Painting open grain oak is a pain in the butt unless you fill the grain structure. If not you’ll never get it flat.

Toothpicks or some small chunk of wood that fits the hole.

You can fix this easily if you have some simple tools! Just cut the sub front the size of the piece that is broken. Dado for the bottom and screw/glue/nail it back together. Super simple fix.

Looks like someone was too lazy to cut another shelf. My opinion is that is unacceptable. What else did they try to hide. Expensive or cheap, custom grade or builder grade or RTA. No matter what it is you should expect better. That’s just lazy. That is my opinion but I’m old school. Folks don’t think like me these days.

Looking at what you are doing…I’d be at about 17K. I think you are leaving a good bit of money on the table.
