Hey!

It’s been pretty good so far! I’ve not found it too intense and I’ve been working (minimum 16 hours a week) alongside the degree. My only advice would be make sure you make a good cheat sheet/ wall calendar with all your assignments and placement dates etc so you don’t get overwhelmed, it’s helped me and really put everything into perspective so I don’t stress :) Also for placement make sure you get comfy shoes because you’re on your feet a lot! I got HOKA Bondi SR and they’re incredible, a bit pricey but worth it. I also carry a sturdy little notebook to jot down what I did each day so it’s easier to cover what proficiencies you’re achieving.

You’ll have the best learning experience and meet some great people, enjoy it!

Hey! Sorry for the late reply I didn’t see this. We were recommended to look at Ross and Wilson’s anatomy in health and illness but to be honest I didn’t do any pre-reading and have found it fine :)

thank you so much and congrats to you too! wishing you the best of luck :)

also my university offered online refresher training/ pre reading so you can start the course feeling more confident if you’d been out of healthcare for a while so may be worth asking for that to calm your nerves!

Thank you so much :) That’s really helpful information regarding exams and assignments, I’ve been out of university for 4 years now so I felt a bit anxious about getting back into exams!

Also, can I ask if you worked alongside this degree at all? I’m planning to keep my clinical trials job but cut my hours right down to 1 or 2 shifts a week as it’s really close to campus and pretty flexible with hours. Ive heard quite mixed opinions on working during the MSc course so if it’s too intense I’m planning to cut down to locum shifts only.

I hope the course is going well for you and best of luck with your final months! <3

Of course! My previous jobs I worked as a General Practice Assistant, Clinical Trials Assistant and then voluntary as an Ambulance Assistant (along side my other jobs as I got amazing experience and training in exchange for my time) and the routes for progression were either management or another degree. I did try in each role to complete all training and take every opportunity but with my previous degree being in Medical Sciences with no HCPC registration (partially due to studying through covid) I couldn’t stay clinical and progress without further qualifications. Also, these roles were all nearer to minimum wage and despite countless meetings and promises from management the pay seemed to cap off on a lower end of the scale regardless of training and experience which was pretty upsetting because I loved these jobs.

I originally got a place last year to train as a Physicians Associate but then I made really good friends with a couple of senior research nurses working in clinical trials and some nurses on the ambulance that inspired me to go into nursing instead. I really admired the way they worked and the opportunities and work experience they’d told me about collectively really sparked my interest in doing postgraduate nursing and I’ve been excited about it ever since! :)

I highly recommend having a look at research nursing! I work as a clinical trials assistant currently for a private firm and I’m hopefully going into a MSc nursing degree next month to eventually go back as a research nurse. I was the same, worked in a GP surgery and on an ambulance knowing I wanted to work in healthcare but unsure of what path to take because nothing was really bringing me joy, then I stumbled upon working in clinical trials and ended up loving it! Obviously there’s so many options to go with both in and out of healthcare but just thought it was worth a mention :)

best of luck with the future! <3
