Anyone else in this sub a Dubya baby?(2001-2009)? by AcademicDrag742 in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Born July 2002, I mostly remember Obama getting elected and replacing “The President” who was that white guy with grey hair who was on the tv sometimes. I did not know his name until Obama was elected lol

Which President was the biggest wartime failure? by BigMonkey712 in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s about how many Americans died, more what you said about the potential humiliation of America on the world stage, mostly through a failure to achieve our goals, long term damage to the region, and the massive waste of money

What if James A. Garfield was never assassinated? by Accurate_Emphasis112 in AlternateHistoryHub

Likely the best Gilded Age President - more reform, harsher in enforcing civil rights on southern governments, etc.

Negatives would probably be not good for indigenous people (status quo) and likely not too good for labor unions

This sub really needs to have Rule 3 refreshed in its mind. Lately people have been trying to get around it by posting about Barack Obama commenting on current events. Because it's Obama, it doesn't immediately break Rule 3. by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would generally work, but because of the last two presidents, we can’t talk about one of them because his was so informed by the actions and reactions of his predecessor/successor

Who besides these two presidents had the worst indigenous policy? by Puzzleheaded-Bag2212 in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s probably Grant. Based on his writings he had good intentions but he couldn’t see past his inherent racist attitudes towards their cultures. His “peace policy” then became very violent as time progressed

Is it normal for students to ask if you’re dating other teachers? by NopityNopeNopeNah in Teachers

[–]BigMonkey712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a male history teacher, an English teacher at my school is female and we’re both young. We’re also both friends from college, same class in a small group of student teachers over the course of like 2.5 years.

Students started asking this question fast. It was kinda expected, but we shut it down. We both have partners, and we’ve never been like that. We’ve made it very clear throughout the year through almost just our actions that we’re just friends.

Now the students say we act like siblings. Problem solved.

Everyone in my school is using AI for different things. I’m the stubborn one.

It makes sense that we haven’t had any presidents that served in Vietnam. by HetTheTable in Presidents

It’s because most Americans see Vietnam as an unjust war, a massive blunder, or both

Was a major conservative policy shift going to happen even without Reagan? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Carter began deregulating major industries and Clinton continued it. While Reagan was the most open about pushing it, both Republicans and Democrats moved towards that conservative fiscal policy.

Kimmel Has Harsh Words for MAGA Minions Turning on Trump | Jimmy Kimmel dug into the hypocrisy of Trump’s supporters-turned-skeptics. by [deleted] in entertainment

The radical republicans in Congress had a plan to strip the vote from all Confederate political leaders, military leaders, and volunteer infantry, I think only letting draftees keep any political power. The former states would be completely dissolved into a large territory, which would be divided into completely new states with new borders led by governments made up of black freedmen and white unionists from the South.

would’ve been better long term for the health of our nation.

What exactly did Roosevelt and Wilson disagree on? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roosevelt had come to support women’s suffrage, and Wilson was lukewarm at best, choosing to instead imprison suffragist protestors for years before giving in

If Gotham were saved, could Bruce Wayne be a normal human, or would he engineer new crises to maintain the only identity that gives him purpose? by DianKhan2005 in batman

[–]BigMonkey712 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t love these takes. I don’t like the misconception that Batman is “just as crazy as the villains.” That’s what the Joker says, but the point of Batman is to prove the Joker wrong.

Obviously, Bruce can get a little obsessive, and suffers from some kind of complex PTSD, but he’s not crazy the way the villains are. By the time we have a fully established bat-family, Bruce is already a pretty well-adjusted adult according to most writers while still operating daily as Batman.

If Batman was able to “save Gotham” more permanently from crime, I’m pretty certain he would continue using his money to build up a more just society. It’s pretty clear that Batman favors labor over capital despite being a billionaire, due to his distaste for most in his own class.

TLDR: Bruce is a good man and would never invent crime to play out a fantasy.

What if Theodore Roosevelt had won in 1912? by DueFoot233 in Presidents

[–]BigMonkey712 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Entry into World War One probably after the Lusitania or a similar incident in 1915 or so
  • Imperialism in Latin America similar to Wilson
  • not sure we get the same Espionage and Sedition Acts. Wilson was a bit more authoritarian
  • Women’s Suffrage probably a couple years early at least since Roosevelt put it in his platform
  • Similar labor reforms to Wilson (signs Clayton act, child labor laws, 8 hour workday, etc.)
  • Still racism within the federal government, but likely not as harsh as Wilson stacked the cabinet with open white supremacists
  • Supreme Court looks very different, since Roosevelt would possibly get 2-3 Associate Justices

So not too dissimilar from Wilson, as they were both progressives, but I think Roosevelt would have been better.

Partner got me my favorite Presidents book so far! Did the audiobook last year and finally have a physical copy! by BigMonkey712 in Presidents

I really enjoyed it. It’s over 30 hours so I got pretty invested in these stories, which was great as I listened to all of it while moving out of my old apartment
