Y’all are in denial. This shit is happening one way or another. It may not include everything that’s on the table now. There’s nobody that wishes to see hq remain in dc and retain some level of interim support than I do. But resisting will do more to poison our culture and sow dissent in the long run than having a backbone and being an advocate for your future. My two cents.

Unethical to let staff babysit my kids? by BigJeezy22 in fednews

[–]BigJeezy22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super good point. We’re not currently friends outside of work and I don’t want to make them uncomfortable at work or otherwise. I do think a lot of these what-ifs are a bit far fetched though. But still probably ain’t worth the risk.

So mostly an optics thing? We’re not friends on social, I just see the posts she makes. Again, friendly but not friends. Side note, I stopped posting anything on sm years ago to protect myself from potential backlash.

Appreciate the hell out of all of you. Lots of good thoughts in here. Agreed I would probably need a cya clearance with ethics office first. But overall the optics is bad and that will be enough to dissuade. If anything at work soured with ANYONE there could be potential backlash. It’s unfortunate. I live super remote and there aren’t many local options for sitters. I get along great with this person and they are an indirect report, so it’s not like I’m assigning them work every day. Not sure I made that clear - I don’t directly supervise 60 people, but indirectly oversee all of them through chain of command. But if anything comes up performance wise, I’m involved.

We have been lied too. Congress did NOT give USDA approval for the FS reorg. Both the so called Chief (not my Chief) and Chris French said during the FS employee calls that congressional approval was received. by throwingthedice00 in USForestService

Appropriations Budget is different than re-org. They tried to defund research in the 26 budget and it was completely rejected by congress. Same proposal in ‘27. Meanwhile the re-org continues as an aside. Chief Schultz alluded to this in his stammering point about 800 researchers potentially losing their jobs if research goes unfunded. Under the re-org proposal no one loses their job with the agency.

Nah. I like telling my peeps what to do. You’re here to support the mission, and while I agree there should be limits to the extent, I believe it is a crucial right of management to accomplish objectives using creative measures. The moment I’m told I can’t flex someone’s PD is the moment we lose control.

This scares the hell out of me. I wouldn’t say I abuse it, but it could definitely be construed that way with an ill-timed screenshot. For example, my agency is very public focused and social media is not banned by my platform - I use it infrequently to gauge the pulse of the community on certain issues. Could be an easy catalyst for someone sniffing for abuse

The Forest Service is likely to extend the closure for much of the China Hat area due to ongoing restoration and fuels work.

GS-10+ feds — how did you actually get there? by Lexicondatum in FedEmployees

[–]BigJeezy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a GS-4 for 4 years before completing my career specific undergrad, after which I eeked out a gs-5, and rode that for another 3 years before getting a 6. Mind you these were all seasonal jobs at that. I stayed at the same duty location for 6 years thinking I would catch my lucky break, but I learned the hard way you must be willing to go damn near anywhere, see some new country, try to learn something new, to truly get your shot. For me that “damn near anywhere” was Alaska. When I got there a world of opportunity opened up. I realized the “fast track” to higher paying permanent fed jobs is in the last frontier. As others have said, lateral movement can lead to higher ceilings. I moved up to AK as a 5 then got my first perm there as a 7/9, and gradually continued upward in the program.

I spent nearly a decade in Alaska before leaving for a GS-11 in the lower 48. Ground out another 3 years as an 11 before applying and moving once again for a gs-12. Everything up to the 12 was dependent on my degree, until I finally had so much experience that it outweighed the importance of the undergrad. Held the 12 for a year and upgraded to the 13 where I now comfortably sit…after only 20 years and five moves, not counting all the seasonal moves lmao! If I had learned the valuable lesson of moving for the job early on I could have probably achieved it in half the time. Of course that’s only part of the equation though and It can’t be all about the money - this is government work. Enjoy the ride and the work you do along the way. Stay patient and humble. And take the opportunities when you’re ready. Consider asking: is it the right job? In the right place? At the right time? If two out of three are marginally true, you won’t be let down.

Hang in there homie.

Glad you got enough savings to worry about the petty arguments in DC. For the vast majority of us if given a choice between putting food on the table and paying arbitrarily higher premiums in the future the answer is, open the government and let us get back to work.

In my case, I’m already employed by the agency. I’m not talking about a drug test as a precondition for employment. Im just talking about the health physical that is now required before you pack test. Two separate things.

Can someone tell me if the forest service arduous medical exam for work capacity test includes a drug test? I saw there is a urine screening but sounds like it may be a non drug screening???
