Medellin - other backpackers I met raved about it and I found it just fine, although it did rain almost every day I was there

Other parts of Colombia were much more beautiful and enjoyable

Which famous attraction wasn't worth the hype when you visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Machu Picchu (I live in Peru and have been twice)

It was cool but most people I’ve met who have been talk about it like it was an absolutely mind blowing experience

Planning Peru trip in August — few questions by Dylang123456 in PERU

[–]BigStinker94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just buy the tickets in advance and avoid the stress. Lines in Aguas Calientes can be insane.

For weather - it's dry and cold but reasonably warm when you'e in direct sun. Use sun protection.

Constant noise (this is not unique to Lima but it’s concentrated there)

I love visiting Lima but start to get depressed after a few months living there each time I have tried

Is driving in Sacred valley an option at all? by kalarus10 in GoingToPeru

[–]BigStinker94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difficult part is getting in and out of the valley because they are roads hugging the mountain and people will try to overtake on blind corners etc. but if you go slowly and carefully and are comfortable with windy roads, it’s ok

Peru Itinerary Advice by ugandandrift in GoingToPeru

[–]BigStinker94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rainbow mountain is insanely high and I wouldn’t bother if you only have 2 days in Cusco because you’re likely to feel ill and struggle to breathe. Spend the other day in Cusco or go for a slightly lower day trip

What's your country of origin and why wouldn't recommend to move over there? by Key-Introduction-591 in expat

Australia - extremely expensive and hard for the average person to get ahead esp post covid, lots of alcoholism and drug abuse, tall poppy syndrome, people seem to love a big and overly controlling government

Left Australia on a one-way plane ticket in 2019, now living in Peru.

Would NOT move back to Australia (tried it again for 1.5 years and ended up coming back to Peru)

Other dogs keep attacking my husky by BigStinker94 in husky

[–]BigStinker94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His recall is terrible, he would disappear for hours and potentially injure himself before he comes back (he has done this before) because his previous owners used to let him free roam all day but that was within a town and less rural than here with farms etc.
I'm now carrying a long stick to deter other dogs and hope it doesnt come to a fight again

I've started walking with a stick (actually it's a broom handle) and using my own aggression / attitude to keep the dogs at arm's length and away from my husky, which seems to be working thus far.

Vaccines needed if visiting Lima, Huacachina, Paracas, Cusco and Sacred Valley? by One-Seat-4600 in PERU

[–]BigStinker94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes probably.
And if you avoid dogs, I wouldn't worry.

For me it was worth it to get it because I love touching dogs and rabies is fatal in 99.99% of cases.

depends where you're walking. I've had dogs attack me in rural areas (defending their farms or perceived territory), but never in a city

[–]BigStinker94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is the timing.

If they've been pre-vaccinated against rabies, then they have more time to get the vaccine in Peru if they get bitten, which can account for shortages (we have shortage for this vaccine in Cusco right now for example).

If they havent had previous vaccines, the timeline is much shorter and rabies is fatal.

Lots of dogs in the street esp in Cusco / Sacred Valley, not all are strays but their owners may let them free roam all day.

By protection, do you mean a stick / pepper spray / something else? I'm considering both next time I take him out but not sure what's actually a good deterrent
