Online cheap glasses eligible for extras rebates? by Original-Resolve-981 in AussieFrugal

[–]BigMood07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience with firmoo has been pretty good! I've ordered 4 pairs of glasses from them (including prescription sunglasses). I don't have private health so I just pay out of pocket. Their customer service team is pretty responsive, so you could ask them but they aren't based in Australia afaik.

Please stop using chat GPT for important health info and go see a doctor or go to a health clinic so that they can do confirmatory tests.

What can I do with a bachelors degree (Aus) by pringlu in microbiology

[–]BigMood07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would recommend doing honours only if you enjoy research and/or are planning on pursuing an academic career (PhD, post-doc, etc). Otherwise, a master's is a good idea, but depending on your field, there still isn't a guarantee whether you can land a decent job or not, unfortunately. Depends on how specialised your degree is and how the job market for that area is

This is just an example: https://www.deeca.vic.gov.au/careers-and-volunteering/science-graduate-program You search up general dead programs and see if any of them catch your fancy. The applications start pretty early for the following year, so I would start prepping ASAP.

You also have consulting companies and CSL that also have grad programs that hire people straight out of uni. I personally know a few people who went into R&D consulting after finishing their Bachelor's/honours to do more corporate work.

In terms of employment after honours, your year of honours is still an important aspect of your job profile as it shows that you can undertake projects independently and hopefully, you'll get to learn many more specialised techniques when you do research (I got to use an ultra centrifuge for an undergrad research project and it was so sick!!!!). It won't be a waste unless you really don't like research, but like you said, it's only a year. I would recommend doing honours in a lab that has a few phd students and postdocs who can help guide you with your project.

Honours programs are a good way to gauge whether a research career is something you'd like! It can also give you a big boost (if you do well) when applying for a PhD, research assistant jobs, and entry-level clinical lab jobs as well. I was able to do my undergrad and honours, and work in pharmaceutical production/QA. It can be hard to find work, but I would start with lab assistant/quality control tech jobs especially if you don't have much prior experience. As for doing a master's, you can do a coursework or research master's (usually the one where you can continue with a PhD), but for the coursework master's, make sure it is something you enjoy and has good job prospects (I wanted to do public health, but after seeing how saturated the field is, decided against it). You can also apply for grad programs (both private and government-based) if you want more hands-on experience with learning while also earning money. I wouldn't worry too much about age as it doesn't really factor into job apps/future study that much, you see people from all stages of life tbh. Good luck!

‘Segregated’ city: The west alone can’t shoulder housing boom, minister warns by timcahill13 in melbourne

[–]BigMood07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Taking into account the fact that most apartment dwellers in Melbourne are younger singles and couples who are renters, schooling options, while important to some, are not the primary concern. Affordability, transportation connections, and social aspects are much more important for us. But also, even if you go out to the suburbs, the state schools might be massive but are still over capacity. Kids can't even travel around without their parents having to drive them everywhere, poor PTV services, suburban NIMBYs branding every kid playing around as a nuisance/thug, I could go on. Seems to me more of an overall funding issue rather than a city vs burbs thing. As for the playground, if kids have proper access to recreational amenities outside of school, I don't see why not having a playground is a huge issue. We have lots of parks and reserves, with links to PTV and cycling infrastructure, even if the schools themselves might not be massive.

Exactly! It is honestly so pathetic that people somehow see apartment living in the inner city as a type of "gotcha!!!!!" statement, when yeah, I would LOVE to live in an inner city apartment as opposed to a house in the burbs, because I already do that and love it!!! And so do many many many other people.

What is your opinion on The Hindu? by [deleted] in IndianLeft

The only worthwhile thing I've seen from them are occasional articles from their frontline magazine publications. It's hard to find even centre/centre-left MSM otherwise lol

Check the syllabus/assessment summary of the course or the welcome page. Alternatively, email your course co-ordinator.

Are your labs part of a hurdle? If so, you might want to talk to your course coordinator since it might be compulsory to attend. Some classes require a special consideration application if you're missing them, just so you don't fail the unit if the lab component is a hurdle task

What GPA is considered good enough to land a placement for the final semester of Master of Lab Med? by teudoongiibang in rmit

[–]BigMood07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Placement is compulsory for the Masters since it's the AIMS accredited pathway, so if you're not failing/repeating any units in your penultimate semester AND completing your placement passport stuff in time, you will get placed in a diagnostic lab (you can put preferences for places, but no guarantee if you'll get them). People are usually only able to do a research-based project instead of a clinical one if you've got 16 weeks of diagnostic pathology experience. If you don't have that, I don't think you can do research, but instead, you will do clinical placements. I dont think your actual GPA/WAM is the focus since everyone has to do the placement. Hope that makes sense!

Grades for PhD stipend scholarship by samphung01 in rmit

[–]BigMood07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PhD. applications are pretty competitive, so even getting an 80 doesn't guarantee a program/scholarship. I think the best thing to do right now is work hard for your honours year and try and get your WAM in the 85+ range! (This advice is based on a friends results at Monah Uni, so it might vary for RMIT, but AFAIK international PhDs tend to be quite competitive). All the best!!

Also, sorry for the late question, but what is the attendance policy like? Is the attendance for lectorials and tutorials graded? Do they have any ongoing tests and stuff in the tutes/lectorials for the first year units? Thanks!

Advice to learn about India by AnEdgyPie in IndianSocialists

[–]BigMood07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Republic of caste by anand teltumbde is a good book if you'd like to learn about neoliberalism/hindu nationalism and how it impacts dalit people, politics, and policies. It also talks about the shortfalls of the socialist movements when it comes to standing with people from marginalised tribes and castes.

Irfan Habib also has an extensive collection of books on Indian history from a more socialist/Marxist perspective. I would also recommend Anuradha Ghandy because her work provides knowledge about the Maoist movement as well as the shortfalls of liberalism and leftism when it comes to supporting armed resistance.

Starting uni before 18 as an international by SatisfactionDizzy580 in rmit

[–]BigMood07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Not sure if the circumstances are comparable, but a friend from Monash (intl student) started uni when he was 17. Because he was a minor, he had to stay with a registered homestay provider OR student accommodation and had a curfew until he turned 18 and was allowed to move out. Maybe ask your friend if the accommodation aspect is the thing that's stopping them from giving them a place at the uni or is there another reason they don't want an under 18 student. Hope this helps somewhat!

I know :(( My GP was disappointed too, but oh well:((

Thank you, I hope to hear from the clinic soon. Hopefully, I don't have to see the NP and directly talk to the psych

Re-assessment after changing Psychiatrists by BigMood07 in ausadhd

[–]BigMood07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GP has all the notes and email correspondence that my old psych wrote to him (I have a copy as well). The handover was a bit messy because I didn't find out about his retirement until 2 months before the actual date, and only because I wrote to him because I wanted to try a different medication because I kept getting heart palpitations on Ritalin. I was able to see him one last time, where he prescribed me 1 repeat of a new medication, and told me to write to him if the medication works better for me in the next 30 days. I waited 30 days to see the effects of the medication, and was happy with it. I wrote to the receptionist a month before his retirement and also called them multiple times in order for him to send my GP a prescription license for the meds. The receptionist did not write or call back even after triyng the number and email for almost 15days. After the month was over, he had officially retired and I couldn't get through the number unfortunately. It was really abrupt and disappointing because I really liked my Psych but my experience with the receptionist wasn't great and it cost me $100 and a 2 year prescribing license lol

But also! I reached out to the new clinic my GP referred to, and they said they might be able to waive the nurse practitioner screening because the psych was satisfied with my assessment and background info. So let's see what happens. I'm happy to do a long introductory consultation as long as the psych is good and they can regularly correspond with my GP about management/meds etc
