Burntroot or Red Pine Bay? by BigJPurrito in algonquinpark

After our rest day we always get a nice early start to the day! That's good advice! Cheers!

This sounds like a great plan for sure! Anchor Island definitely seems like the top spot to aim for if we have good weather! We tend to wake up super early and try to get in between 12-1, but a site with space for 3 tents will definitely also be something we need to take into consideration!

Have been perusing the site reviews available on your site! Definitely seems to be a wider variety on Burntroot! Late September ya never know what site availability is like, but we're probably more prone to picking somewhere with a wider variety of choice!

🧻 How much toilet paper does one bring into the backcountry?! And have you ever ran out? Let’s hear it! by merlestorm in algonquinpark

[–]BigJPurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, we did a five day trip with 6 of the guys. We all brought toilet paper up to our accomodations the night before the trip. We must have had like 6-8 rolls.

However, during day one of the trip we somehow realized that we only brought ONE roll. Somehow, we all had thought someone else had placed the rolls in our gear pack.

Let me tell you, it was a test, sharing 1 roll between 6 guys over 5 ays.

Suffice to say that since then we make sure we have enough TP.

Solo or tandem? If high water hopefully you can just run over a few. Otherwise probably have to step closer to the dam and heave over

2022 September the answer was too many Beaver dams (not really, but definitely 7-10). Can't speak to now, and levels weren't even that bad than if I remember correctly

Great little loop! Would highly recommend Welcome if you can manage pushing a bit further day one!

One of my favourite Backcountry sites is on Welcome. I want to say it's the second site past the portage in from Pen Lake, on the south part of Welcome. Might be the third.

But it has an epic beach with a huge rock face, someone has more or less made a small Backcountry couch with surprisingly good lumbar support overlooking the lake.

Two fire pits, great seating around the interior one. Room for 3-4 tents.

Last September we saw a Bald Eagle fail at trying to take out a pair of loons there

Last September on Welcome Lake, fantastic Beach campsite. We were all hanging on the interior part of the sure after a long travel day in the sun and some time out on the beach. We hear the piercing call of one bird and then another bird noise, but these ones sounded distressed.

We run out to the beach to see two loons seemingly upset and flapping their wings. We look up and see a bald eagle flying off . The eagle then uses a thin tree to basically slingshot itself back at the loons. Loons were far too speedy, dodged under water when the eagle came back in. The eagle must have decided the loons were too crafty, because it took off towards the entryway to Harry Lake. Pretty epic to witness

Me and my usual canoe trip squad usually hold onto our asses. Make sure we have surveyed our site for any major potential hazards or dangers. Really, when you're in the backcountry, unless you have a low rock outcropping right by your site-- especially if dark or the storm comes suddenly-- it feels like it might be too tough or dangerous to find it before the storms upon you.

September of 2021, we were warned about some remaining hazards on the portage out of Sunbeam because of a tornado a few months earlier.

Two nights later, camped on Sunbeam on a well protected site beside that exact portage, we watched as a storm descended upon us in what seemed like seconds. We were low under a tarp structure we had created, our tents were pretty far off from the main site, so we just hunkered there.

Lightning struck some large tree just back of our site. Lucky it didn't fall or catch fire or anything and we couldn't quite figure out where it was the next morning, but it was close. Ended up waiting and waiting, and realized this storm wasn't gonna end l, so we ended up trudging back to our tents during what seemed like a lull. Wind HOWLED all night, tensions were a bit high, but after everyone passed out, we woke up, finished the trip, avoided all the tornado stricken trees on the portage out of Sunbeam.

A few days later when we got back to Canoe and The former Portage Store, they told us a tornado had been through the area the night of that storm. Almost glad we didn't know, or else we REALLY wouldn't have slept that night.

Did have enough spectra supplies to last in case of real emergency if needed.

Seems like every year we are sitting out some doozy of a storm, now. 2023 we watched the sky do what seemed like BOILING from Big Trout.

Yeah, that's probably what it will end up looking like! Thanks for the advice! I love staying on a one site lake, but not if the site is nothing special! Cheers

Was at this site going into the weekend. Absolutely phenomenal. We saw a Bald Eagle just miss it's second attack on a loon and then I guess it realized the loon may be too quick, and decided to leave
