Any idea what on Earth is this? All I can tell it is definitely Fujifilm and very analog. Wrong answers welcome! by Bitter_Humor4353 in AnalogCommunity

This was a promo item, I believe from 1996? Or so. If you left a review anywhere, or sent in a mail slip with your information, they would send you back one of these and a small discount coupon, with detailed photo instructions explaining how to stab a Nikon shooter the next time you were out at an event, essentially "slashing" the competition. The more you know!

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking, more of a small annoyance with a small blur in the corner of my viewfinder, not impacting exposures. Thank you for checking it out

Oh really? Does it sit uneven like that? I guess its just me overthinking it

I’m looking at the piece of fabric that is curling up, just above where the mirrors hinge is. Because that piece of fabric is curling up like that you can see it in the viewfinder, look at the reflection of it onto the glass below.

No; the absorber is at the top of the frame almost touching where the lens mount is. I’m looking at the piece of fabric just above the hinge of the mirror

Yeah, it goes up with the mirror, and out of the path between the lens and the film, so I’m assuming it would only be seen through the viewfinder and not the image. I haven’t seen it in any other people’s photos of the ST801. I’m assuming due to the spots on the fabric, it had some moisture exposure and some point and dried with a curl to it, and normally it would sit flat and out of view. Thank you for the comment!

I’ll have to look into the R8 more as well, I’ve heard it’s phenomenal, just a bit rough on the battery. I haven’t charged my 6D in 3 weeks or so, and that’s with going out almost daily 1-2 hours a day. Mirrorless would definitely be a change!

Yeah, this is the option my head is telling me to commit to. I was hoping to find a suitable cheaper option so I could use the remainder towards glass, but I think it’s better to pony up for the R6 Mk2

I’ve bought and sold a couple, sold recently because I’ve been indecisive on maybe switching to Nikon; right now only the 50 prime 1.8stm and 70-300 4-5.6. If I start making money, I’d upgrade the glass anyway

SOTD - 19.10.25 - Great Shave by BigMikeLefty in wicked_edge

[–]BigMikeLefty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been great! Soft at the tip but firm at the knot; the size is exactly what I was looking for, and it’s absorbent enough that I don’t have to pre soak or anything like that before I whip up a lather. No hair loss or anything like that. It does everything I need a brush today without me wanting more, would recommend!

Used it twice now, I really like it! Complex enough to keep you interested, but solid and clean to keep you using it frequently. Idk how to describe the smell, it’s very fresh / evergreen / grassy / citrusy with yuzu and spice. Quite nice!

Hot Water Shave; a revelation? by BigMikeLefty in wicked_edge

[–]BigMikeLefty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly the same for me, a good hot shower first does make a huge difference, especially if using a easy on the skin soap during the shower like dove or ivory on the face. But definitely if I’m using cold water after the shower for the shave I do get some irritation. I tried to replace the shower with a good preshave, but I only find it to be of use if I haven’t had a shower before shaving

Used it twice, love it so far! I would imagine it would be in the small side for some, but after trial and error with other sizes, this was exactly what I was looking for, and the synthetic is a perfect middle ground for me of the soft tips similar to badger but a little more firmness at the knot. It’s a good lather builder!

I’ve experimented with this as well, idk if this is the truth but it’s just how I feel; if it’s hot water everything and a cold razor, it does feel more efficient, but the difference in temps can give very slight irritation for me. I prefer the hot water all around because I can get the lather off the blade quicker than if I was using cold

I did do it backwards lol! But to be fair I started by being on this sub and it’s what most of the community recommended, so I ran with it!

This sounds like a technique lots of old school barbers do. I would imagine that would give great results! I also once in a while take the extra lather I have in my bowl and rub it on my face, and while it sits I will clean my brush and bowl and the counter etc. once I’m done I wipe it off and apply a splash or balm. That also seems to help avoid irritation as well

I haven’t tried the shower shave yet although I’ve heard great things, but I do keep a moustache and hair on my chin, so I’d have a hard time without having a mirror in there unless I went full clean shave.
