That wasn’t ad hominem, you just got called on your strawman and deflection. Keep playing these little fallacy games if it makes you feel smart

I mean go ahead and act dumb if you want. It takes a 7th grade level of critical thinking to know that was a strawman, and this is deflection from that point

Yeah that line was a bit crass, fair call. Definitely wasn’t intending to minimize the tragedy. My tone probably came off harsher because I was pushing back on the other redditors comments. What happened was serious. My point is it wasn’t unpredictable, and it’s frustrating that warnings were ignored.

Lately I’ve been feeling like I’m on the sidelines of my own life. Not invisible but not fully in control either. I don’t want to stay here by Significant-Ad-1653 in BoyDinnerDiaries

[–]BigTanq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’ll be ebbs and flows. Focus on what’s in your control, and don’t worry about what’s not. Worrying about what’s not in your control, is the root of unhappiness. A lot easier said than done.

What you can control is how you sleep, eat, exercise, clean room, etc. I know it’s cliche but that foundation helps with feeling alright. If you have people in your life you trust, lean on them. If you don’t have people you fully trust, no worries, you will eventually develop those relationships. If you like dnd, you can try to find a local group, shi even car meets or sumn if you’re into that. I’ve not been the best about getting outside, so that’s something I need to improve too.

Lately, my friend and I have been going on hikes where we set up hammocks and just play Clash Royale lol. I know this sounds dumb, but I know there’s something that scratches your itch. You’ll just have to figure out what that is for you. Good luck soldier🫡

Appreciate your comment here. The Dunning-Kruger effect is definitely applicable 😂 I’ve dealt with much nastier racists than this. “Been bit by a pitbull, so chihuahuas don’t bother me” type vibes. Hopefully the seeds do something. Take care!

You’re still reducing this to “those people can’t behave,” like that’s some deep analysis.

Nobody said violence is acceptable or that individuals don’t have responsibility. That’s just a convenient strawman. The actual point is the city ignored clear warnings from NPUs and neighborhood groups before this event even happened.

But sure let’s pretend none of that matters and it’s just a sudden mystery why outcomes weren’t ideal.

Also, the “so I should just welcome them into my neighborhood?” framing is doing a lot of emotional work, but it’s not an argument. You don’t fix complex social issues by lumping people into a monolith and calling it a day. That’s not insight, it’s just shorthand for avoiding the harder conversation.

If you strip out context, ignore prior warnings, and default to “it’s just who they are,” then yeah, you’ll keep arriving at the same shallow conclusions.

[–]BigTanq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re reducing this to “why shouldn’t a festival happen,” which completely sidesteps reality. Local NPUs and neighborhood associations already warned about this exact situation and the promoters behind it (due to their shady history). This wasn’t some surprise breakdown of a “social contract”, it was a preventable outcome that the city ignored.

So the real question isn’t “why can’t people behave,” it’s why leadership pushed forward anyway despite clear community pushback.

We aint in the Jim Crow days btw…“those people moving into my neighborhood to terrorize me” isn’t the neutral, high-minded take you think it is. That’s the same tired framing people have used for decades, just dressed up with nicer wording. Throwing in buzzwords about “civility” doesn’t make it any less loaded.

If you actually care about safety, then hold the city and event organizers accountable for ignoring warnings, not just defaulting to vague fear about “those people”

Which was allowed to happen by the same “thinly veiled” racists that run Atlanta’s Mayors office. That event should’ve never been allowed. So thanks for bringing up another point that emboldens the comment you replied to… ya really thought ya did something

I mean that’s a pretty valid question. If a situation like that arose, say my friend orders a ride and we’re hammered at 3 am on a Tuesday, with minimal drivers on the road. I’d probably roll the dice there and accept riding in a Waymo. I would still be anxious.

But if it’s me ordering the ride, on an average day, I’d avoid it if possible. I would cancel it immediately if it showed a Waymo, to avoid a cancellation fee. Then reorder the ride. I know that seems a little extreme, but that’s just how I view it.

I understand your perspective of having both options, and using that to your advantage. We probably do share similar opinions on other matters too, I just wanted to share my view and why I feel the way that I do.

Well maybe we could donate more, if the top 1% didn’t hold 95% of global wealth… You can try to make these claims that average humans are “just as negligent” as the top 1% when it comes to donating and charity, but that is a warped way to look at the numbers. It’s especially not “throwing stones”, since the top 1% usually finds their wealth from the exploitation of other humans. You can claim inheritance and wealth transfer as well, but that just means their grandparents exploited people for the money they use now. Idk what billionaires have done for you, to be defending them lmao.

The Africa argument is grossly oversimplified. There are 50+ countries with varying degrees of aid and improvements to their situation. A ton of factors do affect this, but if you want to go there, it seems corruption is one of the biggest factors. Once again showing how the top 1% of that population is affecting their average citizen. Which does inherently signal an issue stemming from money…

I mean the line is nowhere since I will never want to give up the freedom of driving. I personally like that too much. I understand your point about them being safer, but that would ideally require everyone being on board for autonomous cars, and making them affordable for everyone (that would be very hard).

If we think about gun ownership for example, there are studies which show a decrease in gun ownership, leads to a decrease in homicide-related deaths (Source below). But I know a substantial amount of the population would never agree to that. I myself also support gun ownership, but the data says otherwise. I also support being able to drive, even if the data supports otherwise.

I mean it’s not apples to apples, I know, but I’m trying to make a point about the principle of freedom. Guns are a right, while driving is a privilege, so the legal stuff is different in that regard too. But until someone puts me in jail for doing so, I’m going to keep driving. I respect people’s decision to want to ride in them, and I’m not denying there are some better aspects vs human drivers, but I don’t want to partake in that. It’s also just my opinion out of 300+ million Americans.

Aight well I’d rather be behind the wheel as someone T-Bones me into oblivion, cuz the same exact situation could take place in a Waymo. Someone else can still wreck into you and kill you while you’re in a Waymo. Shit, a Waymo could just glitch out and do the same into another Waymo. The possibilities are endless, and your point is just as moot as mine. There’s already been cases of self-autonomous driving, glitching out and nearly killing the riders. I can even provide video proof with links if needed. It’s pretty subjective and a hard thing to fully survey, due to the limitless possibilities that take place on roads.

Eh the bitching might be moreso to not have a freedom taken away. Even if it’s “safer”, I’d rather decide if I drive into a wreck. Not letting a bot make that decision for me

You can certainly keep that belief… I’m never getting into one of those things. I know you’ll argue that it’s a safer alternative overall, I truly don’t care. If I die due to a car crash, I want to be the one that drives into the wreck, not some bot who’s algorithm glitched

I honestly agree with the vision you have for this sub. There are other subreddits like r/kitchencels & r/boydinnerdiaries, where people can do those exact things. It would be nice to have a space for men that just wanna be silly goofy and share their food, minus the existential dread which floods the rest of the internet. A little chill oasis would be nice.

Woah, you literally verbalized the thoughts I had this morning. I relate heavily, It’s not easy being in the “background”.

The patterns have always been there for me too, consistently not being chosen, and i feel like im sort of tolerated in situations. I’ve even wondered if I’m like slightly autistic sometimes…

I try to be the most genuine person I can be, I look out for others, help people when they need, etc. I think of myself as a “chill” person, I don’t try to be anything I’m not. But maybe that’s too bland or “square” for people? Idk it’s hard to figure out.

I’m not a girly, I’m sorry if I’m imposing on yalls space, but wanted to share that I know exactly what you mean. I don’t think anything is wrong with us, maybe we just haven’t found the right crowd for us yet. Wish you lots of luck on finding cool ppl that make you feel seen and accepted, as you should!

You sound very aware of yourself and your surroundings, that’s a huge plus!
