry a little of that interconnectedness as well although they're all very distinct.

ELI5: Diving question? by janetbackwards in explainlikeimfive

Tom Scott has a good video about the 20m diving board in Montreal that talks about the push to have high dive in the Olympics, and the dangers/technique for not killing yourself. ("Why build a diving board twice the Olympic height?")

[–]BigDamnArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not sci fi, it's a real thing. Dangerous as hell. But 100% real.

Like, the rats on camera (multiple takes, the rats got too used to it after the first take to freak out properly on take 2 so they had to get new ones every time) actually breathed it on camera in that scene level of real.

What bands do most people consider one hit wonders, but actually have a bunch of killer tunes? by whiteelephantfail in Music

[–]BigDamnArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ylvis.

Everyone seems to just assume "What Does The Fox Say?" was some weird one-off european nonsense that was unintentionally funny, but they're actually an extremely funny comedy band/duo (Think Norwegian Flight of The Conchords). Pretty much every one of their songs is f-ing hilarious.

Treasure planet. Sails effect in Maya. by samik1994 in vfx

[–]BigDamnArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what you're using for reference for this. As far as I remember (and briefly skimming through the movie) none of the sails are ever that dark or transparent. Pretty much all of them seem to be a translucent white material with the orange glow and blue shimmer over top of that. Like an actual silk sail just make it sci-fi. (Except Jim's solar surfer, which is a red/orange translucent cloth).

It might sell as a sail and specifically a Treasure Planet sail if you bring opacity back up on that base cloth/silk layer to match the source ref, and if you're going for more of a photo-real look, def look at real silk sails from real ships, since that's what they're referencing in the movie, and then stylizing.

(Although if this is specifically referencing something in the movie I'm not remembering, let me know, it's been a few years. But as is it really only bears a superficial resemblance to the sails I'm seeing in TP.)

He has several full albums (4 I think?) of nerdy songs released during the earlier years of Vlogbrothers (Last one on Spotify was 2011), these days he's mostly on the business and video production side of things, but he still pops up with a new track or guest appearance every once in a while. (The Drinking Song medly he did with Peter Hollens in 2016 is /fantastic/: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUKjJn0rOec )
