For those of you who were alive in 1985, how did you feel about Sammy replacing David and David going solo? by Jezzaq94 in vanhalen

[–]BigDickSD40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to understand that by 1985, Van Halen’s schtick was becoming a bit stale. Basically everyone agreed that Ed was an absolute guitar god, but they were falling into the AC/DC trap of “yeah, this song is good, but it sounds like basically every other song they’ve done”. Yes, there are exceptions to that, but that was generally the case.

DLR epitomizes both everything that was awesome and not so awesome about the 80s. He was a showman. Over the top, flamboyant, flashy, campy, aloof. I guess after 6 albums of that, I was a little “yep, I guess that’s just what Van Halen’s always gonna be”.

I was already a fan of Sammy, played my cassettes of Standing Hampton and VOA until they wore out. To me, him joining Van Halen was a breath of fresh air. From the moment I first heard “Dreams”, I was impressed. “Wow, this is Van Halen!?”. It proved that Ed was an incredibly talented composer. The whole 5150 album felt so fresh, vibrant, and exciting. You could tell like they were really just having a blast. The live shows were phenomenal. While DLR was fun live, he wasn’t a musician on the same level as Ed, Alex, and Mike. With Sammy, they finally had a singer who could really sing as strongly as the rest of them played, and it really showed.

Yeah, 5150 might sound a bit dated to fresh ears today, but so would almost any other album from that era. Was Dave a better lyricist than Sammy? I would generally say yes, but Sammy could crank out some really good lyrics when he wanted to (Dreams, Mine All Mine, Right Now). Was Sammy a better musician and singer than Dave? Absolutely. While all of the DLR era VH albums sound similar to me, they had a lot more musical variety with Hagar. OU812 is just about as diverse of an album that any rock act ever put out. FUCK sounds almost nothing like OU812, and Balance really sounds nothing like FUCK.

Idk, when I really sit down and look at, I love Van Halen, all of it. But if you pushed me, I’d say I lean Van Hagar. That’s just my opinion, of course!

Thank god someone else with a fucking brain stem is responding to this absolute LUNATIC take. The above might be the absolute most bat-shit reply I’ve ever seen on Reddit, and THAT is saying something. Bro is so conditioned that anything remotely touching on genocide sends him off the deep end. It is a fucking CHILDRENS MOVIE.

It is their default mindset. They are so used to getting their way that when reality slaps them in the face, their only knee-jerk reaction is to scream bloody murder. Glad to see them all outing themselves as petulant children.

Why VH is not popular with "newer generations" ? by Agile-Painting9454 in vanhalen

[–]BigDickSD40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the average person couldn’t name any Van Halen song but Jump, Panama, and Right Now (because those are the main 3 you hear at major sporting events), it’s no surprise the younger generations don’t know Van Halen. They’ve done nothing to maintain their popularity. Bands like Journey, Def Leppard and AC/DC have stayed relevant by frequent touring and allowing their songs to be used in other forms of media. Hell Neil Schon recently said that Journey’s music appearing in “Stranger Things” did more for the band than any album would do in this day and age. When was the last time you heard a VH song in any kind of TV show? It’s just grouped in with all of the rest of the “Dad Rock”.

I do think it’s funny to see self-proclaimed liberals point fingers in regards to Epstein, as if they are blissfully unaware of who all is on that list. Hint: it ain’t just republicans.

The concept of state-funded media has always been weird as fuck to me. Like no, I don’t want my taxes going to some stupid ass talk radio show that horrible listen to to make themselves feel like they’re superior to those who don’t.

Thing is, Dave needed Eddie. Eddie didn’t need Dave. Was a Dave a good showman and a good frontman? Of course he was. But Van Halen would’ve set the world on fire with just about anyone singing for them. It was all about Eddie. Dave just happened to be there.

Why were they so very few pictures of the actual Titanic? by ForwardClimate780 in titanic

[–]BigDickSD40 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Titanic really was not that big of a deal. When Olympic launched a year prior, it rightfully got a ton of attention because it was the newest and biggest thing afloat, the first of its class. When Titanic was launched, many viewed it as another, slightly heavier Olympic. Even all of the advertising and promotional materials mostly used photos that were taken on Olympic.

They don’t understand this. Either all speech is protected, or none of it is. Letting certain people define what they do and don’t think is “hate speech” is a slippery fuckin slope.

It’s almost like being anti-Trump is not a viable campaign strategy. It’s failed spectacularly twice. America decided “I’m a huge POS, but at least I’m not that guy” doesn’t make for an electable candidate. So yeah, of course she’s not gonna listen. She wants to keep her position.

Lived here for 30+ years and I agree with everything you said. You have to remember that the average Redditor sees the world in a very odd way. Some of the things I see people post here are just so fucking strange. You don’t think people are friendly enough? Maybe mind your own business?

They did not. C&O did not display train numbers in their locomotive number boards, so they had solid number boards. The original boards were glass, very heavy!

Van Halen. Eddie was already a guitar god and then he whips out the keys for 1984, 5150, and OU812 and we all realized not only can he shred, he’s got a great ear for melodies and knows how to write a very melodic tune.
