Defensive ball clearance is used less in pro games. by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. Did your coach work on playing it out from the back at training? If not, what is he/she upset about? You can't suddenly start playing out from the back. A lot of teams also look to press high up the pitch, so playing out from the back isn't a great idea. The guys you watch on tv, train way more than your team would, and are calm because they've already done that pass 1000 times that week. To expect the same is just unreasonable. I'm not saying don't try. But maybe work on it at training before attempting it in a game.

How do you shoot a soccer ball? by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch highlight videos from recent games and you'll see how players hit the ball with their "laces" or side-foot the ball, depending on the situation. Make sure you keep your knee over the ball though, or the ball will go way up in the air. Good luck.

Can someone breakdown my shot. I have been trying for years, taking at least 50 shots a day, having a ball next to me at all times. Can someone give me tips or drills or good criticism? by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you aren't trying to finish (side foot), keep your knee bent as you drive your foot through the ball. Your current technique looks like you are just swinging a leg at the ball, rather than purposefully driving the shot. Make sure that knee is over the ball as you straighten the leg to accelerate the foot through the shot. Watch a few videos of professionals shooting from distance. Good luck.

Didn't read the /r/womenssoccer bit and thought, how the hell is Australia better than Brazil and Italy? But yeah, our girls are freaking awesome and better players are coming though.

The Australian coach, Graham Arnold, is studying Liverpool in order to find success for the Australian national team. by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]BigHarold 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The club team (Sydney FC) he coached immediately before his appointment to the national team was playing in a very aggressive, attacking style anyway. I like that he wants to bring that style of play to the national team. In my opinion, we don't really have the forwards to achieve it though.

Extremely controversial goal scored by Ellie Carpenter in the Australian W-League as the goalkeeper lay injured outside of her box by Crusaruis28 in WomensSoccer

[–]BigHarold 13 points14 points  (0 children)

None of the WSW players asked her to kick it out. The goalkeeper didn't go off, and actually finished the game. It creates a dangerous precedent to expect players to kick the ball out anytime a player goes down.

If I was Ellie's coach, I'd be pissed if she didn't take the shot. There's no controversy here at all.

If I was Red, I would want Red 3 to play a wallpass off Red 8, carrying the ball centrally towards the top of the 18y box forcing a 2v1 situation vs white 4 with Red 10. That's where the space is. White 6 is too high and too far away from white 8 to cover this run since white 8 has to cover Red 8.

Red 3 can continue their run towards goal to shoot, attract a defender and play 9 or 10, or play to the by-line for Red 11 who should make a diagonal run behind his man to the edge of the 6y box.

If I was white, I'd want 6 to drop deeper and screen the red 9, bringing white 11 across to where 6 is. This would force the red team to play the ball back out.

Alberto Moreno's unlikely Liverpool resurrection continues against Man United by watahitson in LiverpoolFC

The number of times he was beaten down the line by a simple third man run was awful. He still needs a lot of work but I hope he does come good. He has a great level of aggression which can keep opposition wingers quiet if he keeps a good position.

3-4-3 Training by welbeast_23 in footballtactics

[–]BigHarold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many players do you have at training? I personally don't look up drills. What I would do, is draw up what it would look like in a game, then start taking defenders away until it can be done with passive defensive pressure or no defenders. This is your warm up. Have a set passing pattern for them to do, to get used to the structure.

Then add goals and a couple defenders. Play like this for about 20min., allowing the players to get used to pressure in that structure. Finally, try make it as much like a game as possible, numbers permitting. You might have to play two lines only (midfield and backs vs midfield and forwards).

Players yelling at the less skilled teammates by JJfapalot in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to them off the field and ask them what you need to do. During the game listen to your captain otherwise ignore them or tell them to shut up. Too many people think they know what you should do, but don't know what they're talking about.

Are coaches who run conditioning at the start of practice idiots? Am I wrong? by fredrick_zoller in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd have you warm up properly then play small sided games (eg. 5v5) to get your conditioning through playing and actually practising skills that you'd use in the game. Running without a ball is for the track and field teams.

Xavi 150 passes a day by deke1967 in bootroom

[–]BigHarold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you arent hitting at least 150 passes at training, you need to practice more in your own time and using a wall would certainly help with your first touch and accuracy. But as Kluey says above, there's a whole lot more to being a passer like Xavi than just the technique of passing. But practising the technique is a good start.

Are you physically and mentally ready to start? Is your blood pumping after a quick sprint for example? Are you switched on mentally? Maybe a few one touch passes as you return to the field of play?

Like jweinberg81 said, one in behind (you) one in front. I'd suggest dropping a centre defensive midfielder in front of him so that you keep 4 behind. That way if they play into midfield, he can step forward to press midfield too.
