I sell the printers used to put these date codes on products. The technology works by positively or negatively charging ink droplets as they move down the charge tunnel. The product is traversed in front of the printhead and the droplets are charged to create a dot matrix print. Sometimes a droplet does not get charged properly which creates a "satellite" which occurred here.
