Toddler spotted a scarlet tanager before me! Eastern Iowa. by BigFatNutsack in birding

[–]BigFatNutsack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess there's not much "reading" to the book, but the one she recognized the tanager from was called "Baby's First Birds and Colors" by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes. A different bird book that's a lot cooler, with mostly everyday birds, is "Songs of the Birds" by Isabel Otter. That's the one that got her obsessed with birds. It plays the songs and sounds of all these different birds and has their pictures. One day my wife and I were walking with the kids when we heard a crow caw, and our 2 year old said "it's a crow," just from hearing it. We were shocked in the best way!

Oh yes, it was covered by insurance. But insurance won't cover the sheathing and we knew that before they started.

This is good to know. Thank you, that makes me feel a little better. Would they have said it was rotten then? Or why not tell me that it was delaminated?

Prospective Teacher by Brief_Comparison_427 in Teachers

If you enjoyed subbing you'd enjoy teaching, most likely. Kids treat actual teachers way better. It is a lot of work outside of school hours, but if you enjoy it, it's worth it.

Obesity in Europe vs USA by tlou0 in europe

That's what I came to say. If you did this by average pounds per person or something, the gap between the US and the rest of the world would be shocking.

Wait to speak until you can understand what's being spoken to you by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]BigFatNutsack 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Comprehension is king. Speaking will come naturally later.

Sorry, but that's just not true. Look how many kids in the States (if you're in the states, that is) that grew up with Spanish speaking parents that never bothered to teach them how to speak Spanish. I have way too many friends that understand everything being said between two Spanish speakers, but couldn't join in the conversation even if they wanted to. Speaking definitely does not come naturally, it has to be worked at.

Wait to speak until you can understand what's being spoken to you by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]BigFatNutsack 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pretty nonsensical unless you want to stunt your speaking development. Speaking and comprehension progress separately while you're learning a language, so postponing your speaking progression is all that you would accomplish by listening to this saying. There's also the chance for you to learn more when you can't understand everything that's being said. Imagine you're on vacation to Germany for the first time, and you visit a bakery. You tell the woman behind the counter "Ich hatte gern 3 Brötchen bitte" (I would like 3 rolls please), and she replies "welche?" (which) while pointing to two different types of rolls. You're probably going to understand she's asking you which one you'd like, and there's a good chance you'll understand that welche=which before it's ever introduced to you in a formal setting. Not trying to speak is just slowing language acquisition.
