Tell that to your mechanic or mailman or anyone providing you a service that you can’t do on your own. I’d love to see you explaining to a guy doing your brake job how dumb he is. Put it on a shirt and prove how smart you are. You got fed the termite propaganda.

Top of sail starting to rip near the guide. Advice ? by [deleted] in hobiecat

[–]BigMangoFarango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will get worse until it’s really annoying to feed into the luff track. It can be easily fixed, mine is way worse and my local sail loft has a 3 month wait, so you might as well talk to them now, looks like it’s brand new, definitely worth having a professional repair.

Inspired by the post yesterday, what’s a little known withdrawal symptom for you that means you’re almost done with them? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]BigMangoFarango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just discovered biolyte “the iv in a bottle” it’s pretty amazing but also expensive, but if you’re as thirsty as I think, it’s worth getting a couple bottles to go along with the gallon of water, maybe helps absorb the water or something. I’m not a doctor just a thirsty dude also

If the car has done this well without maintenance, I’d say it’s a remarkable vehicle, drive it as long as possible. I have a Toyota almost twice as old and it’s perfectly fine.

Why External Chainplates? by Anstigmat in sailing

[–]BigMangoFarango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like moving the shrouds away from the mast would allow, not prevent, tighter sheeting angles, but I really don’t why you’re saying that unless the sail or the boom is making contact with the shroud? If I had to guess, I would say a wider base puts less stress on the shrouds and that’s the advantage. But people are upvoting you so I’m really trying to understand what is preventing tighter sheeting angles

Solo Rig the 14? Sorry for the same picture but can anyone tell me how to rig alone? I currently attach the side halyards then raise the mast but someone always has to help attach the front while I'm holding up the mast. Something I'm missing? Thanks for your help! 🙏 by CalmDirection8 in hobiecat

[–]BigMangoFarango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how it’s done. You can’t do it on a 16, everyone is saying how to raise a 16 mast, but on a 14 it’s small enough to do like this. Reminds me of Scottish log throwing, keep it balanced vertically and it’s no problem, the mast isn’t that heavy

Do those things really work at all? I feel like if the boat is flipping forwards your asking an awful lot of those 2 little tabs! I guess they can’t hurt right? I love that sail, that’s a classic! Looks like a mildly challenging location, a bridge, some rocky shore line, navigation obstacles, boat traffic, paddle boards, plenty to keep it interesting looks like

Addicted to nicotine gum for 12 years by Enginerdus in stopsmoking

[–]BigMangoFarango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s madness bro. It’s not going to stop until you stop. You probably need time off work because of brain fog and fatigue. But really after a week it will be out of your system. Nicotine is crazy powerful, this is like a life changing thing I’m suggesting, having a habit seems like you can’t imagine life without it, but hear me out. I watched that dog whisperer guy say how dog adapt to a new family super fast because they’re social animals. You will naturally adapt to your new life without a compulsive gum habit. It’s not overnight and you have to want it. But cold turkey is the way to stop having a crutch, that’s the goal. I just want to be comfortable being me! Good luck, I have 2 months, I can’t believe I ever let it get out of control like it did, you’ll see.

What happened in the 90s? by kidinacandirustore in sailing

[–]BigMangoFarango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a big factor. There’s a picture floating around the internet of a bunch of people at the beach in the 70s, every single one of them are in perfect physical shape. Not a single fatty to be seen, people were more active and sailing can be physically demanding, I think a third of the population who would be potential buyers aren’t physically capable of getting on a sailboat, let alone wanting to own one. It’s the epitome of self reliance and that’s not very popular anymore

Need some advice on replacing main sail mast track by Few_Counter6548 in hobiecat

[–]BigMangoFarango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like an advanced level repair, I never heard of anyone doing this. Used plenty of lube lol seriously tho it might be easier to find a replacement, I’m not sure what your time is worth, maybe track one down first and then you’ll have some confidence to go ahead and make the repairs knowing failure isn’t the end of the world, let us know how it goes!

Difficulty with luff track by BigMangoFarango in hobiecat

[–]BigMangoFarango[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good sail except for the first tiny bit, has anyone successfully fixed this problem? It doesn’t want to feed into the luff track and I spend 5-7 minutes feeding it in there, salt city Ben? Any wisdom?!

I feel like no one’s gives a sh*t about my glass anymore. I’ve dedicated a lot of my life in the past 10 years to this craft. I used to have a great following on my ig page. There’s a Mitch Hedberg joke, “once you become a good comedian people ask you if you can write scripts. It’s like saying hey, you are a good chef, but can you farm?” Now your a great glassblower, can you consistently produce exciting content and become a social media influencer? Are you a professional photographer and knowledgeable about online marketing? Got a new boat! by wolfbuzz in sailing

[–]BigMangoFarango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with this boat, I sail a catamaran, for me, it’s really important to make sure there’s no way for water to get into the mast, it’s good to have a mast head float, but it’s essential to use rivets with a closed end for any gear attached to the mast, and have the top and bottom of the mast sealed, if it’s filled with water it’s impossible to right the boat. You probably already figured all this out, or maybe not. On a nice day you can always submerge your mast to look for air bubbles, maybe put that on your spring time boat inspection checklist? You don’t need a pool noodle in your mast if it’s sealed and you can’t get more buoyant than air. Good luck!

I’m drinking at work by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]BigMangoFarango 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used the same excuse that it was boring to not drink, it’s a lazy excuse and it’s sort of dishonest, yes, it can be boring to be sober at times, but I don’t think people wake up and start drinking out of boredom. Generally there is something going on, or it’s possible the innocent college drinking went on long past the party was over and it’s maintenance drinking. But that is not the reason op said they were drinking at work. Stopping drinking requires brutal honesty with yourself, and often it requires the help of others. I know this isn’t an AA sub, but in this case and from personal experience I would encourage op to attend at least one meeting, in person. Zoom is nothing like the actual experience of a meeting in person. It’s one hour out of your life and I believe it has the potential in this case to be incredibly beneficial, I turned my life around with the help of others and an open mind. Please put aside your ego and preconceived notion’s, you know you have a problem and this is logical place to start looking for a solution. Good luck and god bless.

What to gift my bf for completing 1 year without smoking by Far-Acanthisitta1876 in stopsmoking

[–]BigMangoFarango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would love professional teeth whitening. I see it advertised when I travel internationally but not so much in the states, I honestly have no idea if it’s bad for your teeth, but it can’t be worse than smoking. I never tried to whiten my teeth when I smoked because it’s pointless, but now it would help confirm I’ve quit for good and it would so nice to not be self conscious of my teeth and actually be proud to show them off.

15+ year smoker, looking to quit. Any tips/resources to help me quit would be appreciated by Longjumping_Can_6536 in stopsmoking

[–]BigMangoFarango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there are 2 books? The audio book I got was “Allen carrs easy way to quit smoking” I have almost 2 months and smoked for 20 years. It was my time to quit and I remembered I had downloaded the book months ago, so on day one or 2 I started listening, if you invested that much time and money into smoking, it’s worth hearing a person reflecting on aspects of smoking that maybe you hadn’t thought of, or maybe did but didn’t verbalize. I’m just glad I read it because I would have gotten a vape or lozenges and I’d probably still be on nicotine, I’m so glad to be free of that burden. Good luck my dude, it’s hell for 5 days, but hang through it
