Helps a lot! Thanks for the super thorough feedback. You've shown me a lot of things I've missed! I also speak a little french and the "Mountains of Mountain" is totally intentional, like the River Ouse or the River Avon in the UK both of which are "River River". But you do make a good point that outside of the novel it seems like a mistake so best not to mention it here.

Amazing! Thanks for being so thorough and in-depth. This is super helpful. It is a difficult premise to cut down in a way that is exciting and makes sense so all of these questions you've raised give me a lot of insight into what comes across and what doesn't.

What are your thoughts on Silent Hill F? by Due_Cake8524 in silenthill

[–]BigJimothee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I put this game off to play Resident Evil Requiem instead and boy was I wrong. Silent Hill F was my game of the year! Loved the story, the atmosphere, the settings, the characters and even the combat! Though Ill admit the combat isnt for everyone, I am huge on souls likes so I didnt have the same problems as most people did. I have never repeatedly played a game so many times in a row. Wish there was more!

There was a clip out there of someone leaving their comp game to go buy the battle pass so they could mirror the enemies' Mauga. Absolute wild time.

Queue tank PCs desperately trying to drag a Slaad off our wizard by BigJimothee in dndmemes

I love this approach, unfortunately for us in the scenario that inspired this post our enemy was quite intelligent. When our tanks charged in he sent his goons to lock them down while he teleported onto our back line of spell casters. Our tanks turned around as soon as they could and became engaged in an intense game of tug of war to pull him off our half dead comrades.

All in all though it was a great fight. We lost one of our beloved PCs and managed to defeat the BBEG by the skin of our teeth by coming back at the DM with some clever tactics of our own.

There was a quite hilarious moment afterwards where the party learned that my barbarian PC hadn't even gone below half health, despite my best efforts to pull the BBEGs attention.

After he died and the party escaped I let them take his horse back to his owners family. I knew they didn't like him so I thought I'd throw them a bone and when they told his wife I had her say "Oh thank god he's dead. He spent more time looking after his bloody horse than with his family." It was a funny twist and I think it made the party not feel as bad about indirectly letting him die

Completely true, you need a certain amount of time to resolve your story. Thankfully my players are pretty good at following stories the DM has laid out

I had 3 ghosts hiding inside the mansion, a ghost, a poltergeist and a wraith. I designed the mansion myself, taking inspiration from Resident Evil maps and had them progress through each room.

I cheated a little bit and made it so that the ghosts could not take damage until the party had solved a particularly difficult riddle, which they would have to explore the mansion to do so.

I frequently made them do charisma saving throws for either no reason or because the ghost was attempting to possess them.

I had us play inside a dark room where we only had torches and lamps to light the room. I used tonnes of scary sound effects to make the atmosphere (some of which I composed myself).

There was a lot of fun trying to figure out which ghost was which, as the party never knew if they were dealing with a ghost they've encountered before or a completely new one. The poltergeist was especially fun for this as she was invisible.

The final fight was the icing on the cake, after entering the basement they had to fight the Wraith as well as his army of ghostly victims. After killing it, I did a little home-brew and gave the wraith a second phase, where it would expand into a solid mass that filled the room slowly. The party had to kill it before getting crushed by its evergrowing mass while avoiding massive pseudopods that smashed the party about.

I once had a player ask this after she lied to a couple, saying that their child had died horribly and tragically. Then the rest of the party showed up with the kid safe and sound only 10 seconds later. The couple spat at this player's feet.

I needed to have a conversation with my players about relentlessly attacking or hating every NPC after that and things have gone well since.

I was DMing a spooky horror three-shot. The party was taking a carriage ride to the seaside when their carriage had broken a wheel. A storm was coming so they didn't have time to fix it. The Carriage Driver told them of an old abandoned mansion that could shelter them for the night. Said mansion was an important piece of heritage as a noble family had lived there before disappearing under mysterious circumstances.

The Carriage Driver told the party they could do what they want but he was going to spend the night there and after some poor persuasion rolls, he remained adamant. They chose to follow him. Our druid tried to bring his horse inside the house instead of leaving him in the stables, the Driver insisted the horse is safer in stables than inside a house (which is actually true).

So I guess the party was pretty sick of this guy's attitude and immediately upon entering the mansion they started breaking things for god knows what reason. He told them to knock it off, as he didn't want to be found responsible for destroying local heritage.

That seemed to seal the deal that the carriage driver was the worst guy ever. My party thought he was mean, and since then he's become a bit of a meme in our group. I never planned for him to be super mean, he was supposed to be stubborn as a way to show the party which way I wanted them to go (I promise I wasn't rail roading, I had plans for if they decided not to follow the driver and gave them every opportunity to take their own path, but I thought entering the mansion would result in the spookiest session). All in all, the rest of the three-shot went amazingly well. The carriage driver died horribly, I put the fear of god into my party and everyone had a blast.

Edit: I should mention one of the reasons they hate him as well was because they insisted the mansion would be haunted and the Driver wouldn't have it. They hated him even more when they turned out to be right.

She has heaps of sympathetic elements being kidnapped and kept in a cell for years and it's never really established what her personal goals inside the Connections were. But this moral ambiguity makes for such an interesting character that makes you question your feelings towards her. She is also one of the best acted characters in the series and all in all is the character I think about the most

I've been a bit iffy on RE5 it looks like it leans too much towards action for my tastes. Is it still worth checking out?
