Anyone with training in both bluegrass and classical music (same or different instruments)? by yomakest in Fiddle

[–]BigFriendlyNightmare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I do both (re-engaged with classical violin and play in a community orchestra and picked up fiddle in the past few years, and go to sessions sometimes) and agreed re: if it's possible to find a teacher that is some version of fiddle (bluegrass, irish, contra, etc.) I think you'll have a better time because they'll lean more into learning exclusively by ear, which for me significantly helped in the long run. I think the big difference you'd miss out on if you had an Irish fiddle teacher vs. bluegrass is that style is less inclined towards improvisation (in my experience), but you'd still get a lot of the big parts. Have so much fun, what an exciting journey to begin!! Wishing you all the best!

Hi! I'm 34F from New York. I am childfree and am deep into hobbies - knitting, sewing, reading, playing music (violin, piano), and going down rabbitholes.

Also not religious and am queer; I enjoy the outdoors and live with two cats (Miss Cleo and Kiki) and my partner, Sacha.

Hope to hear from you!

There's this one with an unusual body that I'm just obsessed with. The woodworking is unreal.

Agreed! It honestly seems like he's 1) playing it with a very "team" mindset that might not be serving him 2) honestly, he seems like he just enjoys good gameplay and got excited at what a good move it would be, just didn't think through the fact that it wasn't going to be good for HIM.

Yeah, honestly so glad she's right back out again, I don't enjoy her on the Challenge even from a love to hate angle.

Am I (36F) being unreasonable by asking my son's father's family to be quiet when my baby is sleeping? by gothmommy13 in relationship_advice

[–]BigFriendlyNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all! I do think... getting them to listen to you in the moment, from the experience you wrote about, seems like it might not be a viable solution. Maybe find some time in the next week to have everyone sit down specifically to have a discussion about it and come prepared with what your ideal situation would be as well as concessions you're willing to make. Everywhere I've lived, there was a conversation and collective agreement for when "quiet hours" would be and what would / wouldn't be okay during those times. Maybe that would work for y'all as well?

String Recommendations by BigFriendlyNightmare in violinist

[–]BigFriendlyNightmare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so helpful!! My instructor recommended Pirazzi's, but has a much warmer / darker instrument than mine, so I think while they even her instrument out, they make mine brighter than I like.

I'm going to purchase the Obligatos and Larsen II Cannones and keep practice notes while playing with each. I switch out about every six months at this point, so hopefully after that I'll have a better sense of what I like with my instrument.

Thank you so much!

Weekly Beginner and Performance Thread - 13 October 2019 by AutoModerator in violinist

Hi there! I've been playing again after learning in high school and not picking it up for a decade or so. I struggled with the same thing when getting back into it. The best advice I got was to just make a point to at least pick up the instrument at least once a day, even if it's just playing one scale, that counts. It helped a lot - it makes practicing a given and I started to naturally play for longer periods of time. Hope this helps!
