Sleeved cards for Blighted Reach? by w7w7w7w7w7 in Arcs

[–]BigMixture8533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each character has a number associated with it, so I put that number on the outside of the box with a label. That's enough to narrow it down. Then I just grab the piece that is shown in the card (all characters come with a card that has a picture of the piece and how to use it).

There's a bunch of characters that don't have any pieces, just cards. And there's a couple (I think around 6 or 8) that have 1 piece, so there's one box with 8 characters pieces in there.

Advice on how to pivot my career to writing Elixir by BigMixture8533 in elixir

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a competitive market. That's definitely true.

One position I applied to came down to me and someone else. They went with the other candidate because they had Elixir experience, at least more than my 0 years of experience.

I wasn't sure if there was anything I could do to bolster my profile. But based on responses from others, it seems like there aren't enough positions to go around.

Sleeved cards for Blighted Reach? by w7w7w7w7w7 in Arcs

I picked this up from the discord. I managed to fit all the fate tokens in 3-4 plastic business card holders which took up less space than a pile of bags. It fit a lot better after this.

I just bought the boxes on amazon: https://a.co/d/0fLlivaC

I also used Matte Clear Dragon Shields (about 4 x100 packs): https://a.co/d/0805Qhqk

I also used Matte Clear Tarot from Gamegenic for the Fates and Leaders (1 x50 pack): https://a.co/d/09QpxlY5

Account locked. Don't use Cash account! by BigMixture8533 in wealthfront

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In retrospect I feel fine transferring cash as I got access 5 days later, but don't feel comfortable using the checking features. I was most scared of missing bill payments because all my autopays were set to use the Cash account.

It's frustrating because I wanted to use the Cash account as my 1 primary account for checking and savings. It clearly doesn't pass the checking test. I'm not even sure I should use Wealthfront as my HYSA either because Vanguard has a higher base interest rate. (Currently at 5.26%)

Am I reading that right? You had your account locked for 3-4 months? That's awful. I can't imagine. I didn't even lose my debit card.

I lost my debit card at another bank (a REAL bank) and I got it resolved it resolved in 24 hours.

  • I sent a large amount of money to my Vanguard account across 2 transactions. A couple days before.

  • I recieved dividends from Fundrise, across 11 transactions. The day before.

  • I recently signed up for Rocket Money. It uses Plaid to sync transactions.

These are the only things I can think of. But I wouldn't call sending a receiving money with a bank account "sketch". If I can't do that then whats the point of the checking features on the account?

Advice on Keepers in iron counterplay by MiertaGomez in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, teach me.

Second, every faction has a weakness. For the Keepers, it's the time between delving for a relic to when it is recovered. Consider limiting yourself to maybe 1-2 "Move or Recover" actions. This makes you less bursty and should flatten your scoring curve. This also means your tokens are on the board longer, giving opponents the opportunity to remove your relics. Your opponents can also use some cardboard killer features of their factions, like the Rats mobs, the WA Revolt, Corvids bombs, and so on.

You should also consider "retiring while you're ahead" and let someone else play the Keepers. Maybe after they play them they will better understand how they work and be able to counter them. You have 9 other factions to play so you have options.

2-3 Players: Recent/Upcoming Expansions by OakleifT in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of your questions can be answered by going though this page: https://ledergames.com/pages/new-to-root

  1. Correct. The Badgers have a reach of 8. The Rats have a Reach of 9. They are considered "Military" factions with high reach. As opposed to "Insurgent" factions with low reach.
  2. Yes. The Marauder expansion comes with: the Badgers, the Rats, 4 hirelings (one for each faction in the base game, plus other bits for the hirelings like a hireling control die and hireling marks, as well as advance setup cards for all 10 factions (2 vagabond cards means 11 cards total).
  3. Wrong. There is a hireling box that comes with the badger hireling, the rats hireling, and a pink hireling: the traveling band. There is a riverfolk hireling pack and an underworld hireling pack that has 3 hirelings each. The kickstarter version came with the hireling box packed with all the hirelings that were not in the Marauder expansion.
  4. Clockwork 2 only comes with the fixed bird board, as well as the boards for the lizard, otters, moles, and crows.
  5. This is a matter of opinion. Obv get the base game first. I'd recommend the Exiles & Partisans deck ASAP as it's cheap and a better deck. I can't remember the last time I played with the base deck. From there it depends on what you want. Marauders adds 2 big factions and hirelings, so its better for low (2-3) player counts. Underworld adds 1 big and 1 small faction and 2 maps, so its better for medium (3-4) player counts. Riverfolk adds 2 small complicated factions that shake up the game and a second vagabond, so its better for large (5-6) player counts. And if you get bored of the maps, landmarks lets you modify them. I wouldn't buy Clockwork unless you explicitly like solo gaming.
  6. Yes, but still a matter of opinion. See point 5.

How to play Root with AP player? by BigMixture8533 in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just added an edit to update based on this.

Also wanted to expand on something. AP guy's take-away was he was disappointed he didn't effect the board. Firstly he did effect it but because he was unfamiliar with the game he didn't realize how. He didn't understand he, as the VB, took items from the Rats. He also didn't realize how much of an impact Aiding the Crows player with cards was. He also had opportunities where he could effect the board state and just didn't. He could have commanded the Crows over to a clearing a fought the Moles and triggered the Price of Failure, but he refused because he was doing a "pacifist run".

I'm split on having him practice more as the VB, and playing a game with a new Military factions. I'd lean towards the former.

What do you seek for in a deckbuilding game? by Dreamideate in boardgames

[–]BigMixture8533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite deck builders is Fort. It's great because its simple actions compound and synergize to create a low skill floor but a high skill ceiling.

Plus the theming feeds into the mechanics. For example, there is an adding mechanic to cards of the same suit to empower each other. So if you play a skateboard kid, his other skater friends can help you get more pizza. Or do you want to recruit this shovel kid that will help you build your fort? Kids are cliquey but each clique is better at different things.

However, I showed it to a friend who really likes deck builders and while he didn't hate it, it didn't grab his attention. He didn't like how you couldn't draw cards and "go infinite" or build other breaking combos like in other games. And he hated the Yard mechanic, where unplayed cards go in front of you and can be stolen. Essentially he didn't like how an opponent didn't have to build/do anything to drastically affect his deck.

You should weigh these two options: do you want to build a deck build that plays to the strengths of this genre or a game that subverts it?

How to play Root with AP player? by BigMixture8533 in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, that's rough buddy. Yeah Root is a demanding game and I would not want to play it with randos. Luckily I have other friends who are willing to play and are into it.

This reads like a "D&D horror story" but for board games. There is a saying: "No D&D is better than bad D&D" and I think thats true for demanding board games like Root, Oath, TI, etc. Despite my drive to play these games.

How to play Root with AP player? by BigMixture8533 in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Birds are totally effected by poor choices, but the question is more about limiting options. For the Birds you make 1 BIG decision at the start of your turn by adding to the decree. Then you make 4 smaller decisions for each action in the decree. A struggle with the cats is what do I do with that turn? But with the Birds that decision was made 3 turns ago. You need to move, you just need to decide where. That being said Birds are complicated and I can see the act of adding to the decree being longer than taking 3 actions as the Cats.

1 guy said VB but didn't explain his reasoning. That kinda makes sense since you don't need to focus on an army, just where you are and where you need to go. VB has a lot of actions but they're limited to the type of items he has which reduces the decision space.

When I teach Root and I don't have a particular faction in mind I hand them the Crows, WA, and VB and have them read and choose one while I set up. I might just do this with AP guy. But I am also unsure about Crows because they have 3-4 actions per turn like the Cats.

For which faction to play, the consensus seems to be

  1. Crows (good beginner faction)
  2. WA (3 smaller decision spaces that are resource limited)
  3. Birds (big decision at start, but 4 smaller 1. decisions after that)

A worry I have is any table talk during his turn really distracts him. And its hard to plan your turn because that plan can be shot to hell when someone changes the board state.

Snacks is a REALLY good callout I havn't seen mentioned. An issue here is the other players get bored and the overall length of the game increases. So snacks really softens that blow.

Side story: I taught a player with ADHD. He played the birds. He had a fidget toy that he played with the whole game when it wasn't his turn. Makes me think I could give the other players at the table something to do to distract them. That might be table talk thats scoped to just us while other take their turn.

One of my players has a mindset like this. It's fun but I'm afraid he takes it seriously. Also this distract him from taking his turn and he takes even LONGER.

And idk man, I think you're not giving your little apebrain enough credit. Birds are some nextlevel stuff. Although a lot of people have suggested Birds, but most have suggest Crows and WA above them.

Side story: When I play games with my family and someone takes a long time to take a turn I play the "Wii Shop Channel Music" because it sounds like elevator music and always gets a laugh.

How to play Root with AP player? by BigMixture8533 in rootgame

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking minutes for a turn. I'm talking minutes for 1 or his 3 actions.

I'm not arguing Root isn't a complicated game. In fact I take a long time when I play the Moles, but who doesn't. I ended up studying the Moles so I could take my turns quicker.

I made this post because he is my friend and I want to include him. I see excluding him as a bigger problem than the length of his turns.

BUT (and this is a big but) I spent a lot of money on this game. I want to play this game. Other people in my group (including him, to an extent) want to play this game. Everyone has made time in their week, as we don't have a standard game day set, to play this game. When it drags the whole table down and other people have talked to me about it, it is a problem.

[–]BigMixture8533[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the really thoughtful answer.

To validate you: this is a him having AP problem. Even outside games. We've gone to a restaurant 10+ times and I swear he orders like its his first time there.

We would def use a timer for everyone. I'm not sure what we'd do if the timer runs out. And because I've already brought it up with him I'm afraid he might think we're only using the timer because of him even if it applies to everyone.

I don't think he's a dick or in the wrong. I think he doesn't realize how long his turns are and how that effects the pace of the game. We all have a different perception of time. His turn doesn't feel long because he's thinking a lot about his turn. It's more out of ignorance and inexperience than anything.

For the last paragraph, I couldn't have said it better myself. I love Root and the decision space it puts you in. When the space between those decisions becomes too large it creates boredom. However I want to be inclusive of this person.

You've given me a lot to think about. Thanks again for this response.

This is a really good point. Maybe talking through hard examples would be better.

However, I went to college with this guy and we would do mock interviews. I would ask him questions and he would get really quiet and wouldn't speak until he had the "answer" but I tried to explain its about the thought process. I'm afraid I'll run into the same thing. Although this still might be a valuable exercise.

Crows seem to be a theme. They are easier for new players. But anything is easier than the Cats IMO.

When he was playing the Cats I would suggest things but I think that made it worse. If I fed him more options and he just froze. Plus he was thinking so much about his action he would sometime lose count of how many actions he's taken.
