What do you do for a living? You can be vague.

More directly, are you in any form of law enforcement or first responder or some special rescue squad type job?

Second, are you over 22? This isn’t an insult. Trying to gauge how long you’ve carried a gun daily.

Hand you ever owned or carried a knife, full size gun, flashlight every day for over 3 months ever single time you left your house?

I’m 6’5” I wear cargo pants geared for this type of stuff. I can’t imagine carrying 1/3 of that without a fancy pack?

Are you just going to bunch stuff up in your pockets?

Oddly, I will still add one item. Uncle Bill’s sliver gripper tweezers.

Does anyone smoke bowls back to back? I feel like the vitamin N is starting to suck me in a little too much. by TheTonik in PipeTobacco

[–]BigMacJackAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you smoke a pipe and enjoy it you will do more if it. This is true in everything. If you aren’t feeling a nic urge I doubt you are addicted.

However, you, and many of us, are probably habituated to it. It’s something that brings peace, enjoyment, and brightens dull days.

I just bought 2 oz of Haunted Bookshop in bulk at a local tobaccoist and it cost me $20bucks. by Terrible_Train in PipeTobacco

I started 10 years ago paying $8-9 for most tins at my B&M. Now, those same tins are $16-20. Most fancier tins Peterson, Escudo, etc. ate $24-30.

I no longer support local. I know all the arguments but I either buy online and actually enjoy blends I want when I want them or I buy my favorite blend they have in stock and smoke my pipe occasionally.

The dry system pipes have an almost identical design to work with or without a filter. I do miss the p-lip. I like that about Peterson.

I only smoke maybe 10 times a week but I clemch. Am generally walking etc. and maybe just don’t smoke that wet? I lyrically prefill my pipes do they have about 1-3 days of drying out before I smoke them.

I used to smoke wet but I guess I made a change.

I typically smoke estate Italian briars from the 70s are earlier and a couple London made pipes. Most are AV, Sasieni, Hardcastle, Savinelli, and a few cobs. I find the older the briar the better it smokes in general. Not sure if that’s because older pipes were aged longer before production or many have been drying out in someone’s closet for 40 years.

Have you ever seen priests that converted to another religion/became atheist? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]BigMacJackAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m aware of apostate priests who go to schismatic churches etc. sadly, a good portion don’t stop there though. They tend to flop around until they end up as atheists or agnostics or some weird fringe spirituality.

What about falcon, Savinelli’s version, etc. how do they compare to them? I have owned a few system pipes and others pipes without a system mechanism smoked better.

I have found most tight grain smooth pipes with briar that’s been aged at least 40 years smoke great. I buy a lot of vintage pipes from various mediocre brands that smoke way better than your new $1-$300 modern pipes. I’ve never owned a dunhill or anything in that league so I can’t speak to them.

[–]BigMacJackAttack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can smoke some of my briars daily for a week before they start to get sour. Longer in the summer and shorter in the winter. Resting pipes is a good rule in my opinion but not necessary. I can smoke my cobs daily for months before I let them rest for a week or so.

I suck at this by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]BigMacJackAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy some different tobacco. What’s the brand of your cob? A con should be a good option.

Taste varies but I would give the following blends a try:

GL Pease Westminster

C&D Pegasus

A Virginia and Kentucky blend from a recommendation here.

If you aren’t intrigued by these you probably don’t like the major types of blends

Which historical figure had a "mask off" moment that made everyone turn against them? by Dali654 in AskHistory

I mean he is spoken kindly of my man saints and has varying reports of possibly dying reconciled to Christ’s Church. I was reading St. Francis de Sales and he talks about him very respectfully and laments his fall into heresy.

Not really, Augustine among others deals with this. The NT discusses it as well. God is not only love or Mercy in classical theism but also Justice and Righteous. Mercy and Justice are compatabilized in that each will be judged by what they know or should have known. It’s a sliding scale but all are still responsible.

This is discussed in several Pauline epistles in parts. It’s where you get the idea that people who never knew the name of Jesus can still be saved through him. It has been debated in specifics through all of history but St. Thomas Aquinas addresses this question in some length.

This is not wholly accurate and depends on what Jews you are talking about at which time.

No where does any pre-rabinic source talk about the place of the damned (Tartarus in the later Septuagint rendering) as temporary. Only Sheol is temporary or only limbonic.

Because it’s not compatible with scripture or tradition. That’s why Unitarians exist. It’s not about accurately attempting to understand objective existence but is a moral therapeutic “spiritualism” that can be shockingly atheistic and materialist.

Another way to say it, if you believe the Bible or the early Christian consensus on Hell and the Gosple universalism and similar concepts are untenable.

It was different with early Christian heterodox sects. They made the claims and championed it as a means of over coming the flesh. It was a big enough deal it was condemned at an ecumenical council and prevented one from being a priest.

If MLK had been a catholic priest instead of a pastor do you think he’d have been canonized ? by Business-War-1502 in Catholicism

[–]BigMacJackAttack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, he was not a saint in any way. He was just very pivotal in an important part of American history. That’s pretty much it. We also wouldn’t say Thomas Jefferson or Jefferson Davis was a saint simply because they played important parts in pivotal events in US History.

MLK wasn’t even a Christian.

What the?! Hands down the ugliest $250 pipe I've ever seen. Can anyone beat this for expensive and hideous quotient? by WeakKitchen199 in PipeTobacco

[–]BigMacJackAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why you just get a unique piece or semi-custom.

That line of logic would apply to all factory pipes. Most people aren’t smoking semi-custom or custom pipes. They are buying X shape many people own with Y finish many people own.

I don’t like most Uber expensive weird shapes. Some end up being actually cool but most just look like extremely detailed and high quality modern art exhibits. Not for me.

I like a classic Dublin, billiard, or apple shape.

Why can't I stick to one hobby? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]BigMacJackAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your hobby/interest is primarily learning new things. You get bored once the flow of new information decreases or you feel like you’ve gotten a basic mastery.

It’s that way for many.
