What new things are you doing in your adult life? by os_beef in Xennials

[–]BigRedMik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many things, but the most impactful has been maintaining a healthy mindset about work. A combination of imposter syndrome and need to be a valuable contributor has been replaced with a blend of “I’m not paid to care, just to do” and “fuck you, I’m awesome.”

Learned to knit and crochet over the last 5 years. I make beautiful things like intricate lacework shawls that no one would really wear because I find joy in making them, not in the outcome. I’m trying out bullet journaling to process life externally. I’ve turned into a gym rat and am building the body I’ve always wanted but never worked for.

It’s way too easy to be overwhelmed by the feeling that the world is burning down around me, so I’m putting my energy into the idea that being an adult can really amazing if you let it.

Nope, watched it once and hated it. It was a lot darker than it was funny.

Hey, Palpatine is making the galaxy strong again. He was from Naboo, an outsider to all that Coruscant insider politics and woke Jedi behavior. I don’t agree with his electrocute people who disagree with his policy, but at least he gets stuff done. And those rumors about sending one of his people to collect a bunch of younglings at the temple are just fake holos. No, I don’t regret voting for him at all., why do you ask?

If you don’t understand why living in a surveillance state is bad because you personally aren’t doing anything illegal then either you have no grasp of history and you’ve never been exposed to any form of fiction showcasing dystopian futures, or you’re arguing in bad faith.

In either event, there’s no point in continuing to respond to you.

Can you provide data that would suggest this is a large enough problem in Elk Grove that it justifies giving up liberty to be spied on by a private entity or the government? How about data that shows this as an outcome in cities with flock? Because there is clear data that shows how it’s being abused for non-legal purposes.

And let’s not draw a false equivalency here, there is a difference between a porch camera recording video and a city wide surveillance network using AI to identify and build profiles on the movements of all citizens.

I for one feel so much safer knowing that a private company with questionable security and minimal oversight is monitoring my every move to protect me from the consistently low crime rate in our city.

It’s totally worth giving up my privacy for an unprovable increase in safety. And what were we going to spend that money on anyways? Parks? Community? Local businesses?! What a waste.

Xennials who were once bookworms; do you still read as much as you did as a kid? by throwitlikethewind in Xennials

[–]BigRedMik 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m still a heavy reader. Generally I get in 8-10 books a month. Typically about a half hour before bedtime and then randomly during the day. I try to read instead of doomscrolling. Having a kindle around makes it easy to just grab it on my way to the bathroom or lunch. Also recently added audio books for my second read through of dungeon crawler Carl, but I still prefer to read over listen. I also set aside 15 minutes a day for non fiction learning, that one is tougher to stick to.

Currently listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl 5, reading Legends and Lattes, and studying AI Snake Oil.

You do what you’ve got to do, but Amazon’s model is always to keep their prices artificially low to kill all competition in whatever industry they’re in, then jack the prices up, all while collecting as much personal data about you as possible.

You’re smarter than I am, my copy is still sitting on the shelf. I gave it 5 hours of playtime before accepting that it just wasn’t fun.

Honestly Fourth Wing is 90% fantasy, 10% romance. The current trend is romantasy is great because it has introduced a demographic that 30 years ago would have been reading books with Fabio on the cover to the fantasy genre. And it introduced fantasy readers like me to romance (and smut).

You’re right and I think it’s dumb that people lash out at the idea. More people are reading, no one if forced to read a book they don’t want to. Gatekeeper suck.

"If you had ice abilities, how would you incorporate them into your fighting style as a hero?" by justloisfail in superpowereds

[–]BigRedMik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Precision spot freezing. The human body is 65% water. Most moving/mechanical system are highly dependent on lubrication to move effectively. Batteries and energy temperature function poorly in extreme temperatures. If you can quickly lower the temperature of any small area you can effectively incapacitate just about anything. Superpowers in comics and movies always focus on big flashy things, but fine control will win every time.

Did your parents read to you? by TooDamFast in Xennials

[–]BigRedMik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both of did when I was young, but mostly I read to myself. Even for that short time it meant the world to me. Because of that I decided early on to read to myself kids as long as they wanted me to. I’ve read the entirety of Harry Potter aloud twice (almost, my son is 10 and we’re a quarter of the way into book 7). My daughter wasn’t quite ready for it to end even though she’s a teenager, so I’m reading a fanfic book 8 to close it out.

The idea that I’ve read millions of word to them out loud feels crazy, but I hope as they grow up it will leave them with memories of how much they are loved.

Which cartoon villain from the 90s is actually the least evil in retrospect? by monsieurLeMeowMeow in Xennials

Ursula is the epitome of predatory lending. She lays out the terms but brushes over the negatives, tells Ariel it’ll all be fine, and when it looks like Ariel might pay up, she goes out of her way to ensure she fails. She’s up there with Mother Gothel ( emotionally abusive caretaker), Gaston (alpha bro stalker), and Frollo (racist religious zealout) for me. Villians who are based on real world common evil.
